Nate Patrin of Pitchfork Media gave Exmilitary a 7.5, describing the album as a "a bludgeoning slab of hostility" that avoids being an "overbearing mess". Ian Walker of AbsolutePunk.net gave the album an 81% rating, calling it a "perfect example of an album everyone needs to experience for themselves". NME ranked Exmilitary as the 41st best album of 2011.

    • @@yackerist the closest thing I’ve truly experienced to the emotions and adrenaline conveyed by this mix tape was arriving on scene of a gang shooting and we kept finding more and more patients as we searched through the house. The screaming and noise, blood, garbage everywhere, the bodies and smell of gun smoke came back like it was yesterday when I started listening to this shit. I’m sure the 3 scoops of preworkout I’d had at the time assisted in that lmfao.

  • Death Grips is my happy music. For some reason whenever I feel secure and want to protect that feeling from crumbling (which always happens at some point, but it's 'right now I'm okay' that matters), I put on their music. It gives me kind of like a bird's pov on my imperfections, anger, madness and chaos. They all manifest themselves in the music, outside of my brain, and just sing for me. They don't pollute me, and instead free my head. I feel like it takes a lot of braveness and brains to conceive and then realize a project like Death Grips, not only cuz it's so groundbreaking and different, but also because not too many people can openly say or even come up with an idea that they need experimental, deafening, insane, straight up batshit crazy music to make them feel at ease. I was one of those people, and when I found this band, I felt understood without having to say a word. And for that, I thank you good sirs! :}

  • Sounds weird but this album and Bottomless Pit really helped me in a bad time. Just prior to 2020 I'd financially and emotionally exhausted myself trying to make a difficult relationship work, I'd worked hard and followed the rules all my life and was still in a position in which I couldn't even get a voluntary job working for local charities. So by the time lockdown rolled around I was broke, constantly angry and felt trapped 24/7. Then I discovered death grips and was like 'yeah this guy fucking gets it' and helped me power through and provided a warped motivational soundtrack as I slowly got my shit together. Having something that resonated that energy just really helped.

They've made some masterpiece tracks since and the Money Store is an all time great, but it's hard to beat opening on a Charles Manson sample, following it with fucking Guillotine, and not letting off the gas from that second on. The charismatic expression of the man made me watch it at full volume under heavy gunfire and miraculously the fighting ceased slowly until the only sound resonating over battlefield was this song. Everybody came out of their trenches dancing and singing along. We were laughing and hugging each other while this video was playing in the background. I showed an enemy soldier a picture of my wife and child. For exactly 4 minutes and 21 seconds there was no war in Somaliland. After the video ended we all hugged, shook each others hands and crawIed back into the trenches. I just wanted to say thank you!

If you're just listening to it for the sake of just listening to it then you're just admitting to the fact that you have no idea what the fuck your listening to. Were you trying to insult me with your comments? I have been listening to Death Grips since before i even heard of theneedledrop and it was actually through death grips that i was made aware of his channel. Also i don't use reddit or have ever visited its website so what are you saying? "The whole fantano hype train kind of ruined them for me" how ? because more people are listening to them ? the meme culture doesn't bother me because it literally has no impact on the quality of their music. • Been a major fan since middle school, but it's crazy to come back to this album after a few years and hear the influences flowing from it, and the innovation along with it. I can't deny this being their best release. It's like receiving divine bloodlust on a bad acid trip while vibing to Jet Set Radio Future, and in the background one of your homies is watching Toonami. It's just so fucking amazing and it's such a good album. Most innovative rap album of my lifetime.
