MADRID, SPAIN - Welcome to Madrid, Spain, home to the oldest continually open restaurant in the world, since 1725. Tonight I’m going with my friends Jeffrey and Hsien to go eat some of their signature dishes, and I can’t wait to share this legendary meal with you right now.
Friends in the video:
Jeffrey Merrihue ( / xtremefoodies_ )
Hsien Tan
Sobrino de Botín or Restaurant Botín (goo.gl/maps/ptRTA3m1diPJ1rmi9) is not only the oldest restaurant in Spain, but the oldest restaurant in the world, operating since 1725. They specialize in Spanish food and particularly roast suckling pig, which they’ve been serving ever since they opened. What’s also amazing is that their stone oven fire is never extinguished, it’s been flaming and never gone out ever since they’ve been open.
We started off our meal with a few sides and beginning dishes, some baby eels - a delicacy in Spain in olive oil, garlic, and a few dried chilies. They were excellent, although very expensive. Next we had a few vegetable based dishes, some beans with jamon and mushrooms topped with olive oil and garlic. After that I had a chance to see in the horno or the oven room the preparation of the suckling pig. It’s roasted for approximately 2 hours, basted with a sauce to increase the crispiness of the skin. The suckling pig is served in a massive clay boat sized tray and typically served onto your own individual plate. The suckling pig is delicious, and I especially enjoyed all that meat broth at the bottom of the pan.
Finally for dessert we had a milk cake and the highlight was a Spanish cheesecake.
Although Sobrino de Botín or Restaurant Botín, being the oldest restaurant in the world is a tourist attraction, they have maintained the quality of their food and I think it was well worth a visit, especially for any food lover, it’s truly a landmark pilgrimage destination.
Total price - €543.89 ($552.46) for 4 adults. The eels were very pricey, everything else was reasonable.

  • Hi Mark, I'm glad you enjoyed one of the wonders of our city, "Sobrino de Botin". I'll tell you something, the restaurant's oven has worked without ever turning off since the place began operating, almost 300 years ago. It's been running for so long that if it were turned off, the stones in the oven would break as they cooled. In fact, during the pandemic lockdown, while the restaurant was closed, an employee came every day, with special permission, to light a fire and keep the oven warm.

  • The wonderful thing about Spanish food is that it can be simple, sophisticated and unpretentious all at once. They appreciate the intrinsic qualities of the produce and meats and don't try and transform it too much. Even the vegetarian food is luscious. They celebrate the terroir and climate and have great table service.

Just stop by where the locals eat and you can have a menu of the day (Menu del dia) for 10 to 15 dollars that will blow your mind. Yes I have been there twice and the people are dead honest. How do I know??? The first time we were there my wife left her purse in the taxi. We were leaving next day and were in a panic. We went to the concierge at our hotel on the Gran Via and told them to call the taxi company and they laughed and said which one we have hundredes, OMG. We were cooked. Ten minutes later we get a call that the cabbie is downstairs with her purse!!! He saw it and immediately came over to our hotel. He would not take any money !!!! We has to literally force a 20 Euro note into his hand. Story two. We were on our way to a cooking class. It seemed to take a bit. We paid the cabbie and he said that he turned off the meter so as not to charge us extra, when he made a wrong turn. GPS problem. What more can i say. They have our hearts. Embrace them like we did.

  • My favourite show yet. Mark, the metal fork isn’t exempt because it can break the eels , I can assure you the wood would be just as damaging but no, the wood is neutral and doesn’t quickly heat up when touching hot foods which could effect taste or texture but also they don’t chemicals react to acidic foods. With a dish this expensive one needs to add all the finer points to accompany the atmosphere and this is why they provide the wooden forks. A palette with extraordinary taste buds might know the difference between the two but in a place like this they can’t take any chances.

    • @@dmac7403 I don't want to sound rude, but how can you say that they didn't miss much as they didn't get the eels? Even if you personally don't like eel, it doesn't mean, that they wouldn't like it. It's a matter of taste and preferences, you know... I don't personally like oysters for example, but I'm not telling anyone, that they don't miss much if they're not ordering them in a restaurant, because who am I to tell, if they would enjoy of them or not.

    • @@micarone Like I said my opinion is they didn't miss anything and out of all of the friends ,high school, college, work, and I was a line cook I've never heard any of them rave over eel or have yet to ever be served it out any of their homes or any cookout I've ever been so I'd say not getting a bite of eel wasn't a travesty or missing out ,also let's think about the comment they didn't order it if it was so good would of been order first not on the wish I'd of Andrew Zimmermaned it since I was in Spain have a nice day clown , we're all aloud to have opinions not just your self ,you do know opinions are like a.h we all have one .

    • @@dmac7403 Well... To be exact, you didn't say "in my opinion" in your original comment. You only said "You didn't miss much". Not "You didn't miss much, in my opinion." Hence the difference... And as far as I can understand, they didn't order the eels just because they were pricey and they were on a budget. Not because they wouldn't been liking them.

    • Surely it must be morally reprehensible and feel wrong to order and indulge in suckling pig to even the most casual of meat eaters. A very young piglet just born into this world, snatched away from its mother while still feeding from her nipples, to be slaughtered for human consumption. Think about that, now change the piglet to a baby...Shame on you Mark! You have no compassion, empathy or morals! 😡

They also prepare a sucking lamb that is also amazing too. We had one order of the pork and lamb. If I remember correctly the baby eels cost around 100 euros 10 years ago. They are so rare and such a delicacy that I’ve seen places make fake eels like they make the fake crabmeat.
