The Kalos region in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y gave us many cool new Pokemon. But a lot of people HATED Klefki when it was first revealed. "Object Pokemon are uninspired," they say... but now in this video, I'm going to show you that Kleki is actually pretty clever for many reasons! Some are more plausible than others. But all are still worth mentioning.

Klefki is how you do an "inanimate object" Pokémon -- it's clear what it's referencing, but there's a believable, in-world explanation for why it is the way it is. An excellent design in my opinion.
Counterpoint: It looks stupid and lame. It doesn't matter how much thought was put into a design if it still looks stupid, ugly, or lame.
@@verbatim7508 what if it’s supposed to look lame or ugly? Like Duncesparce, Garbador, Bruxish, Muk, Voltorb/Electeode, Magneton?
@@verbatim7508 also question, how is it stupid or lame?
@@dinoshotgun If it's supposed to, then that's fine, but I don't think Klefki is supposed to be like Muk or Garbodor. I think they were trying to make something "cute in a unique way," but wound up just making something dumb instead.
@@verbatim7508 I’ll be honest though I don’t like Klefki ether, though my reason is that it feels unfinished, like it’s supposed to evolve but didn’t, not every Pokémon needs an evolution mind you but it just felt like this one should have evolved into maybe a safe that’s bulky and defensive? I don’t know it’s just one of those Pokémon that I thought should have evolved but didn’t
It'd be fun if there was a variant of Klefki that collects key cards like the kind hotels and train stations use.
This is a great idea for a certain, future-focused, teen-rated jrpg that a certain someone is making!
Spongebob: Write that down WRITE THAT DOWN!!! Patrick: Eeeuaaaaggh!!!
i think there should be one that steals peoples credit cards
Emmet and Ingo's new ace pokemon
Or maybe Pokémon trading cards.
Kelfki could have been the new Spinda, there's a set of keys that it has a chance to pull 4 from and those keys have a chance to be any colour. Every Kelfki is different just how every keychain is different.
Typo. But yeah, that would be cool.
@@leandersearle5094 spidna is an actual pokemom, it's a formal type with own testerone as it's ability unlike decklion with it's dollar change ability
@@youtubestudiosucks978 I'll take your word for it, I don't keep up that well.
Yes yes, always « could have » or « should have » with gen 6…
I genuinely can never remember if it's "Spinda" or "Spidna" 😂
I remember seeing a Klefki for the first time and immediately adding it to my team, his name was Merry and he was a cold blooded killer.
Was he with you at the E4?
@@orobwalsh2581 yes! X&Y was the last game where I only added 6 to my team, and got through the game with only them. Nowadays I use a bunch of them!
It’s all fun and games until the keys can absolutely decimate dragons
I immediately fell in love with Klefki when X and Y was leaked. Didn’t use it on my main team, but I did use it competitively.
Is he with you in Scarlet and Violet?
I personally love Objectmon, They're the perfect culmination of that childhood era where we just took an object and pretended it was an animal. I mean Who hasn't pretended a pair of pliers or a staple remover was some tiny beasty. So Klefki just being a little guy who's also a Key ring is just funny to me.
I loved my dad’s iPhone tripod as a kid. It had legs that could be bent and posed, and it’s “feet” were magnetic so it could “climb” my metal bed frame. I think it might’ve been my favourite toy, though my dad kept asking for it back so he could use it.
The designer for Klefki and Victini is also the Art Director of Scarlet & Violet.
Say it ain't so. It sounds weird since I think these two designs are good compared to 90% of the SV dex. I mean come on, flamingo? Who thought that was a good design.
@@MusicComet I do. Its simple, gets the point across, design isn't cluttered or overdesigned like many "fixed" pokemon designs or fakemon, and has fun little subtext for its with its main body being a boxing glove.
Everyone always points at flamigo like it's the standard for all the gen 9 pokemon, to such an extent that I wonder if that's *all* you can find to criticize. I liked a lot of the new stuff, it made me feel more than some of the past gens
@@MusicComet thats the one example i dont like too much the rest of the sv deck is fire to me
@@MusicComet I love the SV dex though! All the puppy’s we got too 🥺
I've never understood why some people don't like object mons considering they've been around since gen 1. I love how unique the concept is and klefki is definitely one of my favorites.
I love the object mons, I loved Trubbish and garbodor too. Why do people hate them???
That irony I find pretty funny indeed. Complaining about uninspired new designs but do not blink an eye at living magnets, a glob of goo, a rock with arms ... .
I'm not a big fan of objectmons just because my preference is for animalistic designs. I don't really like geodude either. That said I actually really like clefkey, it's a great design that won me over
I get people who just dont like object mons overall, but being like "GeN 1 HaS nO bAd DeSiGnS aNd EvErYtHiNg AfTeR iT iS bAd EvEn ThOuGh GeN wUn dOeS tHe SaMe" is seriously annoying, how is klefki less creative than voltorb or muk?
There is so much negativity, why no happi?
I like the concept of Kelfki's jiggling their keys at Dog and Cat Pokémon. Perhaps even at Dragon Pokémon. "Fear me and my keys!"
Dragons do fear it because its fairy type
@@jakoblent4694 That was part of the joke.
5:59 its French name is "Trousselin", made from "trousseau de clés/clefs" ( the French word for key can be written "clef" or "clé" ), that can be translated as keychain, and "gobelin", the French word for "goblin". So yeah, it's literally a keychain goblin that steals keys.
@@DmnicegramappLockstinGnoggin Scam bot
Klefki should have an evolution that turns it into a keyblade
Make it a dark type.
Even better if its made up of all the different keys its collected, like they all got meshed together to make it
Yeah; and then they can use that evolution to unlock their spare money to pay for the incoming lawsuit from Disney/Square Enix.
@@nitroweeb41 This is the best response
@@ArcherOfHoshido Thank you.
I know i'm probably in the minority, but I really like a lot of the weirder Pokemon that's not just an animal. Sure there's a lot of animals that could still be used, but soley relying on animals kind of halts creativity after a while. Besides, the series is called Pocket MONSTERS, not Pocket Animals.
I agree ×2
Agreed, monsters, yokai objects and weird humanoids were the base, having a plain animal stops parts of the fun from going
Kelfki is one of my favorites. Also in world building of pokemon that people neglect ,because they don't write fanfics and fake documentaries about pokemon like I do, is in there. Like think of how convenient to have a sentient floating Keychain to make sure you lock your door. Especially for people who have mental problems I mean pokemon as service animals needs to be explored more. Like the Slugma short was great.
Service Pokémon are a great idea and I want more. Seniors wouldn't have to worry about a thing with so many helpful little creatures around.
Definitely agree with you on that. Service pokemon is a very interesting concept.
Speaking of support pokemon, Morgrems should be classed as emotional support pokemon given the Violet entry for them
Lmao, the cringe fanfics still exist it seems
@@AdminAbuse Everything you do is cringe. Cringe is just you being afraid someone will be shamed for enjoying things and, by proxy, you for letting them.
Got one on my pokemon D&D team. It's name is Klefi and it holds my keys and attaches itself to my characters tool belt. Klefi is very useful for my handyman character.
who else was on the team?
@@thedumbduck9253 Rotom, Machoke. Diggersby, and porygon. They all serve different functions for my characters job as a handyman.
When I came across Klefki I was like Okay! You are coming for me. Just in case I lose any keys I know where to look.
Can we just appreciate the funny things lockstin does in sponsorships? Only youtuber sponsorships I watch honestly
I had a Klefki on my team. Total powerhouse. I love this pokemon.
I swept someone in draft league with iron defense calm mind Klefki. It was hilarious. My opponent had zero counterplay for it
I used to use one in a mono fairy team. I can't really remember how well it performed but it must've been decent since its on one of the few mons I used in that team
@@12jswilson Cool, congrats! In my very first draft league match I had to face such a setup Klefki. I didn't bring a phazing move. Luckily its only attacking move was Draining Kiss and I could PP stall it with Calm Mind Necrozma. ^^ In the end I just spammed Fire type attacks until I got the crit and won the match. Klefki was way scarier than the rest of the team combined, including Weavile and Aegislash. :D
@@Hammerbruder99 draft is like that. It's when someone brings a mon I wasn't expecting that I start getting very worried.
I don't get why object-mon get so much hatred. Yeah they're not immediately the most creative looking Pokemon, but they're at least a tier above generic animal Pokemon.
As a person with a cleft palette i had no idea that Klefki kind of has it. Blew my mind! Thank you for educating people about the condition since it its common but not common enough to be common knowledge if that makes sense? One of the many reasons that this channel is such a gem❤️
Imagine if you gave your safe key to a Kelfki, it went and got caught by a trainer who then went off on their journey without realising.
I'd assume you'd own the Klefki first. Like, who'd give their key to what's basically a wild animal?
@@AuraPhoenix1500 Idk, reminds me of some story about some chick who locked herself in a tower and it was said whoever could open it could marry her, but the key was around a cat's neck and no one could catch or kill it for it. Then one guy just tries to be nice to the cat and it turns out the lady was the cat or something.
@@edwardnygma8533 Can't really see too strong of a connection there, but thanks for the story anyway...Mr. Riddler?
@@AuraPhoenix1500 Many of the people, in the show at least, don't seem to keep their 'partner' in their Pokeballs. Some of them, particularly those who aren't trainers, just seem to befreind otherwise Wild Pokemon. That's where my hypothetical scenario came from.
@@AuraPhoenix1500 You give the key to a wild animal in the hopes that no one can catch it and use it. Not a strong connecting but I guess it's there.
With all of the new evolutions and variants we've been getting, I'm curious to see if GameFreak would revisit Klefki to make a literal skeleton key.
So... Fairy/Ghost type, perhaps?
Or give it a Evo to turn it into a lock
My son was born with a cleft lip, a cleft palate, and a cleft gum line. He healed well enough that most people don't even notice the scar. It was surprising when I had him how many people had never heard of a cleft lip.
I will always find it hilarious that in EVERY GENERATION (except Gen 1 & 2) people complained about inanimate object and food Pokémon. Best examples: Vanillite, Clink Clank, Trubbish… now that I think about it, most of it was Gen 5. But everyone seems to forget that Geodude is a floating rock with arms, or Eggsecute is a bunch of eggs (seeds).
What I love, and miss, from Gen 1 and 2 is the art style. Not the games, or even the Pokémon designs; but the out-of-game art style was, and remains, one of the most iconic.
Box art.
I'd have to agree, the original official art was sick as hell
Can't wait for the video on the ruinous quartet
I keep thinking of a circle of fifths in its design, which is a way of organizing the twelve chromatic pitches as a sequence of perfect fifths, and there are 5 keys along klefki’s circle. The keys in its art would be the C, F, Db B and E major scales. The E major scale key(the yellow) has 4 dots, like the 4 sharps in the E major scale. Don’t know if it has any relevance but I found it interesting.
While looking at the new Flamigo which is literally just a flamingo, I think a lot of people forget that Pineco is literally just a pine cone, same effort in naming too But at least he evolves
Am I the only one who loved vanillite and/or was fine with gen5’s object-mon? Also klefki is one of my all time favorites, let’s gooooo!
Klefki is actually one of my favorite Pokémon. I am a huge fan of the Fairy Typing in general, but I love the mischievous nature of this one specifically. A lot of whimsy went into this design and it always surprises me how under-appreciated it is within my friend circles. Great video!
Klefki is very underrated
Hmm I like the cleft lip aspect. I never noticed it before because in my language it isn't called a cleft lip. I doubt this was intentional unless the key/cleft connection also works in Japanese.
It wouldn't have to just to the localization team each region gets different naming schemes depending upon various criteria
Black and White are still to this day my favorite Pokemon games. I look back at my memories with those so fondly.
I love klefki, it’s type makes sense lore wise, and it’s just fun tbh
I'm glad I wasn't into fandoms enough to know people thought Gen 5 sucks. I got Pokemon White 2 as a gift, the best pokemon of all time in my opinion (bug types for the win, thank you Gen 5). And I'm meh on Klefki, but thanks to your videos, I've learned to appreciate all Pokemon designs and the thought that is put into each and every one of them. I hope you do a Leavanny line video, though. It's my favorite pokemon, and I wanna see what this Mother Hen Phasmid Fashion Icon is based on.
10:26 People do the same thing in Köln. The Hohenzollernbrücke (the bridge across the rhine that lets trains way too close to the world famous Dom) is littered with locks too. The keys thrown into the river there are so numerous that they need to get a dredger every two years to dig up the building "metal shallow" so that ship traffic doesn't get impeded. They also remove the locks periodically as their combined weight puts quite the unintended strain on the bridge.
I love Klefki's design And in France, we don't even prononce the F in clef (I know, I know, it's stupid)
Keykey could also be read as Kiki which is an actual name so unlike the other redundantly named Pokémon, it’s cute!
I honestly watch these videos because they always make me go "Ah!... Interesting." not because of the Pokemon but because of the stuff I end up learning.
I'll never understand genwunners complaining about pokemon designs when some of gen 1 pokemon have some of the laziest designs. There's like 5 pokemon whose evolution is just adding another head. The complaint about trubbish being trash when grimer exists that is literal chemical waste.
I'm glad I really got into the community at gen 7. Everyone was used to the 3d graphics being the new norm and it looked a lot better than the previous gen. I watched the gen 5 and 6 anime first but I was 5 when the BW anime came out and I watched from the start but because of my age I didn't have a chance to get into the Fandom until right before gen 7 released.
my younger sister had a clef pallet no clef lip though. She was one of a few who were part of a land mark study on making the clef pallet essentially grow as she aged, it was really neat on how my family is a part of medical history now.
When mentioning medical conditions I expected a discussion on kleptomania, but the cleft lip thing was kinda mind blowing.
@ 2:39, I absolutely adore and appreciate the Teepo push. I love the Tales of series sooo you get another seal of approval from me! I knew I liked you are another reason!
5:54 Well, according to Swampy Marsh, Yokai are to blame: Yokai are everywhere / Causing you problems, messing up your hair / They'll trip you up, give you a flat tire / Or make your socks go missing in the dryer
i am commenting this to tell you that i enjoyed the FULL VIDEO that was released seconds ago
I will always defend Voltorb as good design for one simple reason... it's design was used as a gameplay mechanic. Unlike all the other "things are pokemon" designs, they utilized the Voltorb design in the ovwrworld in the power plant, making you second guess if you were picking up an item or starting an encounter. They didn't do the same with the ice cream cone or keys which, in my opinion, makes Voltorb a much better design... even if it is a pretty simple one
Also will always defend it as a better design than flamigo. If I went up to a random person and told them to imagine this Pokémon that knows nothing about Pokémon, it would take a bit longer describing voltorb over literal flamingo (his neck tied in a knot is nonsensical and adds nothing to the design lore or gameplay wise, he’s just a flamingo)
In defense of Vanillite’s line, they’re icicles, not ice cream cones.
People way too often mistake simple design for bad design. Those are not the same thing and I agree that voltorb's design is a good one. Electrode on the other hand just feels like they really wanted give voltorb evolution but didn't know what to do with it.
@@TJskillz169 L take it’s not “just a flamingo” it’s also based on a balloon animal and a lawn ornament/pool toy which is a unique combination You know execution isn’t everything What makes a Pokémon design good is its inspirations and all the different things that make it a unique and inventive combination and all of the time and effort gamefreak put into researching all the ideas Which is why I say there are no bad Pokémon designs Because every Pokémon has some level of attention to detail put into them Even if you can’t tell based on surface level at first

0:46 Me when I see lockstin has a key to a Honda: FINALLY MY QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED!
i was born with a cleft lip and palate- wish it healed as well as the photos shown there but i never put it together that klefki (unintentionally or not) was referencing that i already liked it but i have a new appreciation for it. like a kindred spirit
You should make a video explaining the reasoning behind types strengths and weaknesses for all types! Like how water is effective against fire because water puts out fire! I’d be really curious seeing some potential reasons for some of the more obscure ones! You always do amazing research and are super informative so it would be an amazing video coming from you!
Oh! Chatalaine's! Morgan, Evelyn, Nita and Dana were also introduced in Kalos! Fun little commection there!
I always Klefki was just the cutest thing, never understood what anyone could dislike about it
The amount of happy brain chemicals that get released whenever i see that "Pancakes!" clip show up is too high. Don't stop, please.
Im just glad Lockstin learned how to pronounce Cacophonous. Remember the one video where he kept pronouncing "Cacophony" like "kaka-phone-ee" instead of "kuh-koff-uh-nee?"
Thank you for talking about one of my favorite Pokémon! Very interesting to know more about it.
I kinda like Klefki he's a fun little troll who makes sense as a fairy type who like's stealing shiny objects.
4:26 actually there are four kinds the three you mentioned and the percussion clef which is used for drums
Reminded me of the time i caught a Klefki and named it Printer. Why? Because I remembered the vine about a guy asking someone to toss him his keys and she threw a printer at him. “I thought you said printer!”
This channel must have a pretty big group of people behind it, pretty cool. I love the unique vibe
When you mentioned the lock and key bridge i was ginna comment about them getting rid of the keys but you beat me to it! I love that you added that
So happy to see some objectmon love! I hope to see more in the future :) 💚
Cologne also has a bridge like that (called Hohenzollernbrücke) with love locks and it’s still all there it’s kinda cool seeing something like that present in other countries makes me wonder who did it first tho since I‘ve seen it in some other cities too
I've always liked Clefkey as a pokemon. Especially it's potential gypsy inspirations, essentially collecting "lost" keys as good luck charms. Also, I like the idea of these missing keys actually getting up & leaving on their own.
I know the beginning is a recounting of how general gamers felt at the time, but it's still so tiring as an x and y fan to go through this over and over.
I remember everyone hating mega-evolutions. Now they want them back. You can do nothing right thes days
I remember my Klefki saw it in the fairy type gym and when I found my first wild one I had to catch it and it was a beast
As someone with a cleft palate I really warmed up to klefki after this video
Please look at the lore behind Tinkaton and Corviknight in Scarlet & Violet. It's very interesting.
Great video. It make me have a interested in the keys 😂. Also i love to see you make a video on baxcalibur. I really want to learn more about it
I recently started playing pokemon showdown and part of the reason I went with a monotype fairy team was because of Klefki's design. I still remember the object-mons being controversial (like the chandelier one) but looking back now they were actually pretty cool.
I do like the gag of putting googly eyes on anything and being like, "Behold! A Pokémon!" quick, stick googly eyes on your mattress!
I never picked up on Klefki having a cleft lip, I always just saw it as "it's a Key Pokemon, so it has a standard looking keyhole on it" to tie in with the key motif, but now that you point it out it's something I'll always remember. I also never picked up on the music clef aspects of it either, I had just always assumed that it was klepto + theft + key for it's name, referencing it stealing keys that it likes and such.
🎵Key key, do you love me? Are you riding?🎵 🤣🤣🤣 Sorry, I just had to! 🤭🤣😅
Ok, I can't unsee...now I want a Tales of Xillia Review xD, that teepo plushy is so cute
I always thought that it kinda looked like a rotom, protrusions from the top and bottom and two arms, plus it’s cheeky like Rotom
I adore Klefki, but struggled to come up with a good nickname for my little one besides “Jiggles”. I knew about the musical inspirations, and was looking at the different clefs when it occurred to be that my Klefki had the ability Prankster. And that’s when it hit me. Pranksters cause trouble… I named my little Prankster key Fey “Trouble Klef”!
I have finally know the *keys* to a great pokemon design Great video, also i really would like to see a video about the origins of the paldean pokemon’s design, just like you did with gen 8
Interesting. My key ring has a treble clef keychain on it.
Klefki is my favorite Pokémon so to see a video describing so much etymology in its name has made my day.
I'm still eagerly waiting for a cleverly designed safe, phone book, or printer.
I was upset that Klefki did not evolve into a Keyblade.
10:50 yeah I was like "wait how many Tons?!... on a bridge?!"
I remember when I first saw klefkey, I thought "oh neat a fairy that steals keys, what a little prankster. I hope people don't just think it's a living key ring."
Pokemon seriously needs to hire you i would LOVE a regional/divergent form of Klefki that steals socks. And you just came up with that like! On the fly!!!! This is like the PERFECT example of the fanbase growing up, inspired by the series/IP, going on to make said IP even better if they were to be hired!!!
Oh, I remember seeing a commercial about surgeries for cleft lips as a kid! It talked about the possible side effects of having cleft lips and before-and-after pictures of kids who got the surgery smiling. I don’t remember what it was called, but I found it really interesting.
I was just thinking about you making a Klefki video yesterday
Now im intrested on Klefki. It has a cute desighn though in never thought putting one on my team cause it didnt look good with the team but now i learnd about Fairy Lock which i didnt even know it was a thing
I always really liked klefki. It's just a little fae creature that collects pretties it finds, very relatable and a great concept for a steel type fairy.
Klefki is among my favorite pokemon. I was happy to see it in the new gen. Gen 5 got hate because it didn't have any old pokemon and people were just burnt out. I actually burnt out on gen 4 so 5 was enjoyable again. Good video.
There's a lock bridge in San Antonio as well.
I was hoping Austin would mention Cetoddle when talking about cleft lips. That is all I can think about when I look at Cetoddle.
Here's the the thing. In the first couple of generations the starters were based on animals with a fantasy design twist, but were still members of a species. Their designs were simple enough for each individual within a species to have its own individual, unique personality. For example, each individual venasaur or charzard can have its own unique personality and persona separate from other venasour or charzard. Your venasour can be a fierce king of the jungle while my venasour is a gentle giant. However, with newer starter designs their designed with a very specific personality as the fundamental aspect of its design where there is no way for each individual to have its own unique personality. For example, Cinderace has the soccer theme taking ower its design way too much were there is no way to tell your cinderace apart from my cinderace (or anyone else's). Cinderace is not a species; cinderrace is one character. Furthermore, cinderace's and incinaroar's designs don't allow the player to imagine or give their pokemon personality. Instead the game forces one personality onto the starter which again means that every cinderace is the same.
Yeah feels like it started going in that direction after Kalos funnily enough. It didn’t fully take over after that but man did it start snowballing out of control…
But half the fun of giving your Pokémon personalities is subverting expectations. Cinderace is a football player yeah but that doesn’t mean it can’t have an interesting personality. Competitive, anxious, lethargic, don’t let a design limit creativity. That’s how I try to see it at least
I mean you can because of their natures and the little descriptions in the summaries
That’s not even true at all lol Being heavily themed on one thing they can still have a variety of personalities Have you seen the anime
@@madnessarcade7447 I've watched the anime since it came out in North America. And you can't tell Goh's and Leon's cinderance apart. However, not every recent starter is like this. Sceliderge doesn't have a specific personality baked into its design, but Meowscarata does.
So Klefki can upon portals to other places in space-time and travel between dimensions using its keys? So it's basically the Keymaker from Matrix: Reloaded, then. Fitting since in that movie, the Keymaker was being kept locked away by the Merovingian, A.K.A. "The Frenchman."
Great vid. Love klefki hes my little guy who pranks people
I actually had a cleft palate when I was a baby! It was one of the things I had operated on. Don't recall being told I had a cleft lip, though. Didn't realize the connection to klefki, though, that's interesting! Same as the origin of the word "clef", neat to learn something here!
