Slingshot Bands Demystified!

This video is aimed at slingshot enthusiasts only!
The whole community always wondered why and how tapered bands are faster and more powerful. Lots of theories and guesses, but no data.
This changed when Destin came to Germany, with his great professional grade super high speed cam in tow!
Finally, at last, reliable data.
You MUST subscribe to Destin. Destin's channel can be found at
/ destinws2
Anyway, this video demystifies tapered bands. The hi speed video allows accurate acceleration graphs, and side by side comparisons.
Dan, aka ZDP189, has much more calculations on his blog
( tinyurl.com/blqwmvh ), I recommend reading it!
For those of you who want to make your own slingshot, I have written and published a pdf manual, plus a band size calculator. Here:
www.slingshotchannel.com/band_...
Good luck!

  • Tremendous video guys! It answers a lot of questions that have built up over the years. Not only clearing up the differences in tapering versus non tapering but the camera showed something else quite clearly that has been debated for years. That is("when does the ball leave the pouch"?)/ Many have thought that the ball leaves before getting to the fork opening-camera clearly shows pouch and ball together till right at throat opening-Excellent job Guys!

  • Hooray for Joerg! Congratulation to you for this honor. You have certainly earned it. I am proud to be a long-time fan and glad to see this day. Good on you, Joerg! Leaving this post here as unable to post on The Sling-shot Channel for some error of sorts. --- for those wondering what this is about, Joerg is now a 'partner'.

  • @zacharylisle These bands are nowhere near the top bands we use, those are target bands for Tobias (and me, when my hand is OK again).

  • I think the explanation is actually behind the weight of the rubber itself. The rubber near the fork needs to also move the rest of the rubber, while the rubber near the pouch needs only move the pouch. Thus, it is normal that the rubber near the fork needs to be stronger/thicker in order to contract at the same speed. Rubber is a relatively heavy material so this obviously matters. This is why tapered bands give more performance. :-)

  • Most excellent! Do you buy the bands tapered or do you trim them yourself? If you cut them yourself, then how do you do it evenly and consistently? Latex isn't difficult to cut, but it does want to stretch and creep while you are cutting it.

  • @vv2304 Tapered bands for the cannon would be expensive and also hard to do (the bands are long). Instead of rollers, we can simply increase the barrel length, which may happen.

  • Great video. It makes sense since tapered bands have less mass at the pouch and should be able to accelerate faster. It would be interesting to see how much weigh you've reduced by tapering and do some math. A ratio of band length to weight would definately be better with tapered bands.

  • Joerg, one thing I've meant to ask for some time: How did you arrive at the figures for band width in your calculator? How did you determine the band width for particular weights of the shot? I can understand length, but not how you determined both fork width and pouch width. I must admit, I do follow your guidelines, but I wonder how they originated and if I should even bother to experiment with them.

  • i thought of something wile watching this video. you know how rifles are very accurate by spinning the projectile, well im wondering if there would be some way to get the projectile spinning from a slingshot... maybe a slingshot rifle with a rotating fork or something. like you load it like your other slingshot rifles but after its loaded you rotate the fork around a few times then when its released the bands rotate to line up with the forks making the projectile rotate and maybe more accurate.

  • @JoergSprave Since you are the most experienced shooter I know and I trust your inventive and smart mind, I am comfortable with your figures and how you arrived at them. Now the only thing I wonder about is if multiple bands would outperform a single band if the total width of the multiple bands collectively match the width of the single band. Using your ratio to measure the pouch and fork difference, multiple bands with very narrow tapered pouch widths might be faster, if strong enough?

  • Is there a way to remove the ripples? Maybe if the forks become wider at the same moment that the ripples start it could provide more tension and remove the ripples. If there was a handle grip that you could squeeze at the exact right moment that would somehow widen the forks.

  • Guys, please remember what we learned in primary school! Acceleration is made by force. Stronger rubber makes bigger acceleration. If you compare parallel and tapered bands wit same pulling force, then you will get very similar speeds.

    @SandorFule@SandorFule2 жыл бұрын
    • Wrong. The maximum retraction speed of tapered bands is much higher and also the efficiency increases, so at the same draw weight and using the same projectiles, tapered bands WILL get you more speed. The disadvantage is that the bands tear earlier.

      @Slingshotchannel@Slingshotchannel2 жыл бұрын
    • Could youprovide us exact data please? A simple xls table with 2 columns: the force of the parallel and tapered band at 10, 20, 30....100% of draw length? Easy test, only a fishers' scale is required.
