The Inside Story of the Ship That Broke Global Trade

The six-day stranding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal last March did something incredibly rare: it made regular people care about shipping, the means by which more than 80% of the world’s goods are transported. It took only one wrong turn for the container ship to bring a critical trading artery to a standstill. This is how a $1 billion worth of cargo got stuck, freed and impounded as the courts took over.

  • As a captain who crossed that waterways many times can honestly say there is a very thin line between safe passage and disasters like this one. If the canal authority puts a legal force that forbids the passage of huge vessels at certain wind force will be relaxing for the captains and pilots but companies will not accept it due to excessive waiting time. Can you blame the captain ? can you blame pilots ? The industry demands swift transaction but nobody takes the responsibility. This is the problem only captains face with. If you decide to wait , company will ask why are you waiting when others proceed. Many others may proceed without problems but one mistake is enough for a disaster. You can not justify yourself unless it is proven by an accident.

  • "No gifts" I was in the Navy, we traveled through the Suez at least 10 times. All pilots asked for cigarettes, ships ballcaps. We had to setup coffee, muffins - pretty much all sorts of treats. Even saw and heard the driver on the tug screaming: "Gimme Hat". And throughout entire canal voyage there quite a "few" pilots that board the ship.

  • The Suez Canal pilots are regular beggars, asking mostly for cigarettes, but not one carton, they are very displeased if they only get one carton, the worst part is that no matter how many cartons you give them they continue to hassle the captain for more. I know because I have gone thru the canal many times as ship´s captain; in one occasion I was actually force to take myself to the opposite side of the bridge in order for the pilot to leave me alone. The Egyptians are notoriously avers to admitting fault, so it is not estrange that they deny reports of the shameful behaviour of their pilots, but every captain that has transited the canal knows all too well it is very true.

    • I call BS on the theory that the bernoulli effect could be large enough to contribute to this failure. Sure, it is a quadratic relationship to speed, but the ship was operating in a storm and the wind load, erratic as it is, should have a much larger and chaotic effect than the gradual change in pressure differential between the two sides of the ship, due to increasing the speed. The bernoulli equation is not even relevant in most practical flows, and I would be very sceptical that it holds up in the canal under these conditions.

I looked up the Suez canal authority rules and it states the pilots don't take over the helm. • I traveled through the Suez Canal at least 20 times, and 60% of the pilots are useless except for begging for gifts. I can't agree. The captain, who speaks for the shipowner, is the only one with responsibility; the pilot serves merely as his or her advisor. In other words, the captain's actions have the same legal weight as those taken by the shipowner or firm. It is the captain's fault in this specific instance. That big loaded ship already had a minimum of bottom clearance, so he should first wait for better weather. He had to decline the pilot's request to increase the speed because higher speeds cause the ship's stern to sink further and steering to become more challenging. It appears that the captain or pilots were unable to maneuver the ship in the severe wind. Human errors due to lack of experience always cause panic, which results in disaster. The captain, who always agrees with company directives, was excellent until something went wrong, just like what happened with the Costa Concordia.

Second decrease there profit little bit try get more sales in local// international business because price is lower than buyer like to buy more and because of that they will get 20% to 30% more profit. And this solve their 40% problem but all companies who create that problem at list pay 70% of loan amount and then they need to build houses for people who bought from them. • Warren is an inspiration for many investors, but the times of opportunity are different today than they were back then. However, the principle of compounding remains the same. Money typically only starts compounding into big numbers, when big numbers are added to the formula as a basis. Compounding your way up to $100 starting with $1.00 without contributions may take a while. However inputs of experience, both positive and negative can sometimes yield numbers far greater and faster, than contributions to the currency itself. Also the compounding of time can result in a number of byproducts, reputation growth where people want to trade with you, or the reverse. Your body also, live on a steady diet of cigarettes and hard liquor, and your Ferrari is ready for the scrap heap by the time you're 30. Anyway what Warren was able to achieve is incredible, however I'm sure there was a ton that built his and others fortune that isn't typically mentioned other than those ready to hand over their money.

Check out the ones that run from her near Asia, then look into what the military is up to with their island building down there. Why do they feel they need such a huge military presence in an area where nothing happens except for giant shipping barges floating by?

  • Suez canal authority is a joke. By personal experience, on an average you need to keep following number of cigarettes aside for Suez passage 5 cartons for the boarding agent, 2 for suez canal inspector, 3 for suez canal quarantine, 2 for suez crew and suez electrician, 2 for harbour pilot, 3 for first canal pilot, 3 for second canal pilot. Beware that those are the minimum numbers that will upset the pilot as he expects more and start a drama in order to get more cigarettes, some kg of cheese, some liters of milk and olive oil. In 10 years of passing the Suez Canal only recently one young suez canal inspector refused gifts. That gives hopes for the future.

When transit start, Electrician, Boatman and First Pilot board the vessel, they also asked for gifts. Second Pilot and Third Pilot also asked for gifts. Gifts include Cigarettes, Groceries, Things and Money if found some expired book or chart. Also, Suez Canal has the expensive AVCS Permit about $25 for 3 months and required paper charts even you are already Full Ecdis. I told to myself, they feed their family by working unfairly.

    • @@jasoncarto Sigh... Why do you people show up in every discussion? Clearly this is not the case because, as others have pointed out, English is the universal language of aviation. Here the issue is more likely that all of the pilots are from one country, unlike aviation where plane pilots from everywhere have to talk to ground crew from everywhere. If anything I'd imagine it has more to do with nationalism than political correctness. This is our canal, speak our language.

    • @@deanroddey2881 This is the world. Speak the world's international language. It doesn't matter that "all of the pilots are from one country". They are there to give orders and advice to the ship's helmsman -- and it's unlikely the helmsmen speak Arabic. Do you really think it FEASIBLE for every ship to have an Arabic translator???? Oh, and by the way "our Canal"; the French built it. Britain seized it as a prize of war with the French (Napoleon Bonaparte) who had previously conquered Egypt. British ran it fine with no problems, made many improvements. Egypt seized the canal from British during Egyptian independence. So, twice a prize of war. Doesn't make it your baby.

    • @@veramae4098 I wasn't saying it was the CORRECT thing to do, I was just pointing out that the 'everyone is a special snowflake' stupidity that gets thrown out in every conversation by Fox News acolytes is likely absolutely nothing to do with the situation. Whatever happened in the past, it belongs to Egypt now. Yes, they should adapt to the norms of the shipping industry the canal serves, but the fact that they don't has nothing to do with political correctness. If anything it probably has more to do with the conservative standpoint of nationalism.
