Black Panther gets a full breakdown, with all Marvel Easter Eggs, references, and visual details you might have missed. Erik Voss analyzes the film's deeper meaning and the subtle design choices made by director Ryan Coogler and his creative team. What callbacks does Black Panther make to Captain America and Thor, and how does it connect to Avengers Infinity War? How is Killmonger/N'Jadaka (Michael B. Jordan) influenced by figures like Malcom X, but also Heath Ledger's The Joker in The Dark Knight? What is the hidden meaning of the movie's prologue and its final scene?

  • One cool thing is the score. Through most of the movie it's the Africa tribal stuff until killmonger shows up and once he takes power it's American hip hop beats. It stays like that until T'challa returns.

  • Many are saying that they want Killmonger back alive. As much as I want that too, Marvel really can’t. Like with Yondu, his death meant something, sort of a turning point or a change in the way people view the world. So he needs to stay dead or his death won’t have any meaning.

  • T'Challa was never an isolationist, not intentionally, at least; he was a traditionalist. His entire arc in this movie was an exploration of how deeply he believed in the traditions of the past. So, yeah. Even though the country had an isolationist policy, it was more something that had to be maintained as opposed to T'Challa's own philosophy. He was just following in the footsteps of his predecessors, which he thought was right. But he separates himself from them by the end. Yay! :)

    • Interesting idea, but a lot of African soil is actually a reddish colour - I can vouch for that part of Africa anyways - Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda... I think Coogler was just being authentic to the location. As Eric said, he spent some time there researching for the film.

  • I'm sure there will be a sequel to this great movie. What I hope they explore is the burning of the purple herb. Since Kill Monger burned all of it, and only one was saved to heal T'Chala, does that mean he will always be the Black Panther? Can there be other kings and black panther queens after him?
