Power chain (Continuous Elastomers) in Orthodontics

Power chains are highly efficient because they add more pressure and force in moving the teeth.
Power chains are connected units of ligatures (elastics). They are normally made from the same material that is used on the ligatures (the elastics holding the arch wire to the individual brackets).
It is most commonly used to help close spaces after a tooth is extracted, or used for generalized spacing with in the mouth.
Types of power chains:
- Closed
- Short / Medium
- Long / Open
These names may vary from company to company.
There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to power chains and the uses, so understanding which suits which situation is critical.
