The dirtiest player in the league, a generational talent, and a three-team beef

The Boston Bruins hated the Hartford Whalers, and then the Bruins hated the Pittsburgh Penguins. Once Cam Neely came to Boston, he embraced both, finding a foe in Ulf Samuelsson. The two went at it for years, with a playoff collision leading to Neely hanging up his skates earlier than anyone would want.

  • Neely himself has stated that "the hit" wasn't the one that caused his injury that later calcified. It was another hit in that same game in which Neely was laying the check, and Samuelsson avoided it. He bruised his thigh muscle on that one. But I guess it's more fun to say it was that other open ice hit.

    • Or Hamilton and (now former) Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. And let's not forget the blood-fueled beef between James Hunt and Nikki Lauda in 1976, a beef so intense that it involved disqualifications, wrecks, fire, rain and people thinking Lauda had died, and a Ron Howard movie staring Thor

      @patrickracer43@patrickracer435 жыл бұрын
    • Rosberg and Hamilton would be super interesting because that's a beef that has so many layers. Nico and Lewis were childhood best friends and remained so in F1 until they became teammates, and the pressure of a championship winning car drove a huge rift through the 2 of them so badly that the first thing Lewis did after Nico's retirement was say that Valterri was already a better teammate

      @Dalejr88rox@Dalejr88rox5 жыл бұрын

I remember when Thomas Holmström first got to the NHL, his nickname in Sweden was Demolition Man because of his ability to stand in front of the opponents goal and take hits and be a nuisance. In the NHL they thought Demolition Man meant he could kick some ass, and Rob Blake among others tried to start fights with him. Holmström of course is one of the nicest guys on earth, like many of us here in the frozen north of Sweden 😁

But remember back then a lot of that "pettiness" was connected to players getting seriously, seriously injured and there weren't a lot of suspensions unless you basically clubbed someone with you stick or hit someone after a goal. Most of that pettiness was from players feeling unsafe and wanting to police that internally. I'm not saying it worked as a over arching system but that is how they felt because they didn't feel like anyone else was going to protect them.

  • In my opinion, If Cam Neely does not get hurt against Samuelsson, The Bruins may have been able to win the cup In 1991....But as an honest Bruins fan I am sure of this, With the Bruins "Upper Management" at that time being not Interested In spending any money, I think that Cam Neely would have been on any number of teams through free agency In the 1990's....It Is no coincidence that when Cam Neely was at his best, around 1988 to 1991, the Bruins were Finals runner up twice, and Eastern Conference finals runner up once, When Neely was hurt, The Bruins weren't anywhere close to those lofty heights again....Cam Neely's unfairly shortened NHL career was not only a loss to the Bruins of course, it was a loss to the NHL as a whole....He would have had a 15+ year career like an Ovechkin or Crosby In today's NHL....It Is one of the great what If questions, what If Cam Neely has a full NHL career unencumbered by Injury....Anyway, thank you for this post.

  • I think there’s another perspective to this piece that is sorely lacking. Samuelson was a Swede who never fought in his life growing up. Asking someone who has never fought anyone to suddenly go out and fight is pretty weak. Also, Boston liked to play rough with everyone but they were the first to cry whenever anyone played rough back. This is sour grapes.

    @jamest.cromie5814@jamest.cromie58144 жыл бұрын
    • Boston are babies too but if your gonna constantly take runs at a guy (which I have no problem with) you gotta answer the bell. I was a physical player and if it wasn't for no fighting allowed I would of been willing to answer the bell. It's what you do

      @johnathankorkie4984@johnathankorkie49844 жыл бұрын
    • Johnathan Korkie Yeah, I don’t have any problem with that part of it. I think that’s the least important part of the whole conversation. Neely’s landing a couple punches on Samuelsson’s helmet wasn’t going to make his hip any better. I’m just making the point that Boston beat the hell out of Samuelsson - and most others - for years, using both legal and illegal tactics. Then, Samuelsson goes to a much better team than the Whalers and he is finally freed up to exact some vengeance of his own in a way he hadn’t for years beforehand. Remember, as a Whaler, he was on the receiving end of almost ALL of the punishment. I just don’t have a lot of sympathy for teams like Boston or Philadelphia, would like to run around as part of their organizational DNA. Then, when they get caught on the wrong end of something, they scream bloody murder. Should Samuelsson have fought him? Yeah, he probably should have. Does it matter at all to the larger arc of the story? No, I don’t think so at all.

    • Sure Ulf was never expected to fight before the NFL. Still he knew the NFL had fighting and he had to know that if he played dirtier than everyone else in the league while refusing to fight that there would be league wide contempt. Ulf was the dirtiest player during his time and that was not just against Boston.
