Boris Johnson defends plans for teachers to decide exam grades - BBC News

The Prime Minister has defended plans for teachers to grade GCSE and A-level pupils in England this summer calling it a "good compromise".
The decision follows last year's exam fiasco when grades were decided by an algorithm.
This year grades will be decided by teachers using mock exams, coursework, essays and optional tests provided by exam boards. With so much time lost, pupils will only be assessed on what they've been taught.
Results will be published earlier in August to allow more time for appeals that are expected to follow.
The announcement follows similar moves in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. But there are concerns about the fairness of the approach, including the risk of grade inflation.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by education editor Branwen Jeffreys.

    • No it's entirely based on evidence collected to support that child's grade. A teacher can't give a pupil a low score without evidence, and since principals must sign off on all grades going to exam boards it risks the school having to deal with parents and children contesting grades and potentially Ofsted knocking on doors. In short it isn't in any teachers interest to give a kid the grade they don't deserve - whether too high or too low.

    • @@darkflighter100 I’ve learnt first hand that this is not the case, the moderation teams are usually quite lazy as they have to do so many and the teachers always account for the relationships no matter how hard they try not to. Students who are more disobedient despite their abilities will get lower grades than they deserve.

  • It’s life that we have to do exams, of course they say they find it better it’s in class and that they get predicted grades, but no one will know there full potential when in that exam on there own to see what they learnt ? Exams are always stressful but it has to be done so you can then give full potential of the high grade they’ve been given

Not to mention the fact that some children haven't even had laptops from which to work. I completely agree that exams would have hypothetically been a better alternative, but I truly don't see how it could have been possible in this situation

  • I went through this last year. Everyone here is forgetting to mention one thing. Grades during the year do not matter towards any real grade which means that students like me don't care enough to work for them. For example in my GCSE my predicted grades by teachers were 4s and 5s for double science and maths. Then I went on to get a double 8 in double science and 8 in Maths. In year 12, I was getting anything from Cs and some Ds during the year and then I got As and Bs and even an A* in the exams that decided my UCAS predicted. Lucky for me my teachers did understand me a bit and gave me grades a bit higher than the ones I had gotten during the year. Still I can't help but think that I would have gotten a B easily instead of a C in physics which would have definitely made it possible for me to go to the University I wanted. Unfortunately I couldn't.
