  • Heck of a good Film! ..well worth watching..These Old War Films are just so much better than the modern ones because the story lines are realistic and believable

    • Many actors, directors, and technicians fought in that war, or were under occupation, or fled to the interior of the country. For example, Papanov (General Serpilin) was a veteran of the war, severely wounded in the leg and suffered from leg pain all his life.

    • EXCEPT for their modern soap operas- they made a bunch of them that use the War as a convenient backdrop for some silly romances. These older ones/styles are much better.

    • @@rescuepetsrule6842 One of my favourites was THE FIGHTING 69th. James Cagney was brilliant, and it was unusual for Hollywood in that the main character was a coward who presented an image of toughness. It really was a break from the gung-ho sterotype, and a tour-de force by Cagney.

  • Simonov's book is probably the best Soviet-perspective, tactical/operational level, first-hand account of those chaotic summer days and the desperate autumn of 1941, and how the Soviets were able to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and not only stop the Germans at the last moment but to husband enough resources to deliver a decisive counter-blow immediately after. I'm glad that this filmatization of it is finally available with english subtitles.

  • I have taken a liking to these old (1960s) Russian-language Patriotic (WW2) War movies. This is a great-looking restoration. The actors all seem to be excellent, even extras are moving with the animation and purpose of real humans. My favorite so far is Red Square, which is about a Civil War commissar who develops a relationship of trust with an ex-Tsarist officer.

Impressively made film, thank you for uploading it! The German tanks based on T-34 are also well made, well crafted, probably historically close to the story, it's a shame that there are no German subtitles or even a German dubbing.

One Stalin's son was catched by germans and they proposed to exchange him for general Paulus, who was captivated in Stalingrad battle. But Stalin declined that exchange, saying that he will not change general for soldier. In that lidership USSR can't loss.

  • Those bombers at 17th minute were TB-3s. Majority of squadrons and regiments with those were in reserve and avoided the onslaught of first days, but were sent without air cover (many remaining fighters were sent to do ground attacks) and suffered terrible losses. On the side, I enjoy quality of those aircraft models. I would like if modern movies tried some of those compared to lazy use of CGI which is often poorly employed and obviously fake.

    @kaletovhangar@kaletovhangar5 ай бұрын
    • They were nicely accurate with the aircraft (well, the Bf-109's were not quite there, but close enough) with the period-correct I-16 and TB-3's, also small arms, the 45mm anti-tank gun and trucks. That makes it even more painful to watch any of the tank scenes with those T-34's dressed up as late-war Pz-IV's with long-barrel 75mm guns and massive muzzle brakes - something that simply did not exist yet at the time. And same for the Soviet side in the second part - large-turret T-34/85's that simply would not come about until three years later. I kinda understand it as that's the WW2 hardware that still existed at the time of filming and was easy to acquire and use, but I also strongly suspect that one reason was that if the tanks were period correct - tiny, machine gun armed Pz-I's, just a little bit bigger Pz-II's with 20mm guns, Pz-III's and Pz-38's that still don't look very menacing compared to Panthers and Tigers, and the T-26's, Bt-7's and Komsomolets opposing them - they would simply look laughably small and puny to the modern viewer and would take away from the idea of an irresistible German juggernaut sweeping everything before it (something that they contrary to popular belief did not achieve by technical superiority anyway, but that's another matter entirely). In that sense modern Russian films such as Panfilov's 28 are much better in this department.

      @Stripedbottom@Stripedbottom5 ай бұрын
    • @@Stripedbottom Thing is though that majority of early war equipment was either scrapped or in museums. Only in some Soviet movies from 60s could you still see real Pz IVs and others.

Movie should been half this long, back to editing please. Fight scenes are very true to reality if you pay attention. Notice constant night flares, other movies don't show flares were constant.
