Novation LAUNCHPAD Mini | No POWER & Damaged USB | Let's FIX It!
Here we have a friend's Novation Launchpad Mini MIDI, erm, thing.
It doesn't power on and appears to have an issue with the micro USB port.
Let's see if we can fix it!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

I'm all caught up now started watching your channel two weeks ago, and I have watched everything, I must admit that I was very entertained all the way through, keep up the great work
Thanks Morten, much appreciated! 👍
I’m in the same boat as you - found the channel a couple of days back - can’t stop watching 😃
I third the motion! Love your style and demeanor! Skills are legit as well! The announcer guy is cool too!
Same
Likewise. KZheads algorithm occasionally throws up a real gem.
This video showcases perfectly why it's important to have problems checked out, instead of putting old electronics into the garbagepile. great fix 👍
You sir a huge inspiration for me to get into soldering and trying to fix faulty electronics. I have been watching all your videos from the time you started. You did some silly things back then and have gone to almost being a pro at it today. Thank you for your videos from the states.
Great to see Dave getting stuck in 👍
😁about time he mucked in! 😂
Stuck in resin?
Here's the footage of me using it....... Thanks alot steve, I spat my tea out again with that. Lol Cracking video mate. 👍
So glad I ran into this channel. I've been binge watching your videos for the last 24 hours, the best. Very entertaining.
Just found this channel and love it , I'd never attempt stuff like this but enjoy watching you and learning lol
You’re now the master of usb connector repairs……maybe time to throw into the mix a few printer repairs???? You know how you love ‘em ! I’m trying not to comment on the singing anymore…..but it’s really hard lol
🤣🤣 thanks Guy. Yeah a printer followed by a coffee machine should bring me back down to earth! 😬
Congratulations on hitting 5K Steve, Well deserved
Thanks RB, much appreciated mate 👍
I found your videos recently. Been enjoying listening/watching while I work on art. You’re really funny. I never repaired anything before, but it looks fun and challenging. Keep up the awesome videos!
Nicely done Steve, you can no longer call yourself an amateur
Nice Win! Enjoyed the cameo by Dave and the nod to pearl jam 🙂
Thanks Ob1! 😁
Congrats on the 5k subscribers!
Thanks Chris! 😍
Another interesting fix there Steve but i have never seen one of those Novation Launchpads good job there as always - nice 1 mate 👍
Thanks Chris! I'd never come across one of these before either. Really interesting little thing! 👍
You should definitely look at the work from someone like kaskobi, I've used 3 launchpads for a couple of years now and there really fun
Nice work Dave. Great work Steve!
Dave is the real MVP in this one! 😁
@@StezStixFix without Dave non of this would be possible
Always entertaining Steve, Nice work!
Thanks Josh! 👍
"Alive" from Pearl Jam at the end... Pure poetry ♥
That is literally the best northridgefix parody so far, with the necessary respect. ;-)
nice work steve, you must have heard me shouting solder the connector chasis to the board :p
😁 thanks Darkshijima! 👍
Footage of you using it had me laughing! Great video and another nice fix
😁 thanks Luke!
I attempted this exact fix and absolutely butchered it! Gotta start somewhere 😊
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth🙄
Sick beat at the end steve, I dig those pluck sounds. Planning to release the full version later?
Another Nice video. I'm no expert, but wouldn't it have been a good idea to anchor the USB socket before repairing the connections?
i love your videos haha I watch them all. thank you
🤣🤣 sometime l wonder if you are all there 🤣mr Steve as always great video keep them coming mr 👍🙏😊
I know that, I have 2 of them, pro and mk2 but I have to replace the USB port in the pro so I guess this video can kinda help me with the process :) . Btw to get to orange sylacone pad off the back , use a hair dryer set it to warm and put it on the flap while pulling gently.
i have the same issue with my launchpad mini first edition, but do you know if this method works even when it is not recognized by the computer? the lights go on, but its not recognized :(
I like your new mic. It sounds much better
😁😁
Please more footage of you using it 😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I really like the relatively easy ones.
Thanks WanJockey. Yeah, super satisfying this one. Really enjoyed it! 👍
Brilliant 😉👍
Never seen one of those before pretty cool. Solid solid solid are you taking the mick out of Alex lmao
😬 me? Never! 🤣
Mate!!! That spudger tool you're using around 2:05 - where'd you get it?
Nice action clip of you using it, lol :-D
Hi, I was looking to fix a similar problem on my Launchpad Pro MK2, what type of liquids are being put on the board before you solder. What am I seeing in this video when I look at those two very thin wires used to bridge the gap?
Nice I found this
True story: I had a launchpad mini that would do the fireworks display and not work otherwise. I ended up selling it as a 'for parts' item, but they can be finicky even while powering up. Also, great video and Eddie Vedder impressions :)
I ve got the same issue. Its go power through usb, so its flashing with fireworks, but it is invisible as mid device. once i push usb socket into board it is visible. so now I need to follow the video ;)
LOL! love the spoof
Looks like a weird tenori-on. Anyway, this channel is damn good.
Can you share the name of green liquid you use to cover the traces ?
I don't know why I enjoyed that so much but I did. What is that insulating goop you put on in the end?
Looks like solder mask
I see you bought yourself a quality mic!!🤣🤣
😁 yep, thought it time I upgraded a bit 😂
@@StezStixFix I really like the humour in your videos! 👍
So... First things first: nice impression at the beginning, you just needed a Big Boss to make it better than factory. 😁 About the fix: great work on that port. You are like a wise and old jewllry maker practicing.patiently your art. And finnaly you really have a good voice for singing and good musicall taste. Oh! And I've enjoyed Dave's participation! I'm glad he could help! 😁🤣😃
😁😁 thanks Pedro! It's about time Dave contributed something useful! 😂
Hey everybody, do you prefer VOS or LPF? I've got a soft spot for LPF, but something about the smooth, lowness of VOS is just nice.
🤣 Smooth!
Hey steve which tip are you using, the bent tip for your Hakko?
Hey BeoGeek. It's an aftermarket one I got from Ali-Express. It was in a set of about half a dozen, and it's really useful for getting in tight spots!
@@StezStixFix was about to say I don't recognize it, mind sharing the link?

pearl jam alive GOOD song! and you need to get start do some DJ stuff
Hey! brother Steve! I believe in you! hand on heart. That Pad has gave me an idea! maybe make a home-made stream deck! from an unfixable one, for fun! 🤔🤘👍🏻 Oh an idea too! how about a small strip of enamel wire Or de-solder wick over the top of the port, from ground to ground maybe? less chance of it lifting ripping pads.
😁 thanks brother Steve. Great idea, I would never have thought of running something over the top to anchor it down! I might give that a go! Also, great idea about the streamdeck. I wouldn't know where to start, but it sounds like it would be an awesome project! 👍
@@StezStixFix Hi mate, do you fancy having a crack at trying to repair a ps2 with red green light flashing issue?
I've got a Launchpad Pro mk3 and the USB port on that is wonky, happened within a week of getting it. It works perfectly fine, but it seems like the USB port is the weak link when it comes to Launchpads
Gracias
Hilarious ending thx
Great video. Please link with your pink mic :)
🤣 thanks Froz!
I have a Novation K Station that powers on but doesn't make any sound could you fix it?
another big hit
Great job. However, to test whether it is repaired - you need to plug it in and see if it's recognised as a USB MIDI device. It does receive power, lights flicker, hooray, but is the data connection functional as well? It's how I fumbled up AKAI MPK MINI once, put it together before checking if the data connection is alive, then realised it wasn't, so it took another re-assembly and more soldering.
Anyone know what component U5 is? It has AD 20A as the label and its 5 pin. Just down from the usb. Mine appears to be shorted but can’t work out if it’s a regulator or something more exotic? Long shot I know 🤟👍
If you are looking for future material, would you consider doing a solder/circuitry 101 video for all us plebs who are piecing together the basics from watching your content? Love the format, you will be at 200k in no time!
Had to fix the same thing on my son's launchpad. I hate micro usb port! I might break it open again and swap the micro usb port with a usb c port.
Nice
You're welcome Steve, any time. It's not like I'm going anywhere. :|
I love SponsorBlock so much
I Ripped out the USB port, Can i solder the usb cord to where the port was attatched? theres Black, Red, Green, White and Ground wires. IDK where they need to be attatched to, though.
Yeah, you can do that. Black is ground, red is power and white and green are the data lines. If you have a multimeter, you can check which is which on the board. If I remember rightly, they will go black, green, white, red from top to bottom. Good luck 👍
I just have the problem that I connect the launchpad but only shine and I can't play any song and i can't use it in Ableton. And it's so hard find videos like this in Spanish. If you can help me, I would thank you
😆 🤣 😂 😹 so enjoy your videos 📹 😀 please keep them coming 🙏 😉 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 have a great day mate 😀 😊 👍
Thanks Roger! 👍
I have a same unit that was in guarante servise for 4 times and they never fixed it properly( usb issue too). Would love to send it to you.
NOICE
Hi funny fella! I too try and mend stuff…you might want to invest in a grinding pen for tracks and traces…I bought one from Alibongoexpress for about a tenner…brilliant bit of kit. Keep up the rubbish work..lol
You should have put some more solder on the other side of the legs for extra strength.
Tip: Put a usb male (with some contact spray on it) into the socket when soldering the sides of the connector. It is of no use with your result however when you accidentally use to much solder it can easily drip into the holes of the connector and that can ruin your day.
Nice! A Chris Chan straw.
steve youre f*cking amazing dont stop
nice
Captain Bodge never cares when he runs wires run over vias or other solder pads on other components. A short is just another reason to fix it again later!
The real issue isn't the power; it's the blinking lights when it connects to USB. I'm experiencing the same problem, with my PC repeatedly stating 'USB not recognized.' Do you have any ideas about what might be causing this and how to fix it?
same issue let me know if you find something
Factory soldering looks suspect there. The main anchor grounds looked weak as...
My old cellphone had the same problem with usb plug
Can someone tell me why those traces didn't have to pass through that component on the right of the USB port? The thing that's some sort of metal in an oval shape.
At 7:10 it is on the bottom left hand corner of the screen. I noticed the actual traces run through that, or maybe they run underneath and thats not relevant. Thanks guys!
What got burn there? 7:27
Micro USB is the worst ever connector
Yep, give me an old-fashioned mini over a micro any day! 👍
I guess the Launchpad pro mk3 would come apart in a similar way?
Yeah, I should imagine it's very similar. 👍
how can i send u my launchpad from toronto 😭 i have the same problem
And to think I send this back to Novation for a replacement...
…👏👏👏
You should have used MIDI OX to verify all the pads were working.
all patrons sound like Band names for some reason
The port is crooked. Nice work though.
I wish I could do it...
Is there a video that tells Dave's story? I'm interested in his ... how he ... what happened to him.
Every single one of these things has a faulty usb port, I think they were constructed from cheese
this pink pipe disturbed me at start ah ah
😂😂
i love the jokes
ROFL nice straw
😂😂
Should have pulled the port, fixed the pads, then reinstalled the port.. you are doing it the hard way. No i take that back, you are doing it the halfassed difficult way!! No need in running those wires. Just pull the port, scrap away the track coating, add a small wire from the track to where the port legs will land, reinstall the port, and cover your work with solder mask DONE the correct way without all the mess!!!
I did it the idiotic me way. Thanks for the tips 👍
@@StezStixFix just the hard and messy way man. I never trust long runs of wire with that small of an attachment point.even with the soldier mask its bound to break loose with a drop.alway use as much of the original trace as you possibly can. Also They do make replacement pad strips .if you had those this job would have been quick and easy, but a small wire a few MM up the trace to where the legs land would have worked. Also another thing you should have done is added more soldier to the top side of the port mounting legs to help reinforce the port from future movement. Heating up the bottom doesnt help with that issue one bit, only adding more mass on the port side will. I like to scrap away a bit of the board mask around the mount legs so that i get more area for soldier to attach to make sure they never move again..
@@solidsnake6405 I did add more solder to the top side of the mount legs, I think it got edited out. ...and yeah, I have ordered some of those pad strips from China, hopefully they'll arrive soon! Don't forget I'm only doing this for fun, and I'm not pretending to be a pro! That said, I really appreciate the tips, because it'll help me for the next time! 👍
@@StezStixFix might as well do it as well as ya possibly can while you are in there. I do enjoy your videos tho, don't think i am hating on ya or trying to be a prick.just want to see channels like yours grow and be all that they can be.. Btw,what hot air station are you using?
No worries, I appreciate it! The hot air station is the Quick 861DW. I upgraded from a crappy Yihua one! 😬
novation very low quality (
#3 comment 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆
Such a wimpy port mechanically.
Those USB ports were not made for human fingers. They need to be bigger and beefier instead of this obsession with making everything smaller.
Micro USB are dogshit. Such a terrible connector for something that's supposed to be plugged in frequently. Planned obsolescence at it's finest. BTW with micro usb socket repairs, I always flow some extra solder on the top sides where it anchors for extra support.
Totally agree! Good tip, thanks! I checked and the solder I added to the underside did flow through, but adding more to the top would definitely make it more solid! Cheers! 👍
Hail Satan.
curious why you limit your supporters? you dont like money? lol
This game sucks!
