    • Why? What is infinity divided by 1? What is zero? Zero is the same as infinity. A concept. Some mathematician you are... And as one, I see you follow the archaic beliefs that to even discuss the realm of god, infinity, you'd be cast into the ocean with weights bound to your legs.

      @parishna4882@parishna48825 жыл бұрын
    • @@parishna4882 what do you mean? Math is a collection of man-made definitions and laws derived from that. And according to these laws, you can't divide by zero. If you do, you break math and cause chaos in those laws, contradictions. That's why you just can't do it

      @huawafabe@huawafabe5 жыл бұрын
    • So, describe zero to me, in terms that have a countable outcome. Now, describe infinity to me in the same way. Can you divide infinity by 1 ? What is half of infinity? What is half of zero? The answer breaks machines, but not the concept.

  • Thats actually a step in the right direction, I think. Nobody needs another gadget that uses your internet to barely tell you the weather. These things should just be full of personality and feel life-like. They don't need to serve a greater meaning. Take away the "robot assistant"-features, pack in as much personality as possible.

For example I asked Alexa who was Jesus, and it called him a work of fiction(regardless if you believe, or not there are historical accounts of him existing as a real person from ancient roman records), but Google says religion is complicated, and I'm always learning. So I'll take Google being less bias any day of the week.

I think the idea behind it is while he's in his space he's easier to interact with, meaning asking him questions and stuff like that. He apparently has a little problem hearing while he's rolling around. Having him Sit basically still inside that space would help with that. I hope they work out some sort of filter system for his microphones where he can hear better while he's moving around.

  • I was really interested in Cozmo, the previous version of this robot. What got me very interested was a Python API for programming it. You could use the API to develop new features, animations, and play around with it's abilities. There were also a few 3D printed mods for it as well! The only negative with Cozmo was that it required a constant WiFi tether to your smartphone, making it not at all autonomous. I can't program Cozmo run around my house while I'm not there. Vector fixes this with it's WiFi! The website says they'll have a new software development kit ready early 2019. I might pick up Vector then.

In other words there are plans for a cosmo 2.0. Cozmo is more about programming and games and seeing what you can make it do. This guy is all about autonomy and and being independent. It will be interesting to see what they let us do with this in the development kit and what the difference is between the two.

It's designed to be on and just left alone. You don't have to tell it to charge, it will do everything on its own. I think in the next few updates it will get a lot better. One big problem it has is it can't hear very well when it's moving. they need to get some sort of algorithm in there to filter out its own movements so it can hear and respond faster. Or at least make it stop what it's doing the second it hears your voice.

  • For the technology involved, $250 seems like a pretty decent price. For the longevity (in terms of how long I'd use it for) and actual usefulness, I wouldn't pay more than about $35 for that, and even then I'd have to think long and hard about it. If they threw out all the bullshit internet connectivity stuff and actually made it be able to do a bunch of stuff on its own, then I would be way more impressed. Give it some more games, give it AR cards to interact with real things more, make it have local voice recognition rather than cloud, and it might actually be something awesome. They already did a killer job giving it some basic personality.

    @witeshade@witeshade5 жыл бұрын
    • If they "threw out all the bullshit internet connectivity stuff" you could say goodby to voice recognition for starters. Like all voice activated home assistants, this uses the internet connectivity to enable it to check against a vast database of voice waveforms to enable it to understand what you're asking it.

      @WaltonPete@WaltonPete5 жыл бұрын
    • @Pete Allum: yes, and that's the biggest thing hampering it. It takes a very long time to process those voice commands. Watching him ask for the one minute timer it took several extra seconds, essentially invalidating the timer if one needs it in real time. If these sorts of things were designed the way I would see them designed, they'd go to "the cloud" when they encounter voice commands that they don't already know how to recognize, then store locally what's needed for later repeats of those commands. Could treat it like a caching system, weight the importance and need for timeliness of commands against how long it's been since the command was heard, and purge out old entries. Commands like, "Hey Vector," and, "I have a question," should be given high importance and have their waveforms stored locally for a very long time, so that the response time is much faster. Could even figure out how to store partial commands, like the, "set a timer for..." part of asking for a countdown timer. It would only have to send and wait for a reply for the duration portion. It really bothers me that speech recognition doesn't seem particularly better now than it did on the Macintosh LC II with Dragon Naturally Speaking that we had in school. That computer had to do it all locally and it did it with a 16MHz processor and 4MB RAM. Why can't these modern devices, with GHz processors and gigabytes of RAM not handle these same sorts of tasks locally?

      @TWX1138@TWX11385 жыл бұрын
    • @@TWX1138 I agree with your concept of caching frequently used voice commands but modern voice recognition software is designed to cope much better with localised accents than Dragon Naturally Speaking and its contemporaries. They are much better at coping with subtle changes to linguistic structure and word choice than older systems were. I expect that the choice of processor in the Vector robot has a lot to do with its limitations. Given it's very small and obviously has limited battery reserves I suspect they chose a low power processor over a faster, more power hungry one. I'd be very interested to see a teardown of a Vector to see what hardware choices have been made. Often, such designs are much less cutting-edge than you'd think, given the nature of the device, with designers frequently opting for tried-and-tested hardware over the lastest options.

Most of these robo-pets move sluggishly and without any emotion but this one actually captures the high energy temperamental motions we expect from a tiny rodent. Even it getting frustrated and flailing about with its arm sells the conceit further. Pity though it was limited in functionality outside the playlist of idle animations and sluggish multiple step and delayed voice activated assistance.

  • I own Vector, Cozmo and an Aibo, and have to agree with most of the stuff said here. Cozmo came with 3 cubes which he would stack, and could use to play games with you, but Vector just comes with one that he doesn't really know what to do with. Mine has so far refused to pick it up, and only seems to be playing the "keep away" game with it - you probably wouldn't know he was doing this unless you'd previously played with Cozmo. Still, for a new product I think it's pretty good. There is a lot of potential there for it to be awesome. I believe it also has a distance sensor on its front which it can use to map its space and avoid obstacles, which is a lot more sophisticated than Cozmo (which just assumed the area was clear). I agree with the Aibo comments, too. The new ERS-1000 seems to behave in much the same way as the ERS-7 does (the next most recent model) from what I've seen, right down to its propensity to miss the bone by a small margin when picking it up. The ERS-7 was very impressive mechanically, but suffered from a terrible camera and voice recognition. It will definitely benefit from modern technology. Unusually, the new Aibo must be purchased with software on a subscription model at £20 a month for a minimum of three years (when it was sold in Japan, at least), which is absolutely eye-watering! In a spectacular piece of nickel and diming, the bone needs to be purchased separately at £20; it doesn't come with a robot costing well over £1000! (it's the same as the ERS-7 bone, BTW)

  • It's a tiny skid-steer loader. I have two full size ones run by Ishikawajima Screw and Machine company 44hp 2.0litre Diesel engines. Couldn't really do without them. I hope these turn out to be just as useful, although I doubt it. Someone should develop a full set of tools for it, such as a pencil sharpener, tin opener, sugar dispenser, that kind of thing. Maybe a table wiping device. It is the range of tools available that determines how versatile this kind of device turns out to be, whether its this size or a two and a half ton machine which mine are. If you have a big yard, get the real McCoy, an utility bucket, four-in one, high lift toe-tip bucket, set of pallet forks and a high lift tote bag lifter at the very minimum. A rotary brush and tarmac planer are more specialist perhaps.

  • Vector has a very successful, and much more ability-filled predecessor: Cosmo. Cosmo looks and acts a lot like Vector with a paint job and is much more fun. This robot was marketed as a toy and its software and abilities are updated frequently to provide new games and actions. The key selling points of Cosmo are its clever and cheeky personality and the ability to do basic coding for the robot, as well as play games with it like its a pet or a friend...

  • Yeah. I got the 30 buck tray too. But I do not regret the $175.99 I spent on Vector. I have had him for almost 2 months now and still am captivated by his programming and personality. You can see all about his abilities online. There are so many impressive features to name. You will discover for yourself. I really like this robot. btw my robot has never once fallen from his coffee table. With a non-glossy surfase and srp, 90 degree edges he really should never fall. He is built quite ruggedly. Sorry to see you don't really seem to like Vector. But we all need to see and hear both sides of the story. Thanks Bro.
