South Korea's Hangover | 101 East | 한국의 숙취

You might be surprised to know that the biggest alcohol consumers are in South Korea.
South Koreans drink twice as much liquor as Russians and they consume more alcohol than any other nation.
Soju, a fermented-rice spirit, is king, with more than seven million bottles consumed every night.
Drinking is treated as the social lubricant to build workplace camaraderie, secure business deals and to earn trust.
But with an estimated 1.6 million alcoholics, and the social costs to health reaching $20bn a year, 101 East asks whether the cap can be put back on the Soju bottle.

However, you must know that the taste and enjoyment of alcohol does not mature in humans until the mid-thirties of age. College kids drink because it makes them high. But many do not enjoy it, and they get out of fun life the wrong time. At the age you drank alcohol, you were mature only for soda and sweets. Two pints of ale with a mature friend on any afternoon is an ingredient of life that is nearly angelic. No kidding.

I've never quite understood American drinking parties, where people stand around and don't really talk to an individual for more than 5 minutes. • 22:53 -> "She studies 18 hours per day to mantain her grades in university" "During my first year of university we had a lot of problems with finances, so I said, let's forget about study, and get drunk and black out". Two questions for you: where do you find the time and where do you find the money. If you really study 18 hours per day, you don't have time and physical power to leave the house. If you don't have money, you don't have money also for alcohol. I think there are only excuses to drink every night. I know this very well, I know people like these in university and also on work.

    @Sakurainblue@Sakurainblue8 жыл бұрын
    • The same thought occurred to me. If you're struggling financially and with your grades, taking up heavy drinking is obviously going to be counterproductive... but as you know, an alcoholic will always find an excuse.

Drinking culture represents a net loss to Korean society and causes a ridiculous amount of measurable harm to vulnerable people. • emmers ! 100 years ago, mining companies in the US used child labour as young as 5 and not many saw a problem with it because the economic need to expand production was seen to justify the means. Not less than 200 years ago, you had abolitionists and slave owners arguing over the morality of slaves and exploitation of women was the norm and still is in many parts of the world. The reason? People of the time saw it appropriate to do these acts that we in hindsight will consider barbaric. Plain and simple. They were not bad people by their standards, they were living in a society which saw those practices as acceptable and hence morally justified. By contrast, any acts beyond the norm were considered amoral, crass, reprehensible. (For instance, Before the suffrage movement, women who sought more independence from their spouses were often looked down upon). This is their culture, a sign of the times, zeitgeist, an other synonyms you can think of. Morality is intrinsically tied to our culture and upbringing. There are few (if not none at all) absolute moralities, many of the things you and I proclaim as right and wrong by virtue of our lives and our upbringing in Western democracies (I presume) may be completely different from another person whose culture has been slow to shift, or shifted in a different manner. To tie it back to your rebuttal, there’s nothing that “clearly wrong” about girls being essentially child brides sold off to rich families if you bring it away from the 21st century, Western values context. Societies did it before and accepted it, some are still doing it today, and people still accept it. Nothing is wrong and nothing is right. The end.

  • "We respect human rights in Korea" -> More like the police doesn't have much power there. South Korea has a long history of police brutality during a period of military dictatorship from the 60s to the 80s, so when democracy was restored the power of the police was greatly reduced. Most police officers don't carry around guns or any weapons. Even the riot police are not allowed to use anything that can harm civilians, like tear gas or batons, so they are usually equipped only with body armor and plastic shields. Even the slightest police brutality would be all over the news instantly, which is the reason police officers refrain from confronting drunk people.

  • The problem in Korea is very clear to me. Alcohol is cheap, and is literally the only way to escape reality for Koreans. Having a gram of marijuana is punishable with prison time, and even showing positive for marijuana on a drug test can land you in prison. If they make alcohol illegal, people will find another, even more dangerous way to get high. Prohibition never works, because the common man wants to escape from the stress of adult life at times, and there is nothing wrong with that. One should be in control of what goes into their body, not their government. I applaud those who remain sober in their lives, but those who choose to indulge should not be discriminated against for their choices. There must be a reform in Korea to give more choices to their people when it comes to personal leisure. Unfortunately, I doubt that this will happen in my lifetime.

    • So what do you want to do ? Ban alcohol? People die from eating too much sugar too, What now? Should we ban sugar? Too much of anything is bad for anybody. My grandpa lived to become 92 and he drank a beer every now and then,nothing wrong with that. And by the way,life expectancy in South Korea is among the highest in the world.

      @goodmood3@goodmood37 жыл бұрын
    • What your saying is not true. My grandfather had a great life and was very happy. Who do you think you are to say that he wasnt happy? Do you know him? Drinking a glass of beer by a bbq doesn't make you drunk. He didn't drink 6 glasses everyday ,he drank a beer every now and than like alot of people do in most countries in the world. I drink a beer by special occasions and I'm perfectly fine,most people drink like this and most don't drink 10 beers a day,those are the alcoholics and that has many reasons. People in problems be it from work stress(very common in Korea) or other things,like sexual abuse or other terrible things,they try to escape it by drinking too much alcohol but most people do other things like eat too much ,especially women do this,they eat their stress away(mostly sugar) causing obesity and diabetes. And sugar is one of the biggest killers in the world and it's addictive too but because the koran doesn't ban it you don't talk about it. Most people who drink beer or wine are not alcoholics and this video just shows the extremes like most news does otherwise no one will watch. South Korea should be tackling the work stress because thats whats causing the stress and alcoholism in the first place. But you don't know how people live in the other parts of the world,you think everyone is drunk all day,complete nonsense. Who are you to tell me when I'm happy or what I should drink? Yes alcohol can be bad when people abuse it but thats with alot of things,not just alcohol.

They themselves make their country unsafe on some random principle (constitution has been amended before, it's not a big deal). Also, American cops get aggressive for no reason. You can be a tourist taking a picture of them (which is legal) and they get in your face telling you to stop. In any other civilized country this doesn't happen.
