Cetaceans, the Giants of the Open Ocean
The wonderful world of whales and dolphins. Below the waves lies a world of giants. Out in the open ocean, whales and dolphins are well-suited for to a life of wandering, traversing thousands of miles each year in search of krill blooms or breeding grounds. Together, these colossal mammals belong to the infraorder cetaceans. A name with roots in Greek, from ketos, meaning ‘a large sea creature’. But despite their size, cetaceans are elusive creatures, spending most of their lives underwater and in remote areas far out to sea. Let’s shine a light on the wonderful world of these marine mammals.

I read this as "Crustaceans : The Giants of the Open Ocean" and was absolutely terrified at the idea of a massive crab
You should definitely avoid googling the Japanese Spider Crab, for the sake of keeping your underwear dry!!
@@NaturalWorldFacts Omg WHY DID I GOOGLE IT
GIANT ENEMY CRAB
@@NaturalWorldFacts Not big enough, I propose that we genetically engineer a crab so that it's as large as a whale. It would be a very fun school project
@Fozz That would be insane 😂😂 I’m in.
“This behavior is not instinctual” So some whale YEARS ago thought; I have an idea.... and that is just so fucking cool to me.
Yup!! Incredible creatures
Wait, does this mean the whale that rammed the legendary whaling ship Essex also thinking when it rammed? Incredible creatures.
@@KoeSeer I wonder if a pod of orcas has ever declared humans dangerous and attack on sight...
@@lemmingscanfly5 Not yet.
@@hunterG60k right. only deaths on record were caused by captive orcas.
I had gone on a whale watching trip years ago, we saw a pod of 12 blue whales including babies. It was astonishing and everyone including the crew were amazed since they never seen more than 1 or 2 at a time. They had been in business for more than 30 years and it became a record. I will never forget how beautifully large they were, blowing water so high and gliding by our boat.
That’s amazing!! My life would be complete if that happened to me I’ve always wanted to see a blue whale
Just so you know those aren’t pods! That would only be orca which stay as a family in a pod their lifetime! Only time you see big whales together it’s because a lot of food in that area! We get humpbacks here in Alaska, leave each other when they head back to winter grounds in Maui and Baja, then somehow find each other in the same parts of Alaska to feed! Get it?😳😉
Blue whales in pods? That doesn't sound right
A group of whales are called pod? Lmao ty for the info
Where’d you go?
I have thalassaphobia, or the fear of open water. While these videos still give me the willies seeing all those creatures in such a vast space, I enjoy your informative and high quality videos!
Aw thanks!! Glad you decided to face your fear and click on this in the first place, very brave 😊
Same here! It might seem weird but if I’m in a really open and big room, sometimes my brain likes torment me by imagining I’m underwater in a vast open ocean. Gives me the heebie-jeebies 😮💨😪
That's not really a phobia. It's entirely reasonable to be scared of being stuck in the open ocean. Imagine how fish feel when they end up on the beach.
@@deusexaethera Nah it's not like that. Yea it's scary for anyone in reality, but having anxiety spikes at home from the sight of open ocean is an irrational fear. Like, they cannot see the open space without imagining something irrational happening. Irrational fear is usually meant as unreasonably fearful, instead of meaning a thing that is unreasonable to be fearful of
Lol you scared of stupid fish
This is a quality documentary. Short but long enough to keep the watcher interested, Well narrated, very pleasant voice from a talented commentator.
Thank you so much, your feedback and support helps so much :)
I agree!
It is not the google stiff ass voice documentary that i hate.. i actually quite enjoyed this one
This is what I watch when falling asleep, his voice is so relaxing & I also really enjoy his content.
You're just too lazy a neanderthal to even learn.
It's crazy to think that some Humpback in history invented bubble net feeding, or at least pioneered it.
I had one semester of ethology in University, and we were told that it happened over the span of 20th century. Scientists found one unique whale, who did the thing. In a year almost all whales in that aquatory did it. Fascinating.
I wonder the same thing about so many animals and insects, there is a spider for example that swings its webbing like a lasso to catch its prey, like how did it know to do that? Was it engineered into the spider through evolution?
@@joshchapman4753 My guess is that the dolphin observed this happening accidentally and recreated it.
Who knows how ancient aquatic fauna hunted. Maybe a cetacean or ichthyosaur in the past also hunted in this method
Is that whatI’m seeing at 0:59 ? I see water, under water.....
I don't know what it is about whales, orcas and dolphins that I adore so much but just watching footage of them makes me feel like crying. They're such amazing creatures and I can hardly wrap my head around the fact that we exist in the same world as them. They're so fascinating and intelligent they almost don't seem real. It's a dream of mine to one day be able to swim or sail alongside some.
Whales have always fascinated me bcuz of how big they are & there's so many of em! It's crazy stuff my friend lol
Feel you so much.
To anyone who's suffering depression, anxiety, insomnia and other mental health problems, you are not alone. I feel you. You are so brave. You are doing so well. I'm proud of you. I'm sending you a virtual hug
Cetaceans are such a diverse and interesting group of mammals. Not only do they reside in the sea, seemingly everywhere life is found, but they’ve specialized into niche roles like deep sea divers, massive filter feeders, or even intelligent hunters. Another thing astonishing about this group is their intelligence, they can learn, adapt, remember, teach, and plan. They’re not just robotic machines, but dynamic and cognitively active creatures that makes me respect the ocean even more than I already do.
And of course I must mention you! The creator who puts immense amounts of effort, creativity, love and care into each of these regularly uploaded videos, despite your pursuits for education outside of this channel. Seriously Leo, you are one of my favorite people on this platform.
Aw thank you so much, you always make me smile with your comments! I adore cetaceans, and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! It’s incredible how many different roles they play in the oceans - just the sheer influence of creatures so huge is enough to feed entire ecosystems, support entire food webs, and act as direct vectors between locations on opposite sides of the planet!
I needed this. There’s only a few channels that are perfect for that hour or two before bed that helps me drift away. I’ve burned up hours of content so I’m always trying to find that next awesome channel with replay ability. They don't kill them for fun. They kill them when they can't pay their sea-debts to the sea-Don

Whales are SO COOL I'm so glad you've made a video about them with your usual incredible quality! Sperm whales are my favorite animal ever, because I mean, a giant predator that dives into the dark to hunt the mysterious giant squid? Cool as hell! Some more facts because I love them. Their clicks are supposedly loud enough they could literally kill a human swimming nearby from the vibration alone! Sperm whales were the most sought after during whaling times, but they dive so deep and so long their population was less impacted than most other whale species. One of their ancestors was the Levyatan Melvillei, a similarly sized but more terrifying creature, with giant teeth on the upper and lower jaws, that competed with the equally sized megalodon for prey
I sense you’re really passionate about these creatures... and I love it!! Never ever lose that, they are fascinating and beautiful and yet tragically misunderstood! I feel so honoured that such an avid whale lover found my vid and enjoyed it - that’s a win 😂
