Five die crossing the Channel hours after Rwanda bill passes

It's supposed to stop people risking their lives crossing the channel to Britain.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But the threat of being put on a flight to Rwanda didn't stop several more boats attempting the perilous journey across the maritime equivalent of the M25.
Rishi Sunak says the government is acting out of compassion, to stop more tragedies like the one today, but campaigners say deportation to Rwanda is cruel and probably won't work.

We dont have an endless pot of money to help everyone, and we dont have endless resources either, we have to be realistic, we cant help wvery single person. If we are helping peoole it should be the ones who applied for asylum legally and followed the rules, and its incredibly insulting to them seeing people crossing illegally so they can get what they want faster than going down the procedure route. If people cross illegally, they should not be allowed in and should never be allowed in, there are many many people who flee their country and apply legally, they should be the ones to get the help. Also if they want a country to help, it shouldnt matter if it is here or another country, surely they should be grateful for any help they do get, and if they dont like what they are offered they dont have to accept it. But we should not then be obligated to offer something else, they should either take what is on offer, or leave, genuinely desperate people would take whatever they are offered becsuse its better than nothing. Again, we dont have endless space and money.

  • The Rwanda bill is a politically expedient decision that will ultimately harm Britain's economy. Small businesses and the agricultural sector rely on low-cost labour to operate. Numerous studies have shown that migrant workers (such as channel cross) to work in these sectors earn less than £6 per hour, but are content with their wages. Shockingly, 85% of Britons are unaware that these industries depend on such low-paid workers. These businesses cannot compete in the market if they are unable to provide affordable products to consumers, making low-cost labour a crucial element in their survival.

Currently they come over during daylight hours sail into ports and hand themselves over the government then have to house / support them and record / publish their numbers. Now however they will have to sneak over at night vanish into the countryside and support themselves. No numbers will be recorded so illegal immigration will look like its falling as will the cost of housing them. • The UK is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention which clearly states that refugees have the right not to be penalised for being in or entering a country without permission where this is necessary for them to seek and receive asylum. The Convention provides an international definition of the world ‘refugee’, which is a person in another country at risk of persecution in her, his or their own country. It sets out certain basic rights of refugees that are necessary for the enjoyment of asylum. These include the right not to be returned to a place where they are at risk of persecution.

    @LeornianCyng@LeornianCyng17 күн бұрын
    • Those who fail to get asylum, remain refugees and under the protections of the convention. They should be returned to their home country when their country is safe. It makes no mention of a right to return them to the country they crossed in from. That right was created in the EU, via the Dublin Accords.

  • In this whole wider immigration debate, there’s a subtle difference between ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘multiethnicism’. I have a problem with the former if it means each separate cultural group living their own lives parallel and separate from the broad main national culture, which I really only see in a cohort of Muslims. However, I have zero issue with multiethnicism. The colour of your skin bothers me not a jot; it’s only your _ideas_ I care about, and the ideas tend to come into play with ‘multiculturalism’ and separate cultures living side by side. I tend to see only a lack of integration in a cohort of Muslims. I don’t see it in Chinese/Indians/Poles/ etc. Another thing I would say is that I have lived for long stretches in several places around the world and in every single one of these places only 3 things was asked of me: speak the language, pay taxes and don’t break the law. Now, obviously, I wasn’t living in these places permanently, but tbh, that’s all I really ask of those who come here. Most do these things _and_ as they produce generations, these generations tend to meld with the whole. It’s only a rump of Muslims who want none of this.

    @titteryenot4524@titteryenot452417 күн бұрын
    • Actually there are multiple polls that show that most Muslims in the UK are more likely to define themselves as 'British' than the average Brit + the vast, vast majority of British Muslims speak near-native English (whereas most Brits don't speak any second language at all)

    • @@andrewgreen5892 I would generally agree with most of that. However, as a lifelong agnostic, I have very little time for _any_ organised religion. However, the thing that should be said is that I feel zero threat from any organised religion, bar one. If I were a public figure and publicly castigated Jesus, or Moses, or Krishna, or Buddha, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, it’s very likely nothing would happen to me. If I publicly slagged off Muhammad, it’s quite likely there’d be a backlash and I’d be watching my back for the rest of my life. _That’s_ the difference. Just ask Salman Rushdie or the Batley teacher who, btw, didn’t even _criticise_ Muhammad; he just showed a damn picture! Imagine living in a society where certain people are so offended by a cartoon, they threaten death to the person who showed it! If certain people are so ‘offended’ by a cartoon, then it’s time to question the belief, not the cartoon. It seems Islam is so trigger-sensitive it can’t take honest criticism, when it’s just a bunch of manmade ideas like all the rest. Never let _anyone_ tell you it’s ‘racist’ or a ‘hate-crime’ to criticise Islam. Islam is a belief-system held by people of multifarious races. Islam seems to think it’s entitled to a free pass when it comes to scrutiny. If Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Spaghettiism, etc. are subject to criticism, then Islam is too.

If these people are just so desperate and just want to be safe, then they should go to the nearest country that is safe, not continue travelling thousands of miles, they should not be allowed to pick and choose where they go based on what they can get. Also you're forgetting that these people are trying to get in illegally. There is a legal way to claim asylum that MANY people follow, these people however want to jump the queue or decide they don't want to wait in France so they get on the boats knowing they can get hotels instead of tents, there have been many people the news have filmed who actively admit that they could stay in France but don't want to becsyse the UK offers more, but they don't want to stay in tents while they wait in France for a decision on their applications so they get into boats. If these people are expecting other countries to support them, they should not be able to choose where they go, anyone who claims to be desperate would accept any help, not shop around for better deals.
