Vicious cycles in training are common; you work your butt off, make some progress, maybe get hurt or burn out, then double down with even more effort, and the cycle repeats. Before you know it, you are putting in more effort, trying harder than ever, but gains are coming slower and slower. I experienced this from probably the ages of 25 to 29 or so, and I was chasing numbers on barbell lifts that I thought would confer the adaptions I wanted (they didn't but that's another story). I was so enthusiastic about achieving my goal that in put in maximal effort, repeatedly, with very slow progress. It finally occurred to me that effort wasn't the problem, but the application of it. Taking a step back, and being smarter with how I applied my effort, allowed me to actually get in better shape with LESS effort, as I was more efficient with my training and injured way less.
