Boom Extension Cylinder Tear Down! | Franna Crane Project | Part 12
Could this cylinder get any longer!? We’re making use of all our workshop space for this tear down! In Part 12 of our Franna crane project we are disassembling this vital component, the boom extension cylinder, before diagnosing any issues and then rebuilding it better than before. Watch the transformation as we tear down, inspect, and replace worn parts. A couple of stubborn bearings means we have to get out the oxy torch and do some flame cutting before we complete the cylinder by sandblasting away all the old paint and rust and giving it a fresh coat of paint to make it like new! Stay tuned for the next Franna crane project video or catch up on all the previous videos below 😎👇

They just love getting emails so everyone your ideas for the new Franna paint scheme to the office ASAP.
No paint drip this time. Satisfyin.
"Hang-on you've got black stuff on your nose." Response *tasty*
Honestly, I could not pick any single part of the video out as being better than the rest. I think it is so fascinating and a perfect example of watching an expert ply his trade. 👍

Most KZhead creators are having to trim their content down to 12-15 minutes so they can hold the attention of their viewers. I would wager that this channel is one of the very few where viewers watch every last minute of content. I think that speaks volumes about both the quality of the production from Karen and the quality of the work and content from Curtis. You guys always put together compelling projects and we especially love the outtakes and bloopers!
I wholeheartedly agree
Try andrew camaratas chanell or jesse muller same as this one very entertaining
So true. Genuinely hard to find anything else of comparable depth and quality on YT
I intake the outakes
What about 😢the dog he does a good job to
This one of those one-in-a-thousand channels even among the big channels. Curtis is really good at what he does and Karen's camera work and editing is top-notch. Likeable people and they treat the cute doggo and the wild crows with such kindness. I bet a lot of people never thought they'd one day be religiously watching the refurbishment of a crane boom cylinder.
thanks for the kind words & support!
copy that.
Truth right there.
Couldn't said it better myself.
Yes, you both give so much extra effort to share your projects with us all. Thank you for the must see content, no matter what you are repairing, building, or sharing.
Karen, The quality of your filming and editing is excellent. The pace and storytelling is just superb.
Yay, thank you!
I liked the part showing how you set up camera on the excavator for us to enjoy full picture of sandblasting area, Thank you @@CuttingEdgeEngineering
I came here to say this! Totally agree, fantastic filming attention to detail
Watching Kurtis remove those bearings with an oxy cutter is yet another example of a guy who has obviously played this particular game of silly buggers before and won. The dude is a feckin’ ARTIST. Well played mate, very well played indeed. 🤟🏻
Surgical.
Also, things I’d like to see: Karen wrapping up the bloopers with a cuss count. Something along the lines of “We had 132 f*#cks, 15 c#@ts, 3 b£&st@rds, 2 @r3h0les and a w@nk3r. So, a pretty uneventful afternoon all round.” It’d be a great way to get demonetised so probably not a good idea but it would make me laugh my bollocks off. 😁
Wicked skills with the gas axe.
There is nothing on Netflix, or the 5 other streaming services I pay for, that is more compelling to watch than this crane series. I’m totally hooked!
My favorite series/channel on the internet also!
I’m looking forward to it being done so that I can go back through & binge it.
me too
“Hooked” I see what you did there. 😀
Very well done and that air blaster is fantastic and made that shaft looking fantastic. Are you going to air blast the crane body as well to rid it of rust and old paint? Your videos are very enjoyable, watching you work, and when you run into situation, you work it out!
That o-ring to slide the other o-ring to protect it from the pick was pretty slick!
Yes, I also was very impressed by that little bit of engineering voo-doo.
That crane is getting so much love. But can we just take a moment to appreciate how much of an MVP that forklift is!
When you started pulling that cylinder apart I didn't think it was ever going to end, that was an incredibly long cylinder but you managed to get it apart and reseal it, then sandblast it and put an awesome paint job on it that looked like it had never been painted before. This crane is going to be better than it ever was when it was new. Can't wait for the next step in the rebuild.
I love how your massive sandblasting unit is a portable sandblaster when you have a forklift.
Everything becomes portable if you have a Forklift
@@unserfaa big enough forklift 😂
This look "so easy" for the sandblasting that.... I'm really excited (like a child prior Christmas) to discover the video of the crane chassis sandblasting. For me it is 100% sure now, with this so powerful unit and all the rebuilt already done (ie: this boom cylinder dismount) it will sandblast everything in the crane now to get out of the "coal mine washing plan rust" and have a good paint unit without any rust parcel. 🤩
Forklift certification makes miracles .
How much of the crane chassis would remain after sandblasting?? 🤣
I just love the outtakes. It's so 'normal'. Two people trying to make something and having all the normal problems and exasperating moments we all do because they're... just human. Way too much media is so over produced these days. I love that my kids are like "they make awesome stuff!!" and I'm like "wait for the end". Then they see you both go through the same struggles everyone does. Good for you for showing it. Its a big part of what makes this channel special.
Yes I agree with you, normal people, my plan is to stay as normal as possible as long as I can, at least until I die
This Franna crane series is an edge of the seat experience. Will Kurt be able to put all the bits and pieces, nuts and bolts back together again. Putting the videos up for view on Fridays is such a tonic for a working man--at the end of a working week there's nothing better than a few beers, a pizza and a CEE video. Keep up the good work!
i’m fairly certain that this project will be many times better than factory when it’s completed
That's like us wondering "omg, will the hero survive and succeed?" while watching a movie - except d'uh, *of course* he will... ;)
Well who the F*#@ knows. I’ve been asking when part 13 will be available and how many parts are there to the Franna Crane restoration - I’ve been asking for weeks. I love the show but ffs, please answer my message.
Aside from educating and entertaining us this whole series will serve as an excellent reference manual for anyone working on a similar crane. On a sidenote, it’s nice to see that the audience engagement is driving. The algorithm to have gained Curtis and Karen an additional 3000 subscribers since last week let’s all make sure that we’d like share and comment and keep those numbers rising. content is good as this is hard to come bye
Watching Kurtis’ attention to detail at every step is hypnotic. Every bit of that crane, down to the air in the tires will be better than new when he’s finished the project!
Still get the pingfuckit clip though.
One of my favorite things about these videos is just the fact that Curtis knows what he's doing, every step of the way. It's a pleasure to watch someone so competent in what they do. I'm mechanically inclined, but the stuff he does makes me anxious haha. I'm glad it's him doing it and not me.
The outtakes are what tell the true tale of how many attempts to seat a seal it takes. All mechanics know the truths behind your vids and that is how we can appreciate the incredible talent you have. Keep it going!
Oh man it was so nice to see the seal blooper, Lol. As a hydraulics mechanic myself it's nice to know that Kurtis is a mere mortal just like the rest of us.
That bearing removal without destroying the zylinder shows your skills. Very nice :)
Good evening from Tokyo, Japan. After a day in the shop, it’s nice to sit down and watch you tackle the latest episode of your Franna crane overhaul. It’s such a pleasure to watch your careful and methodical workmanship. I’m enjoying a hot cup of green tea and some rice crackers. Please take care.... cheers.
I’m watching this series and every time at the end I’m like damn why isn’t there more that 50 minutes wasn’t long enough. Love the chemistry between you two. Every step is detail oriented but at the same time not boring at all. You two definitely reserve the praise you are receiving. It is a blast to watch every second of the videos. Once the series is finished the crane will probably be in as good of a condition as when it rolled off the factory floor if not better.
This video is a great showcase for tools that Kurtis has made for himself. The Rollers. The V blocks in the first few minutes alone.
As a restorer myself I am enjoying every second of the Franna Crane project! Love Kurtis's skills and love Karen's commentary 😄
I'd definitely rewatch this series once this machine is completed
Once completed Karen is planning on doing a mega compilation timelapse video of the entire build 😲
@@CuttingEdgeEngineeringFranna Crane - The movie! This is awesome.
I am so going to do this. Send the wife and kids over to her sisters and have me a Franna binge night!
@@rildain76 - might have to be a Franna binge long weekend! 🙂
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Well, I think that is a nice idee.. Never mis a episode from your channel, sometimes a day after, but most of the time friday morning here in the Netherlands, where we have a little snow at the moment.. Greetings from Jinny, Madame électricienne.
I just rewatched the roller support video, so fun watching you used them here. Really like the mix of tech used, from high end sand blaster to a plastic bag to keep a puking cylinder in check. And the bit where Karen was risking her life climbing equipment finding a good spot to film the sandblasting just shows the dedication! ;) Thanks both!
My absolute favourite channel on any platform. You could put out a 10 hour episode and I would watch it. Just brilliant. Thank you.
I don't know what it is about Curtis's videos, but I watch them in full every time I come across them in my feed. I have nothing to do with welding or heavy machinery, but I love watching him do his job. I just slap the video on one of my screens and poke away at my sysadmin stuff. Thanks a lot for the hours of entertainment, Curtis!
My favorite part of CEE videos is watching Kurtis solve problems with the simplest solution possible. He possesses a cleverness that never fails to teach me, in some manner that the simplest solution is usually the best one. I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the Franna crane series, and I thank you both for the amazing videos. Keep up the great work!
As a mechanic I appreciate the attention to details. That is the difference between quality work and a hack job.
Was actually both surprised and impressed at the very modest expense for new seals. They can be absolutely ridiculous in price, but even at twice that price, it would be cheap peace of mind considering how much work is involved getting the damn thing out! Love your work CEE....
This has got to be one of the nicest cylinders I've ever seen you service. Credit to Franna: This machine has had an incredibly rough life, and it has held up very well.
Finally something on this crane that wasn’t completely worn out or trashed
The overhead crane would have to be the most under-rated piece of equipment in your workshop. It has featured in nearly all of your videos, and I wonder how you would have coped without it. Love all of your content, always a pleasure to watch a true professional
Sky hooks are readily available - suspended from flying pigs and unicorns - old git, UK
Like a shot it the arm .... Another disciplined, methodical and systematic breakdown. Kurtis definitely has a stringent work ethic. I'm hooked.
Agree!!!
I third the motion😅
The discipline is gone, we all heard kurtis say a bad word😂
@@frank03s Haha yup! He was a naughty boy.
i’m absolutely impressed with Kurtis’ work ethic and his dedication to any project he’s working on
Really enjoying this project. Reality is that the crane will be 'Better than New'. Thank You Karen for the longer video, two hours would be OK for myself and 99.999% of your viewer's.
After the TLC he gave it, that will be the best running Franna outside of a showroom.
Hello, my name is Vokhid Temirov. I follow you from Uzbekistan. Every video you upload will be useful for me.
This is turning into one of the most complex and interesting projects I have seen on this or other channels. We get cylinders, booms, engines, hydraulics, chassis, drive train, and eventually sheet metal I suspect.. Pretty much something for everyone. Salvage channels spend time bringing back old iron to functionality and usually stop there. Sometimes they will do some painting. Very few would devote the time, energy, and resources to doing what amounts to a ground up restoration for a tool of this magnitude. THANKS!!!
Nothing like watching Kurtis play with his gland on a Friday morning. Have a great weekend guys.
Agreed. Also good to see the DIY protection job so he doesn't get wet when the rod spurts lubricant everywhere
@@heffatheanimal2200 His momma didn’t raise no fool.
cheeky bit of humor here 😂😂😂😂
What an amazing spectrum of talents Curtis has. I never thought I would spend a significant amount of time ...on a Saturday night! ... watching the refurb of a long hydraulic cylinder. The video skills ... and editing skills, that Karen possesses really adds to the 'watchability' of their videos. Well done to all the crew and cast (inc. dog and birds) of CEE ... keep 'em coming.
I always enjoy the mechanical content. In this video, the double screen shot of the hammer blows at one end while also showing the part separating at the other end was great.
Most people won’t even go that far with it, but you Curtis are not most people. Truly a Master Craftsman!❤
As mesmerized as I always am at the great teamwork of you two...I was spellbound and in awe watching the scenes of the surgical torch work. Most of us watching have used a cutting torch at one time or another, but what you accomplished so easily and surgically is a skill that surpasses 99.9% of everyone out here. Karen's filming and editing creative skills are just as surgical and precise and spot on. GREAT GREAT team. 😍 CEE ROCKS !!! Don
I hope you see this, I have never used a cutting torch but the master makes it look easy and that comes from extensive knowledge and experience and I might add he loves his work, that's plain to see. I operate a telescopic forklift in the construction industry and have been doing so for nearly 20 years, until I found CEE I never knew I had any attraction to engineering but now I do, the content Karen Kurtis and Homey put out is second to none, I'm hooked.
Hey Don! Glad you enjoyed seeing the torch work. It takes some practice to get that precise, but it's all thanks to years of messing up before getting it right! And you're absolutely right about Karen - her editing is seriously next-level. We're still learning and growing, but your support keeps us pushing forward. Thanks for being with us on this journey!
@@martinmeasures829 I'm used to use a cutting torch in my younger years, and I can tell you, it needs practice. The first times you messed it up like a volcano. I like the way Kurtis do it, it is the way I should do it if I must do it...
I used to cut bearings off with a 3 inch death wheel. Cut them straight across the race, then pop them off. The reason is because you don't have to buy a bunch of bearing race drivers when you can make your own. Weld a cross piece onto the race, then afix a piece of round stock perpendicular to the cross piece and boom, you have a bearing driver. The gap from the cut ensures that the race doesn't get stuck while driving the new bearing into place. If I didn't need that size race, then yeah, a gas ax is the thing. You get good after a while. Okay, most people get good at it.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering A person shouldn’t stop learning until they’re dead, then you can quit learning.
I was fascinated with the technique Kurtis came up with to both remove and re-install the ram.
Homeless is the most “well endowed” canine I’ve ever seen. He’s greatly diminished any sense of manhood I might have had and left me feeling totally inadequate. Thank you very much Homey.
Curtis did say "he has massive balls and a cock like a ripper shank!" 😁
Love the Rapid Blast system. Looks like Kurtis gets a workout holding the hose in check. Camera positioning was excellent. Karen should be nominated for a KZheady Award. 😇
Can't start my Friday without some Big Franna Energy
Good on ya Curtis!! As for getting that rod out, “Gentle tenacity, or shear bloody mindedness” will always get you there. Cheers
I was most impressed, with your use of that very precise tool. The Bashometer.🙏👍🇦🇺
Your forklift certainly earns its money. You use it like another machine tool, but mobile. Doesn't it ever get jealous of all the attention you lavish on your cranes? Perhaps it should start getting its own viewer mail. Another stupendous vid - thanks!
There might be a lot of cussing when the camera is stopped but I'm so impressed with how creative kurtis has to be with these technical challenges. A lot of people would resort to big hammers and torches when things are stuck.
definitely - very professional
Ah, he did resort to the torch when things got stuck… 🙄
@@teeanahera8949 Yeah, it is all about knowing when the torch is OK and is the appropriate action vs. just being a 200 pound gorilla who beats the snot out of everything causing damage.
@@CGT80I'm sure Kurtis has taken a short break to step away from something totally frustrating and rethink it. Homely probably enjoys that also.
Good afternoon Kurtis and Karen, my name is Brian. I came across your channel about 7ish months ago. I began watching many of your videos, and watching your personality, demeanor, work ethic, attention to detail has brought back so many wonderful memories from my younger years growing up. My best friend was nicknamed Shades for his almost continuous wearing of aviator mirror sunglasses... I think the only time he took them off was to sleep literally. Shades was going to school to become a machinist, at 16 he was already a machinist apprentice, with an incredibly bright future ahead. He was intense, perfectionist, a work ethic and stamina that was almost unmatched. The two of you are so similar it truly is mind bending, each possesses almost the exact same sense of humor, mannerisms, you both move and stand very similar... to the point the first time I heard laughing, it was like hearing a voice that I haven't heard in nearly 35 years. The only true noticeable difference, you are probably 5-6 inches taller but the build is incredibly similar, and Shades had a voice deeper.than my own bass baritone. Sadly Shades lost his mom to cancer at a very young age, and battled his own deacons for a long time. My best friend, my younger brotjer from anither mother took his life at the age of 17, my son actually carries his name. Thank you for the incredible and amazing work that you do, and most especially thank you for the wonderful memories that you bring back, every Friday. I pray that you and your Karen have a most blessed and wonderful weekend. Mayhem🙏💜
That just sucks about Shades, it just sucks.
So sad to hear. Stay strong my friend, light a candle on his ( would been ) birthday

This crane lucked out being added to your family! It had no idea that you were planning a resto on it like you would a classic car! I also have to think that there are so many other people in the world now that have a completely new respect for how to treat their equipment based on seeing what it takes for you to repair things and how much effort you expend making sure you OWN equipment gets babied. Also wondering... Have you considered building a semi-permanent pallet to mount your blasting rig so it can be moved as a single unit? I think it'd be great to be able to fork onto your flatbed and have the compressor, mixing unit, and some kind of hose reel rigged up so you don't need to connect everything every time. Just plop it down, fill the abrasive tank, spool out the hose, and get to work! Just work out a way that the blasting rig bolts on to the pallet frame. Leave the wheels on but elevated so you can still move the kit independently of the compressor, just in case. I know you're busy but it seems like a worthwhile project. Love you guys!
The best moment - Kurtis taking the red pipe with the look "I'm done asking you rusty bastard!"
Coffee Kurtis & Karen in the morning. Awesome start to a wintery Scottish morn. Take care & stay safe.
WOW! Your water/sand blast assembly worked beyond my imagination! What a time saver!
This hydraulic cylinder took a lot more work to remove than changing the seals, blasting and painting. Congratulations Kurtis! Greetings from Brazil.
I love it guys...it doesn't feel like there have been 12 videos of this crane, but here we are. Very entertaining...you guys are great.
Using the side push function on the forklift is really clever!
Just so amazed at how easy you make it all look Kurtis... and then I watch the outtakes. 😆 This crane is going to be bloody beautiful. Well deserved major bit of kit for such hard work and dedication.
I'm less than a novice here, but this boom seems to be quite the piece of engineering. I find this one very interesting as I do most of your work. I appreciate your videos in that the length of each doesn't bother me as some other channels do. One big reason is that in an hour video, you don't feel the need to hear yourself talk for 58 minutes. When you have something to say, it's worth hearing. Thanks!
Only 5 minutes in and I just had to put a comment to compliment you Karen on the videography, not just technically good but the choice of shots, and close ups looking just where my curiosity wants to go. You have obviously learnt a lot while filming Kurtis to capture so much without needing direction. I am sure you can spot things before he does more often now, like trapped cables possibly 😁
Yes Karen is awesome!
I loved the climb up on the excavator for the "aerial " shot
Feels like you’re finally catching a break on this project. I was totally prepared for the cylinder to need a full repair as well. Good for you. Go team Curtis.
When Kurtis is finished it aways looks better than new.
You folks are really good with any jobs you tackle. As well as the outtakes the lady does at the end. She likes it right.
Am I the only one who gets immense satisfaction of seeing rusty parts looking brand new at the end of the videos? There is something I just love about seeing things come back to life!
you’re not the only one who thinks like that

Now I see why this crane was very well built!!! Nice job. 👍 👍👍👍
I just love the lateral thinking you have when it comes to a problem you need to solve: the positioning of the upright bar against the lathe to stop the cylinder from turning for an example, and the hood over the hydraulic port to stop splashing (spurting)... Brilliant.
