  • Most of my life I wore second-hand shoes. At first, because I was young and poor, then later because I'm old & stingy. I learned how to restore shoes from an old black shine man from the old school, he had a stand near to where I lived. He would pop the shoeshine rag to keep time with his whistling. He knew all kinds of tunes. As a sideline, he would hunt good shoes down from thrift shops, fix them up & restore them and sell them at his stand. Made a good living. Sent his kid to college. Beautifully shined shoes always show you are not a slob or a bum. There a lot of beautiful shoes sitting in thrift shops. I am glad someone is showing other people how to do it. It makes or a warm place in my stingy heart when I get a compliment on shoes that I paid $4 for. I shine my shoes every day and I'm 68 and retired. It's like meditation or something, very relaxing.

    • Your comment sir just made me smile. I don't own any good pair of leather shoes but if i do own one in the future it would surely come from a thrift store and not some fancy store. It would give me great satisfaction to give it back it's life. I would definitely enjoy every moment restoring it to its former glory. ☺️

  • I heard about a guy, on hearing of his neighbor's early death, he volunteered to come over and shine the shoes of the whole family. I don't know that he did it your way, but come time for the funeral, it was one less headache for the bereaved widow and her children to worry about. Probably the last thing you'd think of doing for somebody in that horrible position, but it was his way of helping, and it did help. Others brought food, sent flowers, the usual, but this one kindness meant more.

    • @chocobonita well I do have another lady now. She was just a long distance friend for a long time,. She lived in Florida, I'm in Alabama. I was helping her write her book. Anyway, her seamstress shop went under, and she was going to be without a place to live. I wanted the company more than anything, so I went and got her and brought her here... just as friends at first... but over time it's become like she's my wife, though technically we are not married, I see it as the same. We're both pretty feeble these days, so neither of us can to a lot. She found a way to make a quilt for her great grandkid, I find things to fix and sell on ebay, it keeps me occupied anyway. I also fix toys and such and anonymously leave them for kids around the neighborhood. Every once in a while I get to see them outside playing with the toys. Does my heart good.

    • toot tall I can’t imagine how that must have been losing your wife. Lack of human contact becomes debilitating we all need a companion to bounce off our ideas and to listen to. I suppose the older you become the more melancholically a person can become remembering the ease of days when popping out to see friends was easy. As an older mum to a small child in a city I don’t know I find I get terrible cabin fever (of sorts) having no one to chat to. Can you join a club?

  • Old soldier here (UK) I know i wouldnt be up to your standard with all these elite products youre using, this was my routine. Before a big parade, maybe 2 weeks, id start the process off polishing my boots, lots of applying polish, light buff off, repeat over and over again, then completely coat the boot in a thick layer of polish and use a lighter to melt it in, do this 4-5 times, then just water bull them with nothing else but a cloth (wrapped EXACTLY like youre doing!) and 2 fingers, using small circles. Spent hours watching TV and just circling, my fingers ache just remembering this shit!

  • I apply polish with my bare hands. That way, I always get the thin layers I am after. Buffing is done by spraying water onto the brush ( two quick sprays will do), going over the area four or so times, respraying the brush as desired. Spraying area with a quick spray and buffing with an old pantyhose brings out an even higher gloss. Repeat two or three times as desired. It works for me every time.

I’ve moisturized (saphir renovator) both shoes, cream polished, and a thin layer of wax. How often do I need to clean up the shoes? Do I need to use leather soap (saddle soap) to clean my shoes every time? Can I add moisturizer (saphir renovator) between cleanings? On KZhead, there are many videos about “how to clean shoes”, but no “how often, what I can do to protect my shoes between cleanings. Thanks so much for your vids. Learning so much from you and I’m so happy that I’ve found your channel!

  • I was wondering, when removing the old finish with acetone, when do you know when to stop to not damage the leather? Also, is the glossy finish resistant to scuffs and can you fix it with buffing? Thanks.

  • I just sit here thinking how to learn this skill teach my fellow country people how to bring back good old shoes to life. Ohhh u are amazing it looks easy but I am sure it takes hours to finish a pair.

  • After 2 failed attempts; on the third day and whatever patience I had left, I nailed it. With Red Oxblood shoe wax polish (all that I had available) and I attained the infamous mirror shine.

  • Lovely job. Quick question. When demonstrating your work the reflection of the square room in the shiny round toe cap means that the toe cap end up looking somewhat distorted. Do you have a light box or an outside area or somewhere that you could film the end result where the reflections would be better?

  • we larned how to Spit Shine in the Air Force, some would heat the wax first, most just used elbow grease. some cheated and used the spray on spit shine, but in sunlight it was purple, and it cracked. lol
