In this video, we're looking at the early days of his career, along with his animatronic costars and the many forgotten Pizza Time Players. • Someone actually found a complete set of Beagles animatronics, and donated it to an automobile museum in Volo, Illinois. The great thing is that they programmed completely new showtapes for them that build off the original ones, and are actually better. All the Beagles get to talk, and some of the showtapes even have unique dialogue. It's really cool, and I recommend anyone who's reading this to check it out. The museum has uploaded a couple showtapes to thier KZhead channel, so you really have no excuse.

  • I've decided to headcanon that the original Chuck is a different person from the new version. In fact, there's three Chucks- OG, post-company-marge 80s-90s version, and the post-Avenger modern version. The differences are so stark that it makes sense to me. OG was a rat who found this mouse with nothing more to him than his first name digging through the garbage. Charles hung off OG Chuck like nobody's business, and the old ass grew a soft spot for this poor kid. He took Charles under his wing, showed him the ropes, even let him write some scripts for the band, though the tone was way less crass than they were used to. Everyone liked the kid, and Chuck was getting on in his years, so he retired and gave everything to the new Chuck, even his name. Chuck loved his job, but realized that after so many years, he wasn't hip enough for the kids anymore. So, he tries to reinvent himself as Avenger Chuck. That never fully worked out, though. He was just too old to be hip. So, Chuck followed in the path of his old mentor- he found someone new. A much smaller mouse, yeah, but he was hip and cool and bouncing off the walls with energy. He was the perfect replacement. He's taken over now, and 90s Chuck has gone off to join the OG Chuck on some sunny beach far away.

  • Sadly, no, the bots do NOT go to collectors. The only ones we fans get a hold of, are the ones we go dumpster diving for when we know a location is getting their 2.0 remodel. If you make a part 2 covering the 90's era and early 2000's I would love to see it, and hope you tell your viewers what I said here, that way fans know that the animatronics get chopped in half and axed in the face before being tossed in the dumpsters, and it is up to us to save them from going to rot in landfills (provided each person checks to make sure dumpster diving is legal in their state).

  • Thanks for making this! Really showing my age here, but I was a Chuck E. Cheese kid in the mid-80s thru the 90s. While you point out the characters became watered down compared to the early 80s, they were even SADDER by the mid-late 90s when I was entering my teens and grown out of this. I remember going for a young relative's birthday and even by then the show seemed like a relic, a big theater room with these robots performing for no one, no kids really caring about them anymore... And that was in 1997! These poor characters, like forgotten toys.

    • Me too! My dad built, repaired and recorded tapes for animated amusements like this. And I can tell you, this was his life through the early to mid 80’s all day until 3am. His shooting gallery amusements business went bust along with the rest so after that he only maintained the animatronics on call. He has Alzheimer’s now. All his electronics and schematics were burned in a wildfire. The people whose passion and knowledge went into this art form are a dying generation, and it truly saddens me that more people aren’t fascinated with robotics for entertainment and amusements, since it would be so refreshing in this age of having screens everywhere. My 7 year old for one is obsessed with animatronic videos and wishes she could go to the 80’s to see them! She was disappointed when we went to Chuck E Cheese and they had nothing but screens. She said mournfully “I have screens everywhere I go.”

I'm only 20 years old & I really have developed this deep respect & fascination with this era of animatronics & entertainment, & hearing a first hand account of this era is really interesting. I'm not sure if I'll ever see an animatronic band ever preform again in my life time time & that fact just makes me feel so sad in a way I cant describe. i think back when chuck e cheese still did shows I only was able to see one show when I was a kid since every other time I went there they were seemingly off. i don't think I could ever describe just how cool it would be to just see a robot in the middle of a small area of a restaurant crack weirdly adult & off color jokes sing 50s rock songs right in front of me.

  • I think a lot of these animatronics were trying to replicate the Country Bear Jamboree at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. The side comments between numbers and the hick voices of many characters seem very reminiscent of that show. Back in the day, many companies would just straight up try and copy ideas they saw at Disney, but bringing the concept to a more local and regional audience, many of whom had never been, at the time. Though a nearly-forgotten gem at MK (Disneyland's being long replaced), the show was immensely popular when MK opened in 1971, where for years the show consistently had 60-90 minute waits. Before rollercoasters were common, animatronics were all the rage and fascinated people who had never seen robots moving around.

They started to phase out his cigar smoking right as Chucky got a new voice actor. Charles realized he was getting a smoker's voice, maybe even a cough, and decided to quit so his singing would sound better. Probably realizing people and especially kids enjoyed when the performers sang clearly. He's a rough rat but he cares about his business and why he started it. For kids and families

  • Wonderful video Colin! While Avenger era Chuck E was my childhood, hence I still have a soft spot for him, I think that 70s/80s era Chuck E is my personal favorite, because of how snarky he is! Chuck had so much personality back then, and I even love his carnival barker-like outfit too. I also ADORE Crusty, The King, and The Beagles, and I wish they were kept. My mom tells me stories about how amazing CEC was in the 80s, and as much as I love Avenger, I really wish I could've experienced the PTT era. As for Rockstar, I DESPISE everything about the Rockstar/Modern CEC era. The blander looking buildings? Check. Rockstar Chuck's design? Check, plus he looks like a knock off of Mickey. CEC Entertainment sponsoring Autism Speaks, a horrible organization that actually harms instead of helps? QUADRUPLE CHECK! I also personally think destroying the animatronics is disrespectful towards everyone who designed and worked on them. As for Rockstar-era showtapes, I find them bland. I know I am not the target audience for them, but there is a reason The Muppets, Sesame Street, and 2000s/2010s PBS shows are still beloved today. And don't get me started on the Halloween At The Pizza Time Theatre short, a mean-spirited jab at King, Dolly, and Madame Oink. I don't hate EVERY single thing of Rockstar era though, I actually like Bella and Ronnie, but I wish they had more personality. Back to PTT, I personally prefer Folk Singer Helen over Broadway Helen, but that's just my opinion. As someone on the spectrum, I have always gravitated towards vintage mascots, as they have a timeless charm [most of the time] that can't be found with modern commercials. Hey Colin, will you talk about Domino's Pizza mascots [The Noid, Donny & Dottie Domino, Bad Andy], The California Raisins [so much interesting history], and the pre 2000s Burger King characters one day?

  • The "wink" actually used the spider mechanism (that little spider in rockafire explosion), it was going up and down from the roof to the beat, and its mechanism was used for the wink, as the mechanism was fully controlled by the computer and so could be programmed to work only when the show ends

  • It blows my mind how some people never knew that Chuck E Cheese exists until FNAF considering its been around since 1977. I'm a 90s kid, and grew up going to Chuck E Cheese. Even had a birthday party there, but hopefully one day I'll be able to visit the hybrid store here in Cali. It looks so cool

  • The drawing of Munch and Chuck doing the Itchy and Scratchy lemonade bit when you’re talking about the late 80s is so real. I’ve never cared for any of the material after the merger because they just completely watered down the characters. Like what you said at the beginning, the early shows are enjoyable because they’re more “for everyone” but listening to the later stuff just gives me second hand embarrassment. Nice vid

  • I really wish there was a movie or series that took all of these obscure/lost characters, and gave them a 2nd chance at fame. this time in a diner for adults instead of children, Because don't adults deserve a place to hang out? Edit: OK new idea, Wolfman zapp hires all the rejects to work at his grill and bar, or maybe his business fails and then he meets krusty? They could then convince the others to join them and open a new restaurant for adults called attacat diner.

I dunno why, I never really grew up with Chuck E Cheese only going once when I was really little, but learning about the history is so comforting and interesting. I have loved FNaF, ever since it came out, however just learning about these real-life "historical" attractions is just amusing.

  • So, I may as well throw one of my memories about the brand in here, since we're already sorta doing that at the end. But I really remember when I found out about the characters' earlier looks. My half sister, who for the record I was the baby of the family by about ten years, usually took me to a location that had the retrofitted Rock-afire iteration, but at some point she drove me to one that I'd never been to. And I remember vividly that it still had the original Pizza Time Theater signage. There was a mural on the side of the building with the older Chuck with various directional signs, straight out of an old cartoon, down to one pointing at the sky to say how far away the moon was. Then we went in and it felt very different comparatively, not to mention the fact that Chuck and the gang looked far different and much, much bulkier, let alone it being a much smaller stage. That's when, I think, I got interested in the characters. I mean, as a six year old I was already reading massive books about Chuck Jones and the Looney Tunes. It just turned into a need to find out more about these characters.

  • thank you for uploading this one it was so much fun to watch ^u^ I was a cashier and a walk around chuck for 2/3 years just before the pandemic hit. I never grew up with chuck e cheese but I quickly fell in love with the characters and silly stories, at my location we still had a animatronic chuck but he was kind of just that hunk of metal in the corner but I got to watch them do his diagnostics in the morning which is super creepy when no music is playing. On slightly sadder news about possibly preserving the animatronics its pretty unlikely, at least in accordance to my old stores rules from the higher ups. All robotics/games that were decommissioned for the restaurant were ordered to be destroyed to the point of no return even if there was no issues with them I guess this was to make them have no value for people who could find them in the trash? idk it was kind of a crap policy but what can you do. Either way really loved this one!

  • My dad built amusement park shooting galleries and ran a recording studio for sound effects in my childhood home. After he went bankrupt in the 80’s, he started a repair business, often getting calls to fix the animatronics in Southern California Chuck E. Cheese’s. Some restaurants still had the picture frame characters, including the confederate flags and the clapping hooves etc. Unfortunately I only have a couple memories of the animatronics actually performing, since the only times I went to Chuck E Cheese was during my dad’s repair runs. I liked The King and the moving stools in the cabaret the best of what I remember. I was not a fan of Munch. I don’t think anyone was. I wish Crusty was kept around! Learning how the animatronics worked early in life was fascinating. It saddens me that kids can’t have the live show experience anymore, since the very idea of the restaurant was to provide an entertainment experience that was far more special than having dinner in front of a screen. TVs were as ubiquitous in the 80’s as they are now, and additionally kids have screens literally everywhere they go. If there was ever an era to not replace live shows with more screens, this would be it.

  • Tbh, if FNaF didn't exist, I could difenetly see the tv sceen thing working. But thanks to FNaF, I honestly think that could make things worse due to it bringing a different level of animatronic popularity in the public. Like yah, as a little kid they creeped me out, but now, thanks to FNaF, I have a huge respect towards Animatronic characters or animatronics in general. They do really bring a unique charm that tv screens can't quite capture. Like they are trying to evolve with the time yet completely ignoring what younger generations are into, that being horror, especially mascot horror. It suck because there are moments you can tell the company is trying to dip it's toes into the FNaF pool, but are too scared to actually go through it. I dunno, I feel like them completely getting rid of the animatronics would be a bad move due to how popular animatronics, specifically animatronic characters, are right now. Like to an extent where they are arguably more popular with the public/ pop culture than ever before.

I'm never a huge fan of when brands get sanitized, even if it's understandable. It would be really cool if you made a video covering the post concept unification and pre 2.0 chuck e cheese if you ever feel like it. But it's super nice getting a look back at the old less appreciated eras
