EDIT: Since so many people keep commenting on it, let me just say that I know Raph's main weapon is the sai. I WASN'T calling his main weapon a kunai, I was calling the weapon he had strapped to his thigh that Karai uses to jab into his head a kunai. Though I did get that one wrong, it's actually a katar. It's heartbreaking to think that Mikey went on a vendetta mission to avenge his loved ones and never cracked another joke. I'm so used to him being the jokester of the brothers.
It's always sad when the comic relief of any team loses hope and their spirit is broken.

Although sad, it’s also fitting towards his character as a whole, since it has been stated in various media that among the four turtles, Michelangelo is the one with the most sheer talent but is held back with how care free and laid back he is, ending up being this serious and being the final turtle helps to bring this into light. Plus the Nunchaku are the most difficult and dangerous weapons to wield and train with, seeing as one can easily injure themselves if not handled well enough.

Not gonna lie I'd probably cry alot if this movie was made. The TMNT were my childhood heroes and still are.
Growing up with the TMNT to see them die heroic deaths. I don't know any who loves the turtles wouldnt cry at this.

This would make for a very great and heartfelt movie if they do it right. Perhaps they would need to make several parts to this in order to make it right I don’t think putting everything in to one movie will do it justice.

Wow. If you showed this to me while I was a child, it would have been utterly devastating, but right now it makes sense. As Tony said in Endgame, "part of the journey is the end". It's easy to overlook the fact that they were Ninja's, they lived a warrior's life, and they died a warrior's death. You live, you die, you fight as brothers! "Cowabunga!!!!!"

A serious Mikey is what I always wanted to see, when he drops the jokes and goes serious he's the most skilled I know they explore this more in the comics, but in shows and movies would be great.
I like how he still had some humor in him. Such as when he’s training Casey. It shows theres still a bit of him in there, although easily overshadowed by his serious personality.

This kind of reminds me of something from the 2003 animated show. I can't remember what episode, but Master Splinter once stated that Mikey is the most physically gifted of the turtles. And if he were to seriously train and focus on his ninja training like Leo than tv, video games, and comic books, he'd potentially be the strongest out of the four.

I kinda hate these stories of killing our famed characters but i get the idea that the story has to see an ending at some point. I always thought a story like this would have Raphael being the last survivor so its very interesting with it being Mikey. Seeing Mikey serious really changes the tone…like you expect it from Ralph and the others but him…being the last and no longer with the wisecracks is like whoa…its serious.
Him dying first would have an equally devastating but a different effect. Like, the most wholesome, "little brother" character gets killed you know it's a downfall from there. It's a reality check, like someone said "Alright, jokes over."
Meh…Mikey dying first would’ve been terrible in my opinion, I mean that would’ve been easily expected. Surprise me. This was the perfect unexpected scenario. This allows his growth to be seen and his relentlessness to be explored. We’ve seen that with the others already.
Mikey has always been shown to be the most naturally skilled of the four since he can much easily use all the other turtles weapons and officially beat Raph once in the Battle Nexus Tournament. He's just the one that doesn't take the training as serious as the others do.

Agreed. Look up "TMNT: The Last Ronin Animation", it's by a KZheadr called "speedokaggen". It's a 4 minute Last Ronin fan film, but it's so good. I'd love to see something like that made into a feature lenght.

Satisfying to know that in comics and graphic novels, the Turtles actually killed their opponents and not just knocked them out or use their weapons for parkour. Damn, so this is how it ends for everyone huh?

There is a new breed of turtles that Casey Jr raised they don't like like the original turtles they have different looks not the same breed of turtles.
The Cross over with the Power Rangers can have it's dark moments. The Ranger X Universe is a Wasteland and Krang has his own Megazord.
Ralph killed foot soldiers, elite members etc by himself... by far strongest willed turtle there is.. can't feel nothing but death..real warrior... not leader, warrior..

Long time turtle fan, first time TMNT comic reader. But after reading this one, I've FINALLY returned to the original comics. Thanks for the recap!
The original run was fantastic (minus the guest era stuff).
I also thought the last ronin was shit, and couldn’t get past the second issue; not only was it completely unrelated to the mirage comics (which is what was promised) but I also thought the deaths were meaningless and contrived, i.e. they had to happen to give Mikey a reason the ruin his whole character; leo’s ending in particular was disrespectful in my opinion. I also thought the villain was contrived and also shit, i thought the world was built sort of primitively, and the new character Casey and April’s daughter was completely generic and unnecessary since Shadow, a much more layered character exists already (re:Mirage Turtles) the art was alright, if all over the place. Meh. I actually thought, though the ,ore obvious choice, that Leo or Raph would hve been better options as to the last ronin. Even Don; in none of these cases, surviving the death of everyone breaks their character. Leo becomes more stoic, if a little angry. Raph goes berserk (hell the healing power they gave mikey even goes better with raph’s fighting style and ethos; it would play out like an old man logan) even don woukd be better off, since he’d probably be forced to take fighting seriously, and face his own cowardice. As it is what we got is mikey as a bootleg leonardo. 💩💩💩🚽🚽🚽🧻🧻🧻
Growing having TMNT being a small part of my life, I never knew that there were darker stories. As many of the fans were older, it would be great if someone would take the lead on this and create a deep, darker tone TMNT movie
I grew up with the OG cartoons and video games. I also didn't realize how darker the comics were until later. I'm currently doing a readthrough of every single issue from the original run and there's some messed up stuff in there (people ODing on drugs, the turtles driving a man to suicide, decapitations and limb dismemberment, for example), pretty crazy stuff. Love it. I'd love an animated movie with a more grittier tone.
in my opinion as far as seeing the turtles on tv or movies, the original TMNT movie that came out in 1990 is as dark and comic like as we are going to get. and even when filming they wanted it darker and closer to the comics but by that time 'turtle fever' was in full swing from the cartoon and they had to pull back a lot of stuff.
@@AkumaMitsurugi Welp, I'm someone Who was born on 2005, and thanks to my father mostly I've been able to see Many stuff from 1970-2000 since I was a kid. I even carried that exact movie from TMNT 1990 when I was 7 on my class for everyone to watch. Welp, I think not innocent childhood are more fun, I guess (adding gaming and stuff) Last thing I Saw about TMNT before 2020 were the movies. Right at 2020 I found out about this cómic and waited It to come out and readed chapter to chapter. I seriously LOVE this kind of stories and also Hope they make a movie out of It, It would seriously be worth It and this story deserves it

@@andrer3764 For TMNT? Depends on what you want. If you want more action focused stuff, definitely start with the OG series from Mirage. I'd recommend picking up the Trade paperback for Volume 1, cause they tend to focus on just the cannon stuff, (volume 1 had a lot of non-cannon stories told by guest writers/artists, called the Guest Era, that really dragged the series down in my opinion). The trade paperbacks tend to cut out all that filler. If you want more kid friendly stuff, the TMNT Adventures by Archie Comics were pretty entertaining. IDW is also currently doing a run called TMNT Saturday Morning Adventures that basically reads like an episode of the 80s cartoons.
Curiously but the death of each turtle also reflect the death of the virtues in the story of TMNT: Raphael (death of the raw power of rage). Leonardo and Casey Jones (death of leadership and the outside allies that such leadership mustered) Donatello and Splinter (death of wisdom and scientific ingenuity) Michaelangelo (death of the childish spark and free spirit) 🤔🤔. Could it be also a reflection of the virtues that die in a society before it disappears into a memory ? 🤔🤔

i just wish raph wasnt "killed" but instead dies of his injuries. like instead of falling and getting head stabbed he stabs her in the back and as she falls on the ground she looks up in pure fear and raph has a my hero stain like moment where his rage boils brighter then it ever has before.... and then he falls backwards into the river as the blood loss was to much nd the only thing that kept him standing was his pure willpower to get revenge for his father. i also feel mikey should have died by fighting a final enemy who wants him to take the fight seriously, his army defeated and he has lost everything so he wants to make mickey suffer in his final moments, but instead mikey laughs as he finally got his revenge for his family and can die happy. mikey fights telling dumb jokes to anger his opponent and mikey dies truly happy. he can even win the fight but simply give out as he accepts his death with open arms and is ready to see his family once more

I think it would be awesome to to read Splinters journal with Mikeys excerpts in it. It's already mind-blowing that Michelangelo went all stoic when he was the groups cut up.

I love all of them Dying from fights where the odds were against them, It shows that they knew what they were doing and were a force to be messed with, each of them being sort of like a 1 man army

I read this storyline one of the greatest yet darkest moments of the TMNT franchise....very well done from beginning to end....I love the fact it had that heartfelt feeling losing your loved ones and going on a vendetta to avenge them all...didn't expect it coming but glad it was done....great job

You need to read the mini comic within Palladium Games' Road Hogs (from the After the Bomb series). Not only did Raphael survive this fight with Karai, he survived the destruction of the United States via nuclear war! Residing now in what is left of California, Raphael is an elderly (easily beyond the standard livespan of a non-mutated turtle --- perhaps 70+ years old) sensei of small group of post-holocaust ninja mutants who champion the few survivors attempting to reestablish civilization against the infamous, and ever expanding post-apocalyptic motorcycle gang know as the "Road Hogs" , in addition to the villainous. technocratic, fascistic, "Empire of Humanity"... those humans seeking to establish/reclaim an America (if not a world) freed from the mutant scourge that the fallout has created.
That sounds pretty cool. The premise kind of reminds me of the "The Wasteland Warrior" arc from the TMNT 2012 TV series.

Yeah, if this was animated right and story told right with outstanding acting from start to finish, this would be an tear jerking movie or show to watch. Especially at the end when you see them all together in the light. The five bothers and their father all together in peace.
we are getting a game of it. i hope they can refine the story a bit. for example instead of raph being straight up killed what if there is a moment where he just dies of blood loss after killing everyone in the meeting. he stands there dead but his body refusing to fall out of sheer rage and determination to win before finally snuffing out the last embers of the fire in his heart as he falls into the water. he wasnt truely defeated but dies of his mistakes due to his rage and anger. i feel that would not only be cooler but much more fitting as in the story he is defeated because he just wasnt strong enough to survive, but in this retelling he could die because he keeps making stupid mistakes because of his blind rage. as if there could have been a chance he survives if he wasnt so angry. another small detail i would change is mikey. i would love if in the end he defeats the badguys and makes a joke about how proud his family would be if they could see how strong he is now. a true bitter sweet ending to a dark story. the last joke if you will. it would give us a moment of "oh this is the death of mikey" instead of the death of ronin. as mikey only really dies emotionally in the story. he becomes someone else. he isnt himself. and i think they all deserve at least 1 final moment where they all are true to themselves and that being the thing that does them in. like maybe mikey gets that final boss fight moment but he knows he has already won and he doesnt care about living anymore so he takes this fight to finally stop brooding over the past, he makes lots of jokes in classic mikey fashion and refuses to take it seriously and this angers his opponent. and mikey gets the last laugh as he dies true to himself and gets to reunite with his family once more. basically i want raph to die due to his anger, donnie to die to his overthinking, leo to die for his unyielding loyalty to his family, and mikey to die for his lack of seriousness. it would just be so euphoric to see mikey get a moment to feel true joy in the end because his whole life he was an unstoppable force of joy in the team, raph was an unstoppable force of rage and power, leo was a force of true loyalty and leadership, and donnie was always looking 5 steps ahead. there deaths should reflect that and stay true to there charaters. like yea raph dies and is stopped but he died going out giving everything he had and being 100% himself to the very end. yea leo dies and is stopped but he dies being truely loyal to his family. yea mikey dies but he dies truly happy
I once saw someone's comment about this which basically said that after he finally grow up and take the mantle of his fallen brothers as the last survivor, in a way, THE "mikey" that we know and love, the one and only with the goof personality, cracks jokes and be a wise ass, also dies with them. Leaving only "the last ronin" which is out for revenge I've never felt the same after reading that...

What's crazy is splinter always told the turtles together they were unbeatable, and it's obvious in their deaths, because in each scene if all 4 were there they would have been able to defeat each foe...

I will not lie, this is one of those times when turning a series known for being pretty lighthearted and fun into being gritty and dark (partly due to the tone of the original comic) was actually really good. Like it didn't really feel as edgy as i thought it would be, it honestly feels like a fitting end to a tale about 4 warrior brothers from a warrior clan waging a bloody war against it's enemies, it's like a samurai movie with giant turtles.
A bittersweet emding Mikey finally kills Hiroto, but at the cost of his own life In the tmnt afterlife, they all see each other again

Wow, that was a great way to end the story. I remember reading the graphic novels as a kid and loved the fact that they all wore red masks and actually killed their enemies. I understand why they went the children's route for the cartoon and toys but would have loved a more grimdark animated or live action movie.

I don't like Raphael's death. I mean, not bad, but I feel like they should've emphasized his "berserker rage" much more; shown us the bloodlust in his eyes and anger at the thought of his father, dead. Should've shown more of that rampage. Lastly, I think he should've just died from blood loss and overall battle wounds; no final blow. Kinda should'a had a Rock Lee moment where she has the sai in her back, and she lays there on the ground, shaking, terrified yet angry she can't get up to finish him off, then she notices silence, looks up at Raph's towering body, angry face, his second sai falls to the ground, and she says, "Wait... He's already dead." And while she wants to call him a monster, she can't help but acknowledge and respect the ferocity and determination of the warrior, and just stares in awe until she blacks out. Maybe his second sai falls into the water instead, and his lifeless body soon follows, and we can still get that sick last panel lol
i pray they do this in the upcoming ronin game as i would love to see the sheer rage and frustration in raph at the sight of his fathers death. a burning inferno of unyielding rage that will burn his enemies to dust.
Literally a child’s fan fic this death shows that berserker rage better than some edgy end like that he literally died like benkei arrows from every angle and he didn’t just break her he destroyed her he ensured she wouldn’t hurt his brother and that the foot clan woundnt benefit from her anymore. This raph died in a way fitting he killed everyone at their hq when they arrived they just found bodies and corpses and only one alive her but her mind was gone he had broken the foot clan by himself imagine your a foot clan and you see everyone gone a lone turtles body surrounded by the viscera of your Allie’s and your boss is all that’s left a broken corpse that is a message you made a big mistake. If one could do this what are the other three doing?

I didn't even read this and watching the video damn near made me cry. When a story can make you do that, it's a damn good story.
The plot twist that would have angered everyone is if all four brothers died and the last ronin was Venus coming back to avenge her brothers.
Venus isn't stupid enough to get herself killed in a su!cide mission for vengeance😔

Man this was a crazy video. I'm at least pleased that they went out as true warriors. No fear! This proves to be a tragic story, but also an inspiring one. It's crazy that, although there is no detail, that all the other mutants were hunted and killed. Out of all the mutants, I would've at least wanted to see how Usagi Yojimbo and Venus de Milo lost their lives.

Great comic book series. One of the best comics I’ve read and I’m an OG comic book fan. The actual full comic book cover art is very valuable.
What I liked about Last Ronin the most was how all of 'em died by the Foot, thus closing the revenge cycle. It all started when Yoshi and Oroku Nagi had a standoff, then Yoshi (arguably) started it by killing Nagi, then Shredder killed Yoshi for revenge, and it could have been the end of it, but instead Turltes were trained to avenge Yoshi as well. They weren't necessarily the good guys either at the start. And that's what I loved about the story. That in the end - because none of them (team Turtles or Foot) were the good guys per-se - none of them get the happy ending. Instead they all got destroyed by the cycle of never ending revenge that ended up killing all of them in the end. But at least with Mikey and Hiroto going out together it also closed the cycle as well. There's no-one left to avenge, nor is there no-one left to do that either. ...Aaaaaaaaat least 'till we see how the Lost Years wraps things up with the stuff it's going for, but still.. For a while we had an ending to the sage at least.
Our own adult life is brutal in a lot of ways, and our future is looking bleaker than our past. This story speaks to that. It also touches on the futility, nihilism, and almost banality of war & mar tyrd0m. The Turtles get taken down in either cheap shots, nerfs, or in surprisingly easy ways.

You know what's funny? I remember reading The Last Ronin, but I don't remember reading the part that shows how the Turtles died. Odd. This video was very helpful
Leo and Raph probably have the easiest and quickest deaths. Raph was probably in more pain from all of the damage he took but Leo’s death from the explosion was probably very quick. Donatello however and Splinter definitely had it the worst like goddamn lol a hail of arrows is a bad way to go.
Yeah, becoming a turtle pincushion does not sound like fun. I rather go out in an explosion than get Hero'd like Donnie did.

Raph had it worst. He was repeatedly impaled and shot by arrows by the foot yet fought through and still solo’s them all. Then he stabs Karai but gets stabbed in the head in return and dies. What a tank.

This could easily be a four movie series But it also shows me how we take the greats for granted I would’ve never thought the turtles would have a story where they’re killed my appreciation went up for sure

Dude this is so sad like i almost started crying 3 times while watching this video, i only remember the ninja turtles from some animated show and an arcade game i used to play when i was like 5 maybe, i never thought i the ninja turtles could be so brutal i guess
Great video, loved the turtles since a kid haven’t really kept up with the comics…interesting how much time has passed in this particular timeline. You mentioned Shredders grandson. Are all the comics this far ahead in time or is this just one particular series/retelling of events?
This series was basically a future spinoff of based off original Mirage run. Think of this kind of like the Turtle's version of Marvel's Old Man Logan.

Never thought to see my childhood cartoon die, I'm a grown ass man now but it's sad to see them go like that!!
Honestly can't even be mad how they all faced heroic ends and I think it was written beautifully, but I think there was a missed opportunity to make Leo the last one standing. I just think it would've been a poetic end having the eldest brother whose entire consistent purpose throughout every series (except the new rottmnt) was to protect his little brothers. That could just be my angsty side talking tho lol. Still I see why they made Mikey last, belived as he is, but even if they put Leo first I think I would've liked it more. Either way it's still sad but nice they've been put to rest.
I think they mainly did it as Mikey was ALWAYS the most talented brother of the group, he just never applied himself fully as he had his brothers. But when they were all taken away he had to actually live up to his talent to get revenge hence even his mood change. It made him have to get serious finally.
That's exactly what he did. Protect his little brother.
Leo is my fav, but I actually like that Mikey became the last ronin. This could be an awesome live action movie using cgi versions of 1990s turtles. The flashback sequences could be amazing!

Does anyone remember that one sequel season Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward? The comic book version of their futures is a gritty far cry from that series.
The cartoon series of TMNT had a sick theme song it is very sad to see this video but thanks for the info R.I.P Evryone who died in this and also Leornados Katana While He Died was Awsome
Yeah this would be a very dark, but very touching movie to make for the people who grew up with 1980s/1990s/2000s cartoon versions as well as the live action 90s movies because all of us are adults now who can deal with more brutality and more realistic circumstances the turtles would do with their weapons as well as their enemies. Not to mention, the fact that we get see the dramatic transformation of Michelangelo from being the most light-hearted/easy-going turtle to this dark, mentally troubled, but badass fighter he is in this cartoon would be a very good way to make it different from all other TMNT movies and TV shows.

Just found out about The Last Ronin comic from my local newspaper comic review and I was saddened by the news even though I haven't read the series yet. Then I came across a beautifully 3d rendered short animation and hits the feels. The TMNT has been my number one hero team out of just about every hero team you can think of.
The fan short was pretty dang good. The Last Ronin is also getting a video game adaptation.

I grew up on TMNT. From the TV shows to the games. Great video but truthfully it was sad and depressing af.
Never knew that tnmnt showed so much blood, honor and sadness. This is a good video to show another side of the turtles. Somebody should make a movie of this.
