I thought I'd talk about what went into the development over the past year of my main robot, Shrapnel.
Shrapnel is a horizontal spinner Antweight (150g) combat robot.
Please have a look at Shrapnel's build video for links to parts and it's Thingiverse listing.

3:33 someone on the right was *really* enjoying the battle
HAHA THAT GUY IS REALLY REALLY ENJOYING IT
That battle was intense for sure.....
I love how you went through all the stages of trial and error and how you fixed it and came to your current build. Really good video mate.
Great video
i love all of the previous shrapnels on the right. I love your work. What's the average cost of shrapnel (filament, electronics, bar, etc.)?
Can't believe you don't have 1M subs. I actually watched one of the battles with him on youtube, and then saw this video. Love the video.
Black Cat 1598 glad you liked the video but what do you mean by 1M subs? Sorry, that doesn't ring a bell

Great video. Just returned from my second competition, and my first as a competitor in our "Antweight" division (1lb US). Ended with a 1-2 record so wasn't completely disappointed. The main thing I learned was driving ability was a much bigger factor then I would have imagined.
CaptainXJ I agree with that a lot. You can have an brilliantly engineered robot but if you can't drive it, you're gonna have a hard time.
Adelaide Robot Combat Is there a buy link for the bar or was it machined again?
CaptainXJ I mentioned in the video that it was machined
Adelaide Robot Combat Ok I couldn't hear it and if you can't upload earlier versions then make them and then upload them. Also what is the combined weight of all the shrapnel variations with the electronics and stuff?
Adelaide Robot Combat By I couldn't hear I meant for the "new" version.
It's like a mini tombstone
Shrapnel is my second favorite robot of all time.
That's good! What's the first?
carbide. is it ok if i make a cardboard model of Shrapnel?
WhiteEnderDragon zitu that's okay
Awesome is that the 11.2 version that the latest?
I've got all the electric and body built I think it's all thie parts you got but having a lot of trouble getting it to fit all together
Might I recommend beefing up his weapon wounts with betalic washers?
Im not even saying this coz shrapnel is a horizontal spinner, but it literally looks exactly like tombstone
I went up against this very design at an event in Hickory, NC. It's not bad, but you have to watch out for vertical spinners. One solid hit to the weapon mounts basically totals the frame.
That's cool! Would you have a video link? I'd love to see it in action! And I agree, the weapon mounts wrecked very easily (from verticals or self inflicted). That's why I went for a new version with laser cut Acetal panels instead. kzhead.info/sun/hbycYah8gnWwloE/bejne.html
kzhead.info/sun/adV6qrCNkJNrZX0/bejne.html Unfortunately I was having drive issues in this match, and additionally my receiver's antenna was damaged near the end of the match so I actually ended up losing what would have otherwise been an easy win. However, you can see when my robot managed to slice right through Slamhound's frame. Now, one interesting thing that Team WaitForIt did was reinforce Slamhound's frame with thin steel rods. When my robot broke Slamhound's frame, it actually popped the rod out of the PLA. A less powerful or less optimized vertical spinner might have tossed Slamhound rather than cutting through entirely. The 150g class is somewhat small in the US, but we end up seeing a lot of unique designs due to not having size limits. One team even had an all-plastic drum spinner with a model of Squirt from Finding Nemo on top that probably measured more than 4" in height.
Very cool! Cheers!
a very mini tombstone
Have you tried an Endbots DESC?
i want to make it but a little bigger, 33lbs, any tip ?
could it possible to use Shrapnel as a remote controlled lawn mower?
Dein Gott Haha! I doubt it. Maybe a big version...
I am making my own spinner antweight and so far all my components total to 109g without the bar or chassis, so I'm concerned about weight as I move forwards. I've already downsized the wires to cut a few grams off and am considering resizing some boards, but I don't really know how heavy the chassis is going to be. How many grams is shrapnel's bar or chassis, and what options do you suggest for lightweight yet effective chassis or spinners? Thanks
Clyde Johnson Shrapnel's chassis was 30 grams and his weapon bar was originally 20 grams but the final bar in this video was 30 grams. I managed to loose enough weight for this by using a micro aircraft receiver and a dual brushed esc for the drive. I also used a 180mAh battery which saved weight too.
Thanks for the prompt reply! The battery mAh change is a good idea too. I switched to running two 1S 200mAh lipos in series, which freed up 4g! I bought two brushed 10A escs for both my drive motors, but I see that a dual brushed would weigh less. Could you link me to where you bought yours? Also, I'm using a standard 8ch quadrotor receiver, I took off the case to cut it down to 8g. Would buying a micro plane rx instead cut the weight down a lot more or should I just stick with the 8g 8ch rx? Thanks a lot for the help
Clyde Johnson A micro receiver would shed more weight. I used a four channel version. Here's a link for some dual esc's. m.banggood.com/2S6A-Micro-Dual-Bi-Directional-Speed-Controller-for-Tank-Crawler-and-Boat-without-Brake-p-1032413.html?currency=USD&Robert&+&DPA-en-nf-m-p180
Can You pls link the dual esc i cant find it any where!

I just bought one of these for my spinner today. Looks promising.
Can you pls link the dimensions of the weapon blade
Rummy Panesar There's nothing to link. It's 90mm long and made so it has points on it's ends and it is balanced. I simply drew something on the metal and cut it up with a grinder. To ensure it's balanced, I use a propeller balancer from hobbyking.
Hey chris! Im making Shrapnel as a proof of concept for a school project, and i just wanted to ask if The Thingiverse page for shrapnel is updated with the new design?
UB-420 MeMeLoRd No it isn't but this latest version is a personal upgrade. The thingiverse is my previous version. The only difference in stl files is I change the columns slightly to allow a bar that is a little longer. I also haven't included the dual esc that I am currently using but you can find them easily on banggood. Otherwise, the version on thingiverse is the same.
Nice, thanks! if i ever go to Adelaide ill be sure to visit you guys!
UB-420 MeMeLoRd sounds great, good luck!
How heavy is the chassis of shrapnel
Can't give you an exact number because I haven't used this design in a while. From weighing an old damaged chassis, without screws or nylon spacers, the 3D printed parts are approx 20 grams for the top section, and 11 grams for the bottom.
Adelaide Robot Combat ok I was trying to figure out where my weight was too much. It’s probably my battery or weapon esc
You said you used a duel esc for the drive can I get the link

Have to say that seeing Shrapnel has really reinforced my desire to build a proper, competitive antweight, a horizontal bar spinner too. However, lacking access to a 3D printer and such, I will be reliant to use alternative materials. I actually plan to make it reliant on its framework instead of panel armour, specifically using metal from a segment of chain-link fence. The weapon, a 28g Stainless steel dual-side Alan key, will be driven via belt-and pulley, with an independent controller to the drive, scavenged from a broken drone. Power will be a drone LiPo. Does this seem like it could be feasible for construction of anything remotely viable?
I don't see why not as long as it complies with any local rules that you'll have to follow. I'd recommend against using a belt and pulley. You'd waste a lot of weight when you could easily mount the bar directly to your motor. I've been doing that for a while now and I've only had to replace the motor twice in the past year (Shrapnel has seen at least 60 matches in that time).
Adelaide Robot Combat I see, thanks! Which way do you attach the bar to the motor axle to take the impacts, is it welded?
FluffyArcheops if you look the motor up, you'll see that there is four 2mm threaded holes. I use two of these for the bar
Adelaide Robot Combat Oooh, I see, thanks a heap!
can you put up shrapnels new design up for download?
No I wont be sorry. That version was for some personal upgrades.
Vincent LaRosa I've already uploaded a design on thingiverse. As for modifying it, you should be able to import that file and do what you like with it. However I ask that you show recognition for my hard work if you ever put anything about your modified design online. Thank you.
