I never knew of the I400 subs before my first introduction to Aircraft Carrier Subs. My first knowledge of the concept came courtesy of the game Supreme Commander 2 and the Atlantis Aircraft Carrier Submarine. Although, the Atlantis was much, much bigger, like all things in the game. Pretty sure it actually dwarfs some cities in size or at least a large town.

@@ConeOfArc Uh, the real reason for using the Atom Bomb on Imperial Japan was that OSS knew that at least one of the I-400 was on a mission, which would have involved dropping flea carrying bombs on San Diego, San Fransisco & if possible Portland. Bubonic Plague was a "new use" for the I-400s at the end of the war. This attack would have occurred less than a month after the bombing of Nagasaki, due to the limited speed of the I-400... So now you know why the US Navy sank the subs so quickly, as they found live deceased rats in cages and the flea bombs, which had coils of metal containing fleas around a weak explosive, as Unit 731 found that at least half the fleas would survive the explosive freeing them from pieces of the coils. The Scientists & Physicians of Unit 731 were repatriated after extensive questioning. They should have been repatriated without their heads, as what they did in Occupied China was so vile it even freaked out members of the Third Reich...

@@User-iq4rw so you feel like a real winner
Imagine knowing that your only mission, "Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night" would have killed at least a quart of the people on North America's West Coast, if not a quarter of the World Population. Every Nation would be seeking that I-400 Submarine to slowly kill the crew in the most inhumane way possible, probably by letting their Bubonic Plague Carrying Rats loose inside with the crew, and then welding all the hatches shut... Then the Allies would have destroyed Imperial Japan leaving their home islands uninhabitable and let loose all kinds of pathogens including Unit 731's "products". Imagine once the bubonic plague reached the CCCP, as the Soviets would have been the last of the Allied Powers that were infected, giving them time to prepare something very nasty, such as "improving" Unit 731's "products" before using them...

Next video I would maybe recommend doing about the French Submarine Surcouf. It is by far the most unique sub I have seen, that is because this sub had a twin gun turret armed with 203mm (8-inch) guns. The same caliber as that of most French heavy cruisers.
The Royal Navy had a class armed with a single BL 12in/45cal gun
Not to mention the I-400 was actually based on the Surcouf.
@@cedjoe6 VIVE LA FRANCE
I believe the Surcouf was a work around for the Washington naval treaty. Rather than being a submarine, it was envisioned to be a cruiser/sub hybrid and act as a cruiser.
Just as they finished building it, the London Naval Treaty came into effect, banning people from putting huge guns on submarines like that. The Surcouf was grandfathered in as it was already complete, but it was the only one*, making it a truly unique ship. *Technically the British M-class subs also had big guns on them, but only one of those was actually built with the gun, and it never saw combat.

I-400 fanatics : exist Pre-war Japanese Aircraft Carrying Submarine i.e I-15, I-26 : Am I a joke to you?
they don't exist at all, nope, nah, never heard of 'em.
Type Bs AFAIK only carried and used a single recon floatplane, meant to spot targets rather than to attack them. Very much like the cruiser/battleship floatplanes. I-400 meant to use the aircraft in offensive role, like aircraft carrier's dive bombers. This is the distinguishing role, which was also mentioned in the video at 13:03. While type Bs were impressive, they were not near the capabilities or purpose of I-400s.
Ooopps...

How many pre-war Aircraft Carrying Subs existed before the I-400?
A submarine that can carry aircraft? Sounds a lot like SALVATION to me

«One million lives!»
As far as I understand, there's nothing wrong with this "ship", except that it's never been used. This design does not seem to be cursed in any way, especially since the US destroyed them to prevent the soviet to get the idea.
It’s cursed as it took so long to be developed that the time it was going to be sent out, the Japanese lost the war.
Also the idea that a couple of bombs dropped just from 3 or 4 tank daily is not enough to make US surrender or stop the war hell look at britain and german they toss around bombs like a piss and non of them said i surrender.
@@uthopia27 I think it's more about the fact you can strike the ennemy's fleet anywhere, without them being able to spot you beforehand, nor find you afterward.
I can only Imagine how devastating modern Carrier Subs would be. Modern Bomber and Fighter, on an Mobile Airport that disappears in minutes. Together with Rockets, these things would be scary as hell
@@uthopia27 It would have been 18 subs, possibly invisible to sonar, able to carry out random bombing attacks on a country that previously enjoyed being simply out of reach of bombers. Now imagine you have no idea how many carrier subs there are, or where they'll strike next. Maybe it dissuades America from continuing the war, maybe not, but more importantly, it absolutely _will_ divert resources because now you're fighting a war on three fronts, one of which is the previously untouchable home front.
This isn’t cursed this is GREAT
If you want a literal “cursed by design” you should look at “HMS Captain of the Royal Navy” a very early ironclad that was so unstable, she sank in the first storm she encountered. While the rest of the fleet she was with remained totally fine
When you get a chance, you should take a look at the Courageous-class Battlecruiser HMS Furious. From what I know, it was designed specifically to fight in the Baltic, armed with two 18-inch guns and only displacing around 20,000 tonnes.
that's the definition of a glass cannon. It became a nice aircraft carrier on its hull though
Just a quick note: the Courageous class was to be armed with four 18-inch guns in 2 twin mounts. The final ship, the HMS Furious, was redesigned to carry 2 20-inch guns in single mounts. However she would only ever receive one, with the other (the A, or forward most turret) being replaced with a flight deck.
Also, nit pick, but their official designation was 'Large Light Cruiser'.

She did, time to time as scouts
"Hi Phil Swift here with a new aircraft carrier! It even works under water!!!"
They really did try this for real. It wasnt just a thing in ace combat
The next cursed by design naval edition: Flight-deck cruisers. Which are basically Carrier-warship hybrid except they are purpose-designed warships meant to carry planes Edit: You should have added her reason why she is that popular even amongst the Anime Fans as well. She is also the protagonist ship of the anime Arpeggio of Blue Steel.

@@fernandomarques5166 I'm always the fan of AHnA ever since I was exposed to it 6 years ago. Been reading the Manga version since the Anime had ended way too soon

I'll have to look up that manga... Interestingly, the video's sponsor, World of Warships, has a few surface ships based on Arpeggio of Blue Steel. They are, of course, expensive premium versions of ships found in the game. They have the prefix ARP- in front of their names. That's where I originally heard about the anime. Good to know it has a manga, thanks! - Also, WoWS is adding submarines to the game... I really hope this isn't the future Tier 10 Japanese sub. (Is too much chonk.)

The Japanese were very interesting in their carrier hybrids, maybe you could do a video on the IJN Ise next? That was the Japanese battleship carrier hybrid for anyone interested.

Check out the new Project 955 Borei subs the Russian federation is making.... now that is size.
the french tried with surcouf i guess
If anything, WW2 has proved that size isn't everything. The Bismarck, Yamato, Tiger tanks, elefants etc etc.
The fact that the I400 couldn't change the tides of the war is proven by the fact that it...didn't. Contrary to many popular beliefs about WW2, the various Axis giant superweapons really wouldnt have changed much
@@primuspilusfellatus6501 that was already established in World War 1 with the different types of torpedo boats that just wreak havoc on capital ship fleets, devil may care
A complementary video to this would be the French heavy cruiser subs. I know that other nations tried them too, but the main one that reminds me is the French.
How about the British K-class? Steam power!
There is another interesting link between the Typhoon and I-400. The need for stability and space meant that rather being one cylindrical pressure hull surrounded by a hydrodynamic shell like many WWII submarines, the I-400 had two such cylinders, giving it a sort of figure-eight cross section under its superstructure. The Russian SSNBM also adopted a multiple pressure hull design. So far as I know, this was a completely independent development as the US scullted the Japanese subs before the Russians could have one, but it makes me wonder about a world where more subs used this option.
arpeggio of blue steel is how I found out this sub existed. I personally love it.

I saw the float plane being restored at the Smithsonian Restoration Facility in Virginia in August 1993. They let me install a bunch of rivets. About 5 years ago, my family saw the totally restored float plane at the huge Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport in Virginia. Great to see it restored.
Me too, at the Suitland site. We were not allowed to be hands on, though.
Due to the added weigh of the hanger components, the I-400s were very top heavy and had a tendency to roll upside down. To solve this problem, the middle sections of the submarines were made up of two hulls that were welded side by side. This increased the platform's stability and counteract the top heavy nature of the submarines. The submarine's unique hull layout plus the hanger compartment also made the I-400s the first multi-hulled submarines.
Damn that's interesting
Thanks I love this concept

Nice to see you branching out. I am fascinated by the innovation of the IJN.
It's amusing to consider that a desperation tactic on the part of the Japanese in WWII has become a staple of modern combat. When you look at their function, guided missiles and cruise missiles are nothing more than robotic kamikaze, flying to and crashing into their targets before detonating.
