A hyena was looking after her cub that has passed recently. Wild dogs thought this could be a meal! They came in, but instead of trying to eat the cub, they decided to go after the mom.

It's incredible how they understand immediately that the fight is over when the second hyena arrives. They really got their maths figured out.

Well if they lose just 2 dogs they lose thier numbers advantage and would be forced to scrape by on much smaller forms of food which then makes the remaining members weaker aswell. Next thing you know starvation becomes a real threat so keeping as safe as possible becomes paramount. Same goes for any pack animal like wolves or hyenas... Even lions.

That was my first thought. It made sure its 6 was covered at all times by staying there.
She was protecting her ass. Notice how much blood is on her backside and how often the dogs attack her from the rear (giggity)? That's because that is how predators attack in the wild...they go for the hind legs and in particular the genitals. They attack the ass end because the ass isn't going to bite back. Eventually they get enough bites in to cause severe damage and severe bleeding which incapacitates whichever animal they are attacking. That is why you see the hyena basically sitting down for the entire time...watch again. Whenever she gets away from the stone monument, she is constantly sitting down while trying to spin around and bite the dogs. That is to protect the softer, um...flesh on her underside. It's a female hyena so she doesn't have balls or a dick to be attacked. THAT is what the wild dogs are targeting. The hyena can survive a bunch of nips and bites to her ass or her back, but once a dog rips a big chunk out of her undercarriage, it's all over.
Hyenas always looked like they were made out of spare parts, since nothing looks like it belongs on the same animal.

Wait. Hyenas are under more of a threat by Lions. Wdym. Edit: As far as I understand from researching these amazing animals, Hyenas rarely try to ambush Lions unless the Lion encroaches on the Hyenas territory. Rarely do Hyenas steal from Lions. Lions actually steal from Hyenas as Hyenas make a specific call when they kill something. Lions have picked up on that and now steal kills. Male Lions will sometimes harass and even sometimes kill Hyenas because they can. Hyenas got it pretty rough. Especially males.
I certainly hope everyone complaining about whoever is behind the camera just filming and not helping can have their chance to be a hero and jump into a pack of wild animals. They all deserve a Darwin award.

That's a vivid demonstration of how powerful a maternal bond can be. She knows her cub is dead, but still wants to protect it, at great risk to herself. This is fairly common in mammals.

The self-defense instinct incredible. The phrase "keep you back against the wall" has never made more sense. When facing multiple attackers, keeping your back to the wall drastically reduces the amount of opponents that can attack at once. Instinct is genius.

Indeed. The dogs instinctively know that they must be lightning quick and absolutely never let the hyena get its jaws on them. Hyena bite pressure is twice that of a Great White shark, and only exceeded by a couple other animals in the world. They are the jaws of death for a dog. There is no surviving a bite. With one hyena, they feel they can manage this little game. With two hyenas, it becomes far to risky.

For me one of the most interesting things to observe is when a cornered animal that's fighting for it's life has it's friend\s come to it's aid. Whether it's hyenas aiding hyenas, lions aiding lions, buffalos aiding buffalos, dogs aiding dogs, humans aiding humans etc. In this particular video it was also interesting to hear the cornered hyena's clanmate calling, outside the view of the camera. You know it's there, because you can hear it, but you can't see it... that is until the end when the hyena comes rushing in.
I find it amazing that he has enough sense to keep his back against that wall😮
Hyenas use the same tactics when they hunt going straight for the butthole so they can rip the guts out much quicker than trying to tear through the hide, muscles, bones etc.

That first was a female with not much fight. .she was simply there for her dead cub. The male finally showed up and the dogs knew he was a badass thats why 2 of them stopped earlier and watched from a distance like holy shit hes coming.

@miked1187 Their stamina is very similar. Especially when you consider a hyena has a heart twice the size of lion. That's a lot of oxygen that can be pumped to all the muscles. Like These wild dogs, hyenas can run for miles/chase down prey without tiring. Which, along with their intelligence and teamwork, is why they're both such successful hunters.

Lions also attack hyenas, leopards and other lions when they outnumber them, thats how it works in nature
