Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida urged members of the U.S. Congress to maintain their support of Ukraine on Thursday. During his address inside the House chamber, he told lawmakers to overcome "self-doubt" about America’s role on the world stage.
“The leadership of the United States is indispensable. Without U.S. support, how long before the hopes of Ukraine would collapse under the onslaught from Moscow?”
U.S. President Joe Biden's request for $60 billion in aid for Ukraine passed the Democratic-led Senate with 70% support in February. It has been stalled in the Republican-controlled House as Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to allow a vote.
Kishida said the fall of Ukraine could embolden China and spark a new crisis in East Asia.
"China's current external stance and military actions present an unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge, not only to the peace and security of Japan but to the peace and stability of the international community at large.”
Kishida and Biden held talks at the White House Wednesday where they discussed among other things joint defence cooperation including a new missile defence system.
On Thursday, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Junior joined them.
The meeting comes as China steps up pressure on the Philippines in the South China Sea over an area Beijing claims but international law says belongs to the Philippines.
The US, Japan, The Philippines and Australia held joint maritime exercises in the South China Sea Sunday ahead of this summit.

The US has poor credibility. US is more of a bully than a responsible superpower. Even its own democracy has become suspect after questionable voting in the last Presidential election. Certifying massively rigged Pakistani election as election with some irregularities further erodes US status. The US democracy is erratic & dysfunctional. It is widely influenced by the Corporate honchos, NGOs, Think Tanks & Lobby Systems which only gives US Congressmen exalted & arrogant importance about themselves rather than the true picture. That completely blurs their vision both of domestic problems & of international issues. No wonder, following Collapse of the USSR in 1991, the US miserably failed to successfully lead the world as the sole surviving super power even for one decade. One thing common between all the US led interventions is the spectacular failures in which they have ended: Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan to name just a few and Ukraine won't be any different. This has not only sullied US image but brought its allies in deep trouble in Afghanistan & Ukraine. Equally incompetent & arrogant US media failed to notice that Pakistan is bleeding US in blood & treasure through terrorist-training camps based in its illegally occupied territory of Baluchistan (Quetta Shura). Had it even nudged US politicians, to demand Baluchistan's legal status, it would have spared US enormous loss of blood & treasure. Closing the eyes on Mumbai terrorist attacks where the terrorists were ordered from Pakistan to kill Westerners & ignoring safe placement of OBL near Pakistani Military Academy rightly ended in defeat & ignominious expulsion of US from Afghanistan. Glorious arrogant sleep of the US also helped China get vital Indian Ocean access, CPEC through territories illegally occupied by Pakistan. China also annexed Spratly Islands & militarized them. US is failed superpower, Seeing US entanglement in Ukraine & Hamas Wars. if China quickly annexes Taiwan, then US will be reduced to the status of Trans-Atlantic power of WW2 vintage only. US is building alliances in Indo-Pacific to gradually strangulate China which may force China for early action on Taiwan.
