Toxic Cost of Going Green | Unreported World
Unreported World investigates the dirty business of cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mineral is fuelling the planet’s green revolution, but at what cost?
Around seventy percent of the world's cobalt is mined in the Central African country, mostly from the southern Katanga area, thought to be one of the ten most polluted places on earth. Reporter Jamal Osman travels to Kolwezi, a city dependent on supplying Cobalt, a critical component for electric cars and rechargeable batteries. Residents are employed by large multinational companies, or in smaller, and more dangerous artisanal mines. We meet the men who clamber down dark weaving airless tunnels to extract cobalt for as little as $150 per month. But is the paycheck worth the health risks that doctors have uncovered?

This comment, along with many here, speaks from great levels of compassion which I can appreciate, but also suffers from levels of ignorance due to knowledge being formed from just a 20 minute long video. Cobalt is sourced in many countries other than just DRC, in these countries the conditions are much better for the miners and they are built in a way where it is either far away or has ways to prevent toxication of surrounding people. The issue is that DRC just has sooo much Cobalt, a populous of entrepreneurial go-geters, and a government who is corrupt. So, conditions in company owned mines where we see the trucks coming out of will be much better than those in the Co-Op ran smaller mines operated by local congolese. THis is because there is very lax and not enforced safety standards here. So, when a company finds a big reserve of Cobalt, they build a mine. These reserves are usually far away from cities and large populations. However, congolese hard working miners move in from all over and choose to live very close to these mines and reserves because they do not have cars or public transportation that allows them to commute form safer locations to the mines easily. Companies have moved in to do a better job at tracking where their cobalt comes from, trying to make sure its not from the worst conditions - for example, Tesla now uses blockchain to verify where its cobalt and nickle comes from. I am not sure how Chinese companies play into this.
@@ShroomCorp naive and ignorant. Even if it's true that Tesla attempts to control the sources, doesn't negate the fact that they still contribute to the insatiable need for mining these items & causing harm to the locals. No matter how they try to control the source, they're 100% contributing to the demand/harm. And ignorant end-users who believe its everyone else but themselves 🤦🏻♀️

That's why Tesla said that for 2021 they hope to reach 100% renewable. I'm a marine engineer. I learned in school that there is almost nothing called "green" energy. Here in the West people will buy a Tesla and think themself the saviour of this green earth, while their car runs on energy produced by coal or other forms of petroleum. Their batteries, produced by cobalt, shipped twice across the world to reduce costs. If I had the chance, I would create a program. Through careful mathematics and calculations, it would help analyze carbon emissions, for example a trailer going from X to Y, with most of its variables. With the help of the UN make it mandatory to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Including this, because every inch of dirt excavated to mine these materials pump more CO2 than your car will produce in a year.
That’s a good idea but you’d be better off modeling pollution than CO2 , it’s a much bigger threat as this video shows
I'm not sure when the "green crowd" forgot elementary school biology, but plants need CO2. CO2 is not an issue, because if there were more CO2, the planet would ironically be greener from an increase in not only plant quantity but in plant size and output, meaning there'd be more food and good, clean oxygen available for the rest of the food chain. Remarkable both how the planet can self-regulate and how people have forgotten this.
Tesla sold in the US is made in the US by the way. It's the most American car you can comparing were all parts are made. And oh, the LFP batteries it uses for its standard range models are cobalt free... so are the new 4860 batteries they are rolling out.

Socialism is pushing the green agenda, not capitalism. Ev/green Subsidies and rebates are not capitalism!! They are part of the socialist global agenda.
@J B come on, don't be so naive. That's how the US conducts geopolitics as well. They just assigned IMF to do it for them. In fact, this is standard procedeur for any major countries. Ccp is just the latest party to do it. At least they didn't wait for a financial crisis to force their agenda. For us living in southeast asia, we still remember clearly how the IMF pushed their demands to our government back in 1997 in trade for monetary aid.
@J B China just got there. This has been going since end of colonization.
@J B Europeans are in africa
This is barbaric. The foreign organizations profiting from this should be named boycotted so it’s more expensive to pollute rather than behave in a socially responsible way. Financial pressure is the only way to make them change since profit margins is all they care about. The people and environment in Africa matter too.
Nah, it is our fault and governments. Congo is number one Cobalt producer and is not setting the price up so they can improve mining conditions. It's like owning a shop and letting your customers set the price, you will become poor this way... If the mining corporation/union demanded better conditions for their miners, this won't happen.
@Speed Junkie we you just said corruption, do you think the pennies will even reach the people at the bottom? It doesn't matter how much you blame the organization, it is the government that needs change. the organisations are set to make profit, that's the whole purpose of creating a business. Business and emotion should be separate
how to boycott the biggest brand out there? apple? samsung? tesla? microsoft? their "green" economy is bullshit
This is what the liberals want mandatory, I would start there. If they weren't pushing a huge LIE that everyone else is saying is a lie but they still try to enforce that we continue to do this to other nations instead of depending on our own capabilities.
@Speed JunkieThe liberals have been pushing this stuff way longer than Musk was a powerhouse.

I've worked in mining for ages. These gents will end up with lung cancer, COPD or silicosis at some point in their life. Secondly, wait until the electric grid fails from all the strain of electrical vehicles charging. In addition, *SUPPLY & DEMAND.* When electricity is needed more and more, the price goes up. Like petrol fuel in the summer (because people travel more). We are doomed.
There's always heavy toxicity around mineral extraction areas. Even in Canada, there's huge pollution and people close by pay the price. I wish these folks long life and good health. May the God look after them
There's always a way to do it properly and reduce or eliminate these risks, the question is , are mining companies willing to spend the money on it. They never do. Here in the US, they even loby to undo whatever little regulation we have left.
Is the customer willing to spend double or triple on a battery that is " ethically sourced" ? I'm willing to bet not many.

I wish I could help those people some way this is heartbreaking and they deserve better. We have to demand better
You can help by not buying an electric car. If multiple people understood that, this wouldn't happen.
They get what they deserve
We tried helping them, made them work, gave them freedom and look where that’s got us?😂🤣😂🤣
The best way to help these people is to let them fight for their own survival. If they really want better lives, they have to unite and fight.
You can start by not getting a new phone every two years and demand that your politicians support "right to repair" so the cycle of planned obsolescence is finally broken.
Elon musk should visit these people
The WEF is conveniently silent...
My heart bleeds. I have been promoting green computing ideas and never thought of damages it was causing to my Congolese brothers and sisters.
These people give their lives and children for green technology, yet how many electric cars will they be personally driving? How’s their own internet connection?
There have been invented sodium batteries that charge in a few seconds idk if that technology will be introduced or just hidden like inventions of Nicola Tesla.
I am a complete loss for words. This is horrifying. This madness has to end. It’s got to be exposed in a big way. These are very bad things. How much more can we go on this way?
Well if the cobalt is being mined primarily for all electric cars then I’m afraid the cat is out of the bag. I don’t see it stopping anytime soon
EVS MUST BE BANNED.
Till 2050
Electric vehicles are not a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen technology will ultimately win out. But the issue really is not about reducing emissions-the tyranny of 'net zero' hysteria is becoming clear. The reason we must find viable alternative energy sources is singular and simple: fossil fuels are running out! We are already past peak oil (for current stocks). And the problem goes beyond energy. There are many materials that rely on petroleum for their manufacture, everyday items, consumer goods, hospital equipment, and food production. The West is built on petroleum. The issue of oil running out has got nothing to do with emissions. 'Net zero' ideology and hysterical shrieking by global organisations about the end of the world and childish rhetoric about human extinction are designed to instil fear. And as you will know, frightened people are much easier to manipulate and control as they will be far more likely to give away freedoms and accept authoritarian rules to feel 'safe'. This is a very good documentary. The dirty backside of militant greenism must be exposed.
The only thing green about it is the money lining rich people's pockets.....
Thank you. The world needs to see the truth about these abominations, atrocities, crimes against humanity, hidden behind the lies of the rulers of this world. Power to the people, down with the evil ones perpetrating these acts.
Such documentaries should be all over the news!!

If only
The news won’t broadcast this because governments don’t want you to know. Because it doesn’t fit in with the climate change nonsense you’ve been fed.
and then what? nothing
Excelente documentário!
No churches? No missions organizations? No peace? No family life? No field clinics? No farming? Only massive and ongoing international exploitation!
I had no idea about this. Thank you for informing me of this atrocity.
What concrete changes do you plan on making in your life as a result of this new information?

My mother Africa. It pains me to see you misuse all your potentials. You should be the the richest continent. But corruption and greed won't let you prosper. It's quite sad
Only for a while.
Corruption and greedy from the whole world. We are sleeping but when we wake up, it will be game over.
