With some warm spring weather, we were finally able make mortar and stabilize the crumbling vault. Our friend Laura helped us with further building a new dry stone terrace wall, and with clearing out a part of the cantina.
We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

I love how your neighbour shows you his tractor and you all have a chat and a drink and the progress all over is coming on beautifully and Veluto is getting braver and getting used to be around you. The dry wall is coming on and looking great Bertus. Have a lovely week and another lovely video and say hi to Laura she helped a lot.
Watching you with Laura makes me miss my bestie so much. 😭💕
Veluto is getting braver. How lovely.
Bertus looks like he has built dry wall all his life !
if lego counts, yes 😅
Love your films. So gentle. Keep going with your dry stone wall jigsaw puzzle Bertus. What a great friend Laura is and I love the care you take Isis.
So much has gotten done this week…amazing amount of work…💪 Oh….and look who is being so brave…he will rule the house soon enough…🐈⬛
❤️🐈⬛❤️
You bring us such joy… grateful to watch your progress… I fantasize that if my husband and I were younger, we’d do everything you’d do.
I loved seeing Veluto coming into the house! ❤
me too 🐈⬛🥰
Priceless 😊
🐈⬛
I really enjoyed seeing you all making such progress. The crowning moment was seeing Velluto come inside for food. Thank you for sharing your life with us all.❤
I love the way you speak in Dutch and in the middle of the sentence, flaky bits gets tossed in..😊😊
It's our own funky language - dutch + flemish dialect + english and some italian tossed in every once in a while. :-P
I love how the cat distribution system is global 😂 what a lovely addition! I'm glad Veluto chose you two 🤗😻
Thank you for your beautiful videos. You both bring such peace and joy to our world.
❤️
Is it me or every episode is getting more homey this cascina? Not to mention that I love the space you're working at now. Sooo much potential 🥰
it certainly feels like that to us - that it's gradually becoming more homely 😊
I see the cat is getting comfortable being around you. Yay!
Laura is a good friend to have. Well done on another gorgeous vid. Great progress. 🥂
she is! we're celebrating 18 years of friendship this spring ❤️
Definitely one of my favourite channels ❤️
thank you for letting us know ❤️❤️❤️ and thank you for watching!
@@storiesfromthecascina you are most welcome ☺
your days are full and beautiful. thank you for sharing your dream with us.
Beautiful video again, thanks guys
I've been here since the first video (thanks youtube for recommending) and I have to say that your videomaking, editing and overall story telling has improved alot, im saying this as a fan who sees your videos as a break in my everyday life. I also see the new brick in the roof as some symbolic, adding your touch to your place, and your toast "to each new stone" was just beautiful. Thank you!
Thank you!
You have a great friend and what a treasure drove of goodies you have! I am so jealous! I can imagine doing all sorts of things with the sticks (wattle fences), that star shaped block (the base of a table), and all that wood!. We have an old plow we acquired over 50 years ago. It is painted black and sets on our patio as a reminder of days long past.
Thank for one more fine video.
Wonderful. All of it, spring planting, the beautiful buildings being enhanced, the tractor, the stone wall, Velluto.
glad you enjoyed this episode ❤️
@@storiesfromthecascina all the episodes! But I’m enjoying watching spring unfold, as autumn and winter creep in here
You are so incredibly organized and effective, amazing to watch. Little, by little it is all coming together!
glad you see the order in what to us often feels like chaos 😅 there is a plan but more often than not we need to adjust because of the weather, because of deliveries arriving late, etc ☺️
i love these video's they've become a part of my Sunday routine.
What a wonderful way to start my Sunday morning thank you very much from the USA.
Thank you for another fine video! Another busy week for you folks, so nice to have able bodied friends who are willing to help!
Our pleasure!
20:56 That building is beautiful. Veluto is getting comfortable.
So relaxing to watch your progress.
A good work week. Cleaning up the property SO satisfying.
yes it definitely feels great to see space after space clearing up, even though it feels like we've barely scratched the surface at times too 😅
Love the interior of the stone building, what a great space.👍
You are doing a lot of work but a beautiful house is emerging more and more, congratulations 😊👏1082👍
Your doing a GREAT job! Thanks for the video!
Everything is greening up nicely! The sound of the wind, the rustle of the grass...lovely. The ramp is taking shape, as is the old barn. Taking care of the integrity of the structure is paramount to mitigating future problems. Bravo👏 You've got plenty of bees...perfect start to your own apiaries. Your views are amazing! Thankyou for taking us along on this wonderful journey. Cheers to you, Bertus and Laura from Canada 🇨🇦 Hugs to Velluto too🐾❤️
It would be lovely to keep bees in the future!
@@storiesfromthecascina it really would!
The stone wall is looking amazing.👍
I feel so calm when I watch your videos. Thank you
glad to hear that ❤️
@@storiesfromthecascina 🥰🥰
You are a very ambitious couple and your friend was very helpful too. I have learned something new from your video concerning the stinging nettles, they are edible.
Getting in late on this one but wanted to say, great video, and Bertus, awesome rock wall! Glad you had help. Loved the sound of the wind blowing through the grass!
36.52 : I remember that grass as a child, laying in it, cool wind but the sun already gathering strength
33:22 : total boy toy!! Congrats to the owner!
So exciting to see Velluto in your house!! The lilacs are beautiful, I can only imagine they perfume the very air around your farm.
They're my favourite spring perfume!
As always a beautiful video, wonderful spring views, hard work building the wall and cleaning up and on the rest of Velluto, increasingly confident in the house👍🐈⬛❤🍀
I could happily make a home in any of your outbuildings. So beautiful!
I learned later in life about nettles. Earlier in life, they were things that stung my arms as I tried to reach past them to get to the wild raspberries in Augsburg. Who knew? 🙂
I knew them only as the plants that grew by the stream in my grandparents’ garden, the ones that hurt my ankles on my way to eat some raspberries I was supposed to be picking. They grew strawberries and raspberries for sale to neighbours and locals who came every year. Ten cents per pound! I was allowed to do the weighing of the fruit and to take care of the cash box when I was six years old. They also had several trees with transparent apples. They were green with white flesh, kind of like Granny Smith’s but not exactly the same. ~ Memories of a good childhood come rushing back to me. Have a blessed day.
Another beautiful vlog. Thank you. My favourite🫶🏻
thank YOU 🐈⬛🥰
Everything is looking good you guys! Bertis’s stone wall is going to be a stunner and Laura is a ROCK STAR, pun intended😂. Isis - what is that piece that you were dusting off, it kind of looked like a really cool wooden gear?
It certainly is an agricultural tool but we have to do some research to figure out what exactly it was used for :-)
Beautiful stone wall! lovely vlog, thank you!
The wall is a work of art. Lovely video guys 🥰🥰🥰
Love watching your videos, they are always so calming and serene ❤❤❤. Helps me to chill out and relaxing ☺️ 😊😊. Plus you always get a lot done ✅
😊 thank you
Stingers water is also very good as a hair rinse, when cooking it save it and use it , it nourish the hair and give it extra shine😊
Good to know!
Ciao Isis.
Beautiful just so Beautiful peaceful Living !😊
Gorgeous, gorgeous stone buildings!! Fabulous job your doing! :)
Bertus the stone wall is perfect. We had lilac ay my childhood home, white which didn't do well, mauve and a number of deep purple with maroonish centre. Oh the smell. Cats do like to pick their homes then make the people work hard to befriend said cat.😅
we would love to add a few deep purple ones to our lilac collection 🖤
I really like your progress everything that you’re doing is really upgrading very nice within the bounds of the old architecture and uses of the buildings. You look a lot younger without the hat on and I’m sure without the beard you’ll look younger still.
ah well, grey hair is part of life 😉
Great vlog once again and so much achieved. Thanks for sharing.
Another beautiful video of your progress on your workshop and rock wall, and clearing out the cantina. So many interesting artifacts left behind by the last owners.. even a horse trailer??!! amazing! I'm so excited to see Velluto(sp?) getting more and more courageous to come nearer and actually enter your house. I hope you are able to give him lots of cuddles and pets very soon.
Thanks! The horse trailer is the one big thing in the warehouse that we brought ourselves. It was very useful for my previous job (portraying a knight in shows and doing jousts) and then very useful for moving our furniture to our new life! Bertus.
So many wonderful treasures in your outbuildings. I love that old cart! And the wall is just gorgeous!
The old cart is super nice indeed, we hope we can find some time to sneak in a little restoration project for it :-)
Mooie renovatie van de boog en een kei-mooi muurtje...
Every episode i'm worried about your nice hair 😘 and your head ! Amazing workers U2👏 Mona from Israel🌻🌷
You're making such great progress, and finding the coolest things. Love the wheels.
This house is full of treasures :-)
Look forward to seeing Veluto in all your videos.
We'll do our best ;-)
Awesome drone shots!
endroit exceptionnel ¡ beau projet
Thank you for beautiful video
So many interesting things just waiting to be discovered! A treasure chest! The wall is outstanding, way to go! Velluto....is magical! I saw an orb on this video about 7-8 minutes in, when you were first filming him! Yep, he comes with orbs😂 Thank You for sharing this beautiful video ❤️
he comes with orbs 🐈⬛❤️😅
Great video. Love the stonework progress. Thanks for the explanation regarding the vault ceiling. The nettle risotto looks delicious!
you're welcome Alan! thanks for watching :-)
Such a beautifully shot video! You have all really knuckled down to some heavy work this week! How lovely to have friend’s visiting who can add to the memories of building your home. I have lilac in my garden it is such a beautiful scent, quite mesmerising. Sadly it doesn’t last for very long, which seems to make its fleeting perfume all the more precious. I see all that rain you had has indeed made your grass grow at an extraordinary rate! No sooner have you completed mowing than in a day or two it needs another run over with the lawn mower! Love the shot of the wind blowing through the grass, such a romantic image. The sunlight catching the golden tips of the grass. The viewer is transported away from our busy world to a bye gone era where time seems to stand still. The silence is deafening, the sense of peace and tranquility palpable. ❤
the sunlight and wind in the grass is one of our favourite things ❤️ as is the perfume of the lilacs. we're expanding our collection of lilas so hopefully next spring we'll have more of them blooming ❤️
BEST TO YOU
Great job fixing the vault, perhaps you could consider eventually removing that section and adding internal stairs to the upstairs old hay loft. Love the videos.
Hi John! We have another plan for the stairs - the space next to the stable and hay-loft (currently a garage) will become a entrance/hallway with space for a staircase. It's already connected to both spaces by means of bricked-up doors, so easy enough to open up again. But if we didn't have that option, your solution would be a perfect alternative!
@@storiesfromthecascina I have been following you since you started your channel and love all of you content. Like you, my wife and I are starting a new adventure by moving to Italy on May 29th. We will be renting in Tuscany until we decide to purchase and tackle a small renovation. Thank you again for the wonderful videos and inspiration.
aaah that's so exciting! best of luck with embarking on this new adventure ❤️
I love the treasures you found in your gorgeous cantina, that wonderful wooden 3D asterisk, that I'm sure would have had some utilitarian function is beautiful as a sculpture! And (much to my surprise) I love that pair of what looks like 1950s space-age doors too.
Not the biggest fan of the doors but we do like the handles :-P All parts will find a new destination though sooner or later :-)
Hi, great job on the ceiling. It might well go lighter as time goes on, but it looks fine as it is.
yes possibly! it's definitely drying up lighter ☺️
So many cool old tools! Loved that carved out log in a star pattern... wouldn't that make a great round table base, I wonder what that was used for?
I wondered too, once probably part of an antique farm implement, now a beautiful sculpture - love your idea of a table base!
@@lapsedluddite3381 I even love all those chains with hooks, I've got some old ones (a bit smaller) I found years ago and have used them ever since for hanging flower baskets and wind chimes from trees and patios. What I see with those huge ones is a long rectangular 'old' wood hanging flower box in front of a boring blank wall outside with flowers and some ivy spilling down... just throwing ideas out there. 😇 😊
we haven't been able to find out exactly what is was for, but it was definitely some kind of tool used on the farm a long time ago. we'll try to learn more about it when we can!
Beautiful…
Complimenti! Bellissimo posto
I was thrilled to see your lilac in bloom, so in doubt when it was first planted, and another favorite the thyme.
The bigger one is a lilac bush that was already here, but of the two that we planted last summer the bigger one had flowers this spring! The smaller one will be for next year, I think. We also transplanted 5 offshoots of the lilac that we got with the house, and we're looking forward to future springs with many more lilacs
8:07 : Yay Voluto!!
wonderful
so cool! to see your kind of work and the results!
Love your stone buildings! I've built dry stone walls myself and I noticed that you're building it without a gravel base. Not only does this provide good drainage but it will also prevent your wall from sagging over time. Maybe there is a solid footing if not you may encounter some issues in the future. Otherwise it does look nice.
what we were told by a local dry-stone wall builder is to dig in the bottom layer of (big) stones as the foundation. we haven't dug them in as we will be adding soil on top of the current level later. we have backfilled with gravel and rubble to improve drainage. let's hope it works and otherwise this wall isn't too big to rebuild when neccessary. :-) we'll definitely look into it more so thank you for the advice!
I can see myself going through all this, to get some peace and quiet only to be met with gunshots throughout the day. But that won't happen to me because you shared your lessons with us :P The stone ramp looks professional, well done!
haha yeah 😅 it's not ideal but it's not every day and we much rather have them shoot at the clay pigeon shooting range than hunting in our backyard honestly. of the over 30 houses we've seen, there's almost always something though: an airfield, a quarry, a ralley track, high voltage pylons.
👌👌👌👍👍👍💪💪💪❤
Buongiorno, You should try to do a quiche with it
oh, suona bene!
Nettle risotto and Veluto.
Me encanta el lugar donde viven!! Subtitulos en español please!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Your stump is too high for spliting... Lower the wood, the more force of the Axe! In 2015 a wind storm came through my 5 acres and Dropped over 75 Pine Trees, Big Pine Trees. This year I have just a few slash piles to cut up and Burn All in my Wood Stove. Great Work out all by hand. Your place is real tidy, Good Job!
we have different sized chopping stumps left behind by the previous owners and this one currently works best for me. you're obviously right that you loose a bit of gravity with a taller stump, but for me (a total wood chopping newbie) i find it easier to actually hit my logs at all 😅 i suspect once i get more confident and precicise with my aim i might move to using a lower one.
Love the wood piece at 15:50ish. Will you reuse it as a table base?
we love it too! we're definitely going to use it for something 😊
❤❤❤❤❤💯
That was a beautiful video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Looked like a hand forged chain.
And hand forged farm implements!
Love the treasures you’ve found. What was that huge piece of wood that looked like it was carved into a star? And seeing Velluto is the frosting on the cake. What do Nettles taste like??
We're not sure what the giant asterisk was for, I tried to ask the previous owners about a year ago but I think they thought it was too difficult to explain - at the time my knowledge of Italian was much more limited :-) Nettle tastes somewhat like spinach.
♥️♥️♥️🇧🇪😊🔥
Is that a lilac tree with those lovely pink/purple flowers?
it is 🖤
🌟👏👍🍀💐
🥰🥰🥰💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏🏵🏵🏵🌻🌻🌻
Lovely stone wall. What is the name of the big flowers on the tree.
those are lilacs (syringa vulgaris) 🖤
What is that building complex above your cascina with the towers? Is it a private residence?
Pretty sure it is the town of cortemilia
Or rather one of the villages which makes up cortemilia, bormida which has a monestary
it's our village :)
@@storiesfromthecascinaI hadn’t realized it’s so close. Very convenient.
one of the things we love about this place is how remote it feels while also being connected 🌿
❤
