  • I appreciate Jesse's honesty when he admits his mistakes. I believe that is EXTREMELY helpful for the DIY community. How many people were screaming "Lap the valves... LAP THE VALVES...." And then Jesse comes in and says, "I was going to lap the valves... but..." * I just finished watching... apparently Jesse made a bigger mistake than just not lapping the valves. I'm glad the hand is doing better!!! Most importantly, he takes the necessary time to backtrack, and get it right. This should pay off in the long run. Just think of how many hours he's got on the Gehl, thanks to taking the time to do it right.

  • I for one was also "screaming "Lap the valves"", amongst other items such as lube the piston pin, rings, bearings. Just push the clips in with your finger. A dab of grease to hold the keepers, smack the socket with a hammer to get the keepers off of the old valves. Gapping rings, use a piston to push the rings down to the wear area. Clean the old gaskets off before reassembly. Most importantly prep and clean the deck then wipe with acetone or lacquer thinner to remove every trace of oil, wipe the head too. Loosen the adjusters before torqueing the rockers. Plus a few other minor items. I was glad to see the new parts going into the engine and I'm sure it will give years of service. Too bad the electrical issues had to happen. I'm glad your hand is OK! Please be careful, we want you to be around showing what hard work and determination can do. Thanks for another great video.

  • Jesse: It's always a good idea to label everything the best you can during disassembly. You never know how long it will take for parts to come in, and it may come a time during reassembly that you may not remember where everything goes. It's happened to all of us in the industry. Glad you have a wiring diagram and the ability to "troubleshoot problems". You are the man in my book..Certain areas are a one man job though. Learning how to bring home steak at the end of the week instead of peanut butter and bologna sandwiches, comes from experience. Keep on doing what you are doing...

If you ship that up to your other property, it will be worth buying a shipping container or even a semi box trailer to keep it out of the weather when its left sitting for long periods of time, it will stop the wildlife making home in it and making more wiring issues. • When I rebuilt VW engines, there was a whole science about installing new rings on pistons. There was end gap in the cylinder. Too much it would leak oil, not enough and it could scratch the cylinder wall. Rings had a bevel on one side and had to be installed in upright position so bevel was at bottom. Also, ring clearance had to be checked. Not enough clearance between ring and ring groove on piston and ring could bind and snap scratching cylinder. Too much and it could cause burning oil and lower compression. Oil ring grooves have to be cleaned, piston head cleaned before ring installation. A lot of work but worth it down the long run. But you already know all this!

If you think you've got enough pics, you DON'T!! Take more, from many angles. It's saved my butt a few times. Cheers, man. Can I get Pat some suspenders? Just wish it was a bit larger, but has come in handy for a lot of jobs thus far when it is bad weather outside. Great job getting thathat engine all back together and running, but i never had any doubts that you couldn;t do it. OMG! Your hand and pinky got it!! OUCH!! So glad that it is ok, and your doing better. was worried watching it in the video when it happened. great to have two working skid steers now. great for around the homestead, and also for the business when that gets up and running again as well.... about the house: will you ever have a garage around the house or closer to the house at some point?? Great that Pat has lost so much weight, he looks so much better and bet he is feeling better as well. IF you keep this machine and store it at the other place, please make sure that animals will not get to it and that it is well covered..small animals can get into it and chew on a lot of your hard work, just saying..

Anytime I've transferred values from an old head to a brand new one, it's key to lap them as the new head and it's manufacturing tolerances will be different to worn & used valves. • Great save, Jesse. I think you're absolutely right about somebody using gas instead of diesel fuel. But what a nice piece of equipment you ended up with. Now a suggestion: To prevent bearings from possibly running dry on the first start after a rebuild, consider slathering every single piece with assembly lube. It's made super sticky so if the engine doesn't fire right up, it'll keep those new surfaces cushioned when there isn't any oil pressure. Again, ya done good.

  • Jesse, I am always so impressed with your skills, your intelligence, and your patience. Is there anything that you CAN'T do exceptionally well?? I don't think so. I've never been a fan of long videos, but yours are the exception to my rule. I get so enthralled that the time goes by way too fast. You're a GOOD man, Jesse, and I am one of your biggest fans. By the way, I'm 72 years old, and 'm learning so much from you. Can't wait for the next video!!!

    • @@danwheeler5130 Hi Dan! I know you're Jesse's dad. I watch all of your videos too, and I know you have amazing skills as well. I've watched your entire home build. You and Mrs. W. can do everything too. The two of you have done an excellent job on your home. What a couple!!

  • Good job man! Glad you didn't lose a finger to a fan blade. With the correct tools for the job, that went quite well.

  • I used Vaseline when rebuilding engines. It would hold in place, provide proper lubrication on first startup, and then dissipate throughout the oil system after running. Worked like a charm every time without fail!

  • What a wild trash in the end, but you now have a nice running machine. The yellow snow comment brought back memories. Your son is growing/learning fast.
