All we were taught in school was "there was a colony on Roanoke here, and John White left for 3 years, came back, it's gone and Croatoan is on a tree" We got no context to the Croatoan islands, and when I was in school, all the information discussed in the video was available, so why didnt we learn it and were just told it's a mystery?

  • The Sir Walter Raleigh thing was very interesting and way more complicated than it initially seems. First during Elizabeth’s reign: He fought in Ireland against the Desmond rebellion and he was rewarded a load of land. He couldn’t find many people to go there and he wasn’t good at managing. Then he went to Roanoke and did the colonies. They failed. Raleigh became popular with the queen, despite the failed colonisations. Although, the failed colonies were seen negatively, due to the loss of resources and the fact that they failed. He became an MP and chief of the yeomen of the guard too. Then it was discovered that Raleigh had been secretly married to one of Elizabeth’s ladies in waiting. This was a big no no, since the marriage was unauthorised, it was against the lady-in-waiting’s duty and it undermined Elizabeth’s influence. They were thrown in the Tower of London (a more extravagant, less diseased prison for nobility). He was however released in 1592 to attack the Spanish coast and got lucky, capturing a key trading ship and very large amounts of gold; however, some was lost. Then in 1594, after being released again, he went to find El Dorado, that’s right, golden city!.. He failed. He came back with little to show for the large investment and was looked down upon. He did right a book that claimed he discovered some cool stuff, but he probably just lied. He managed to sustain his position and regain favour of the Queen, by being part of the famous raid on Cadiz and defending against the third armada. During James I’s reign: However, Raleigh’s luck was running out. In 1603 the queen died and he was implicated in a plot to bring money into England to promote sedition that same year. He was charged and convicted with treason, sentenced for death, but wasn’t executed for it. Why? Because he’d never actually faced the person accusing him in court. The guy was probably exaggerating his involvement to try and get off the hook a bit (which he did). James I realised there was no real evidence, but he was still imprisoned in the tower for 13 years. Raleigh was then pardoned and given permission to go to South America. Why? You guessed it! To look for El Dorado… again…. During his stay there he attacked a Spanish outpost/ town and his son died. Big embarrassment because they didn’t even get much. The Spanish king demanded that the treason charge was renewed and for him to be executed. He was executed in 1618.

Also everytime I hear about the story it's always about how John White had no idea what could've happened and didn't know about Croatoan being a nearby tribe and just went "ghosts must've dun it". Also I like to imagine that someone started to chisel "Cro" into a tree and then either realising that the word was too long for the tree, or someone else was like "no don't write it there, write it on this post here" and they had to start all over.

  • I agree with that conclusion. The colony were short on supplies and sought out more inhabitable land. I think the majority of the colony went to Site X, while a small band of men left the engraved Croatoan message. I believe they purposely ravaged the Roanoke colony and left a subtle message in an effort to not bring unwanted attention to the colonies survival from potential future Spanish scouts. The engraved message would be understood by John White and lead him to the ‘small band of men on Croatoan’. They alone held the new secret location of the colony, now known as Site X. If the Spanish scouts found these brave men first on this exposed outer island, then they would’ve died with the secret.

It's surprisingly common- like how in the typical poem "roses are red, violets are blue" The color of violets wasn't specifically named at the time of writing, so they just went with blue.

    • It was pretty standard procedure during the colonial era for all empires and kingdoms of the time. A lightly armed expeditionary fleet would be sent to survey an area and establish a colony, and if applicable, reach out to the local natives to understand intent (ie are they hostile or not) and potentially establish trade, as colonists would virtually always be low on supply and force. Over time as the colony would develop, natives would be established as more permanent allies if they were useful to the colony (manpower concerns, as allies against other hostile natives, etc), displaced from their territory (especially if gold and other rare resources were involved) or exterminated if relations were especially bad and colony supervisors deemed the natives to be an especially high threat to the colony. I'm sure you can imagine how silly it would be for the brits and spaniards and whatnot to have a default policy of extermination and immediate hostile stance towards natives considering the astronomical costs involved in even establishing a colony, the enormous risks and massive disadvantage the expeditionary fleet crews had embarking across a big fuck off ocean into an unknown land settled by native populations with hundreds of years of survival experience and knowledge of the surrounding land lol.

    • You don't need the anchor for sailing, you need it for anchoring. If you try to park your ship in a narrow strait while people go ashore, chances are the winds will pull the ship onto a reef and damage it. This is not as much of a problem when docking in a port, where you don't use the anchor.

It was a really good option for students who have great difficulty writing standard 60-page research papers, and the point of the assignment is still achieved. It would be great if similar options could be applied to public schools here in the U.S. Kids might actually try.

  • After watching the 'History' Special 'Roanoke: Search for the Lost Colony' (you have to pay for it now 😕), where they reanalyze the First Dare Stone, I became convinced of its validity. A modern expert in Elizabethan English, pointed out obscurities which could not have been known in the 1930’s. Anyway, if you haven’t seen it, I would definitely check it out, it’s well worth the $4. But my disagreement with you on that particular point notwithstanding, it was so incredibly refreshing to hear someone tell the tale of the Lost Colony, as not happening in a vacuum. The 1585 Ralph Lane Expedition, and especially how it ended, is so vital in putting the colonist’s disappearance into context. It shows us how that expedition had already left an extremely bad taste in the mouth of the Indians towards the English, long before the John White-Roanoke Expedition had ever left England. For my part, it definitively points to the slaughter of the colonists, as being the most logical and common sense explanation of the mystery. It also reinforces my view on the First Dare Stone’s veracity, as the picture it’s narrative paints falls in line with that conclusion.
