Zayn Malik - Vocal Analysis

2018 ж. 7 Ақп.
70 054 Рет қаралды

This is an objective analysis of Zayn's vocal technique.
I included the registers (and falsetto), vocal control, belts and agility. I did not include his specific vocal range but I talked about it shortly in the specific registers. This is no hate towards Zayn.

    • Great video as usual 😍 I have one question please I'm male singer and I have a big problem 😅 If F4 is like the easiest note ever, I start to strain at F#4 so badly and when I go higher it sounds really heady and breathy and weak. How do u explain that some singers can go really high with improper technique compared to some others ? And who"s better between Liam and Zayn according to you ?

He doesn't have much strain on his voice(we are ignoring 2014 btw). And this is said by MANY vocal coaches, so if you don't believe me, you can take a look at them. However, I am NOT degrading Liam. Bestie's got great techniques as well. Peace!

  • Zayn and Liam were the best in technique and range in 1D (though I like Harry's tone better than Liam's, Liam eats Harry in technique). Zayn is my favourite though, because he's creative and likes to change things up a bit live. He's freer, while Liam is more structured (which is not a bad thing).

  • I agree with all of this, even though he’s my fav. His runs are inconsistent and sometimes I dunno where he’s going with them. Lol I Liked his Voice performance of Like I Would over his iHeart Radio performance. Even though everyone always shows that clip of him at the end. When I liked his belting of ‘he don’t know your body’ way more on the Voice. Still there are people who don’t realize how crucial his voice was to a lot of the chorus’ in 1D. Take the crowd away from cheering you can really hear the difference. I always felt like he was the median between keeping Louis/Harry on key. Harmony wise.

However, this just goes to prove that all singers, no matter how good need vocal coaching from time to time. I believe Christina Aguilera once said that about her voice as well. Anyways, people think longevity in the music industry is about a unique voice, but personally, since the definition of a unique voice is subjective, I think it’s more about preference 🤔

  • You uploaded this while I was in gym class 😂 Oh well I finally got to watch it because I'm home now :) Is this what you meant by my voice making a wobble in my recent cover: " A wobble can be the result of inconsistent or inadequate breath management or 'support' (e.g., too little breath energy), a lack of focus in the tone (distorted acoustics with improper or imbalanced tone), a lack of proper (firm) adduction (closure) of the vocal folds, singing with too much "thick vocal cord mass", dragging too much chest voice or "heavy mechanism" too high - thus the entire voice suffers from overblown or over-weighted production - or a shaking diaphragm. Singers who use an extremely lowered laryngeal position will eventually sing with a slow, wide vibrato - the stereotypical operatic sound. Over-weighted voice production (trying to sing too 'big' or carrying the heavier, 'lower mechanism' too high in the voice) can slow down both the temporal (per-second) and pitch excursion rates of the vibrato cycle, and the accumulating air pressure can make the voice sound tremulous. This also causes intonation problems, with the pitch going flat and a lack of upper overtones". (I got this from a website because the link wouldn't work) But I didn't know I was doing this. This definition just makes me more confused to be honest and really I thought it was my natural vibrato doing that little vibration in my voice since a vibration is normal when singing anyway.

    @sabrinag9610@sabrinag96106 жыл бұрын
    • Hey there! It's sort of what I meant, in the sense of "inconsistent or inadequate breath management or support". You do have a nice, natural vibrato, I've mentioned that before. But when you're out of breath, it results in the so-called "vocal wobble". And your notes tend to go flat whenever that happens, but it's all about practice! Just try to take breaths at the right time (and not too deep ones) and manage to sing with just the right amount of air. It's hard to find that kind of balance, but I'm sure you'll manage xx

    • Thank you so much! I'd say Liam, honestly. That's if we're talking technique-wise, because whereas Zayn has some bad habits (e.g. closing his throat), Liam has a really well-developed technique. Sure, his mix could be more even on some belts, but Zayn's mix is inconsistent and his support in the mixed register could really be higher. Also, Zayn should work on a consistent vibrato, not just in his upper register! So yes, it's obvious to me that Liam is ahead of Zayn technique-wise. Both of them have a great deal of musical understanding which I honestly think is an under appreciated skill. Anyway, I hope you got your answer xx

  • I'm having one of my moments of getting a little ansty, because it seems as if I can't do a falsetto. I've watched a few videos and I knew they wouldn't help to me somehow because they're unprofessionally made. After watching the 1D vocal analysis, you seemed to stressed that one the boys don't use falsetto nor head voice and that they need to use it because of technique or something? I can't remember right now. The thing is that my voice keeps going scratchy. My throat could be dry of course, but if isn't my voice just cuts off. It's really annoying and I want to improve so I don't have something major be missing on my technique. No, I can't really get an actual vocal coach right now. I'd rather do it online but it just doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I don't know what to do. I'll keep trying I promise. It's just that my motivation goes up and down at times. Do you have any advice on how to do a falsetto? It would help me a lot. Also while I was talking to an online friend I know (who is a light lyric soprano), she told me that doing a falsetto should be easy for me being a light lyric because I should be able produce an airy quality to it. Uh, well I don't want my voice type to define what I should do when I feel I really can't. It's also different if I sing along with somebody who does falsetto in a song (listening to the song and testing myself), but alone....harder than I thought, which I expected, but at the same time, they make it look so easy! I know typical answer but really, just looking at singers do falsetto make it seem effortless. I'm probably pouting here but I'm not going to skip over falsetto because I can't do it. I'm frustrated because I can't seem to know HOW to do it. One of the reasons why I should work on my head voice because I'm *slowly* progressing on that and I like it so far. Either way I didn't expect to drag a comment out this long. Hope you have a great day xx

    @sabrinag9610@sabrinag96106 жыл бұрын
    • Don't worry at all, you know I'll try to help. The reason I was worried about Louis was because he kept trying to pull his chest voice up instead of mixing or eventually falsetto. I know it can be frustrating, it will always be. You'll have days where you're annoyed and just stop practicing. That's okay, no one is motivated all the time! I'll try my best to help you find your falsetto voice. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "scratchy", but maybe you're talking about the break from chest/mixed to falsetto? That is completely normal. Your vocal cords need to be absolutely relaxed, no sort of tension should be present. Just don't worry, let the tone come out. Try to start singing at a higher pitch, don't start low and go up. Just don't tense up and instead focus on blowing a bit of air and producing a high tone. It might sound extremely airy, but that's what falsetto is. If it isn't airy, it's most likely head voice. If that didn't help, PLEASE let me know (and it might help if you could further explain the "scratchy" part) xx

    • Mjsjeed What I meant by my voice going scratchy is how I said it cuts off and loses tone. I blow a little bit of air but that doesn't help it all (at least sometimes or rarely). I notice my voice taking short pauses and it sounds off when it keeps going over and over again. I can agree that I realized that I would start low and go up. I won't do that now. Grazie per il vostro aiuto. I'll try to practice when I feel as if I'm dedicated to. Salute!

  • I noticed that unique vocals like zyan, camila etc they have many prb in their vocals but that makes them unique and recognisable. ... and ultimately they will shine and survive for long run. On the other hand good vocalist but no uniquenesss they will shine but not for long run. ...

    @roksanarahman8858@roksanarahman88586 жыл бұрын
    • Zayn doesn't have "many problems" regarding his vocal technique. Timbre and vocal technique are separate factors and are completely unaffected by the respective other. That being said, I'm sure Zayn will "shine in the long run", because he's a) a talented musician and b) a respectable vocalist. I understand your point, and it does apply when talking about intentionally bad techniques in cases such as Britney Spears. In this case however, I can't support your statement- especially because ACTUAL bad techniques can cause vocalists to lose their voice...so, "shining in the long run" probably wouldn't be possible. Thanks for commenting, have an amazing day xx

    • Mjsjeed my actual meaning was they hv uniqueness in their voice which makes them special and u can clearly differentiate them from others and that is need in this industry. ..

      @roksanarahman8858@roksanarahman88586 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, I got you. It's just that there is no connection between that and their vocal techniques. Other than that, I agree- even though it's not a necessity to get far in the music industry, it does make it easier (assuming people like your unique sound, obviously) xx
