  • I strongly advise you to purchase Jame’s “Strumming made simple” course.This strumming course has a comprehensive workbook that supplements the course videos. Finally, I am now more confident on hearing and feeling the rhythm 🎶 which means I can play in time.This is a comprehensive strumming course that caters for beginners leading to advanced.🎸 Everyone has rhythm but it takes Jame’s exercises and reflection to realise this.

  • Excellent lesson! One thing beginning guitarists struggle with is simply building repertoire. While I wouldn’t knock learning a song note-for-note to match the original recording, it is also important to learn simplified versions of songs! You can always add the embellishments later as your skills improve.

    • You’re selling yourself short! Lol I’m 65 and can’t remember lyrics to the great annoyance of my wife(a trained choral soprano) I think, At least for me, it takes a concerted effort to learn lyrics if I haven’t really learned the chords. I can’t think of two things at once! I think at our age our level of competency is proportional to the amount of interest and enthusiasm we put into our projects. Hope you have fun playing the guitar.

    @mboyer68@mboyer68 Жыл бұрын
    • It's all about patience my friend.. everyone's brain doesn't operate at the same level so it might take some time for some people to multitask ... But you can dial down the tempo of the song you want to play and once you get habituated with chords and lyrics.. you can dial up the tempo of the song... 1. Start with something very easy.. maybe like a 3 chord song 2. Alternate with lyrics and chords... Strum the chords and let it ring .. sing the line.. and then when there is a chords change again strum once hard and sing the lyrics .. If the sound fades away with one strum.. ring it once more.. Hope this helps

  • Two tips: 1. If you have more songs that are impossible to memorize (I have about 600 pieces in my essential selection songbook, and I gave up on remembering them fully), just write chords for one verse, chorus and possibly bridge in the line above the text. I have all songs on one page this way, even the long ones, like Telegraph Road. 2. Transposition is your best friend. For James, song number 3 needed transposition as he couldn't sing it without improper octave jumps. It is good to learn to transpose by heart, but not necessary if you transpose the song on paper beforehand (or use web tools).

  • Super helpful lesson and I hate to be that guy, but... Consider your audience before jumping in with Sweet Home Alabama. The lyrics: Well I heard Mr. Young sing about her Well I heard old Neil put her down Well I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don't need him around anyhow were a response to Neil Young's song "Southern Man" which criticized the central reason for the Civil War. In short, in some way it could be construed as celebrating slavery. And for those reading this, I'm just the messenger, no need to attack me about the history of two songs.

  • Thanks for the Sweet Home Alabama!!! (had difficulties with the strumming rhythm) As for the songs, I manage printing 2- 3 songs on an A4 page, with chords on top of each line, with 10 - 11 font size, if you fiddle a bit with the line spacing and page borders & columns layout. Writing chords on top right side also works for me sometimes. Rock me Mamma goes faster and louder in the chorus (it gives the song additional energy/dynamics)... but, it's a matter of preferences... Darius Rucker has a brilliant version of it.

    • @@Good_Guitarist Thanks! Wouldn't mind if the video was a bit longer if you do this "beginner friendly" version and then an "intermediate" level that adds a few fills for people who have mastered the beginner level. For example, on Sweet Home Alabama Guitar the "intermediate" level would have a few more of those famous fills😊. Thanks for the lesson again and have a lovely day!

  • As I said before, great lesson James, good choice of songs, great vocals, great teacher. You are awesome Man. I know,cos I'm a pretty good teacher myself. As we say in our old native language (Gaeilge) Athníonn cíoróg,cíorógín eile. Meaning...it takes one, to know one.Maith thú

  • I wouldn’t say that I am a a beginner guitar player but I certainly SOUND like one. Lol I go through phases of playing for 3-4 hours a day and then not playing for months. I love the video. I’ll try and stick with the songs and see what happens. FYI, I can’t sing at all. I think that could be why I don’t stick with things. Any thoughts?

  • James - loved your short section on Swing feel...longer downstrokes...Blues feel! Do you have a longer video lesson on how to sound as Blueseee as you?

  • Hi James - love your videos. Thank you for sharing so much of your talent. If you do another campfire songs, maybe include these that, as a beginner, I've been doing pretty well with: Blowin in the wind, Leavin on a jet plane, Time of your life (Greenday),and Mr Tambourine Man. I look forward to trying these that you suggested. I've had fun with Cover of the Rolling Stones and Mr Tambourine Man as well.

    • When I was planning this lesson, I had a list of about 15 tunes. Those were ALL on there. I'll do another one next year with those 4 + one other.
