Mega Transports: Villagemove | Engineering Documentary
Moving an entire village in Sweden - a true mega transport!
Everyone knows it: Housemoving is a lot of work, requires excellent planning and costs time and money. Just imagine how it must be if you are moving an entire village - as a whole. Impossible? The dutch logistic and heavy transport company Mammoet says: Not for us! And that’s what they do: the Swedish city of Malmberget has to make room for a mine and therefore move to nearby Koskullskulle.
Because many of the houses in Malmberget are of high cultural value, the governmental mining company LKAB wants to move them in one piece. Preparations for this mammoth-project take several months. First, the team has to dig out the soil from underneath the houses and then fortify it properly. Beams are put underneath the house to make it ready to be positioned on Mammoet’s special transportation equipment.
The houses vary in size, with a weight ranging between 45 and 210 tons, the biggest one measuring 14 meters in length, 14 meters in width and 14 meters in height: The villa “Höijersbacke”, Malmbergets pride and joy.
The villa is special, because of its chimneys: They have to be extra-carefully secured to make sure the building does not collapse during lifting.
Millimeter by millimeter, the villa is carefully lifted up, the trailer drives underneath and takes it away - on narrow roads, through tiny villages, over steep hills all the way to its destination. Most important: The balance and the weight of the load needs to be engineered very carefully beforehand. On its way, the mega transport faces many difficulties - despite all the detailed planning…

  • Kinda annoyed they keep calling it a village. I mean it's probably technically correct, but I've always considered it a town. For me a village would be something like Liikavaara with ~50 inhabitants. I mean have you ever seen a village with a 13 story high-rise? Anyway the part in the beginning when they are deconstructing the foundation felt kinda ridiculous, 'very carefully' they say as the worker go at it with jackhammers and diggers. I mean I know it shouldn't be an issue but they made it sound like it was made of glass. But despite living 5 kilometers from Malmberget I don't really have a connection with it, the town have been declining since before I was born.

  • Fun fact: There's a very similar move that needs to happen in a relatively nearby town. This move was supposed to have begun as early as 2006, but was delayed due to disagreements on where it would be moved and who was going to pay. The mining company wanted to split the pay so that they paid half, and the state paid the other half, as the state was the founder of the company and the mine, and operated it up until about the 70's. It also wanted the town moved to the back of a nearby small mountain so that the town would be protected from cold arctic winds, and situated a bit higher to keep the temperature a bit higher, as the town was originally built with wind direction and elevation in mind to alleviate some of the issues of the harsh environment. The state on the other hand wanted the municipality to pay for the whole thing on its own, and for the town to be placed at a nearby flatland region with no protection from winds or temperatures as it would be cheaper. To add to this the state right around this time rewrote the taxation laws so that companies would pay taxes directly to the state instead of the municipality where they're operating in, causing the municipality to go from one of the richest in the country to one of the poorest, and has had problems maintaining infrastructure ever since. Ironically the mine is probably one of the most important resources the state has due to its ore being primarily high quality magnetite, rather than the usual standard iron ore.
