  • funfact she was SO criticized for this album back in the day, people were saying she was not-feminist enough, cause all of the lyrics like "im nothing without you" and her showing her flaws and sad feelings which was not common back in 2011, so in her next album, ultraviolence, she took all that "bad things" and made it even lower and sadder and darker lol like a form of saying "fuck off I can sing whatever i want to". songs like money power glory and fucked my way up to the top is straight up sarcarms and response to the critics

    • I must’ve been in a different terrain of music in 2011. All the artists I liked in the tumblr era were very much of the same sad girl cloth. Evanescence, flyleaf, the pretty reckless, amy winehouse, a fine frenzy, marina and the diamonds, mazzy star, even Rihanna, Britney and Christina aguilera area were releasing angsty songs. I’ll even throw in avril lavigne for my Canadian rep. It wasn’t really taboo to have emotional + sad slow tempo songs/ballads. The resistance to liking Lana, I think, was her unconventional way of coming into fame. Posting her self made edits and mvs on tumblr and getting discovered, I think getting name dropped by the weeknd or something. Not really acting like a star, she wore a white shirt and jeans in like every paparazzi photo which probably annoyed the paps and didn’t get her on those shallow best dressed lists. She used unique phrasing in singing and that whisper head/mixed tone of voice. People made fun of it, especially when she used to perform in really camp ways live. It was just hating on the new girl on the block. She was always great and on to something. People just didn’t get it, or did and just were jealous and wanted to tear her down. She was beautiful, she wrote hit after hit, she wasn’t the typical safe pop girl coming out of the Hollywood machine. Parents were clutching pearls because their young kids might buy her little coke spoon necklace or something. In bad faith they saw her as leaning into female objectification, drugs and violence. That her branding and imaging wasn’t sincere or authentic with the whole glamorous Americana girl with a man her grandad’s age.

Later he saw an interwiev with her saying he is her favorite rapper. He instantly knew he wanted to collab with her. They were close friends for a while and he actually had a crush on her, said she was his dream girl. She asked him to be in the video and he happily aggreed, even though he is not rapping in the song. They do have a couple songs together, i think you would enjoy them. :)

  • It’s just so damn fun to watch someone discover Lana. 100 out of 100 is right. I can promise you her songs GROW on you. I’m sure my reaction to “Off to the Races” was similar to yours at first. But now I never skip it. I do like how you appreciate her slower, softer songs. I think that’s what she does best at the end of the day. BORN TO DIE is often criticized for the production - its definitely not on the level of something like NFR. Her songwriting also got better with time. But people who diss this album just don’t get it. This was life changing for a generation. There’s a reason it was on the charts for like 300 weeks or whatever.

  • I think “Video Games”and “Summertime Sadness” were her major breakthrough hits into the industry that made her a sensation. “Born to die”, “National Anthem”, “Dark Paradise”and “Blue Jeans” were smaller hits, half the album is singles because it was so popular - the music videos are great 👍 . I remember the music video for “National Anthem” with ASAP Rocky as a kid, I remember thinking why is ASAP Rocky in a Lana video. She just crosses worlds and has fans in every genre. I love national anthem because of the story, she’s an young naive girl who swept up by a man’s lavish lifestyle but by the end of the song she’s just lavish but jaded and empty and looking to prey on someone else like the fire man preyed on her. Endless Money slowly corrupted her through each verse. 💵

  • subbed for more lana ❤️ she’s one of those artists that just when you think you understand the music and her she throws you off with so much! there are so many layers. she’s truly in her own lane, invented her own genre and no one is doing it like her. best of the best in terms of artistry it’s not just an album it’s not just a song. it’s a whole new movement in art

  • lana has such a unique voice, and it makes her so easily distinguishable from everyone else. she deserves a grammy more than anybody else, considering that she was the inspiration behind a ton of huge female artists. she gets kicked to the sidelines so much, and doesn't get enough light for her amazing work :( it's crazy how much of a 10/10 born to die is when it's only her DEBUT ALBUM bro.. a lot of artist's debut albums are usually their worst, yet there's no denying that this one could be one of her best and most iconic

I like how even though you didn't click with the song, you found some singing or nice pockets where it sounded good and appreciate that other people could love that song. Your reaction to Lucky Ones was the best because she pours her heart out in that song with her sweet singing voice and it doesn't get nowhere as much love as it should, I also loved your reaction to Million Dollar Man, such a great song. Overall, this album is a legendary debut one, way more amazing songs than bad ones, and you will come around to liking Off to The Races, maybe the others too idk lol. Side note- the Paradise edition is a must-listen

  • i know what im about to say really only appeals to MAJOR lana del rey fans but anyway the bridge for “lolita” is the same one for “the girl that got away”,an unreleased song by her. idk its just a fun fact!

  • about the fact that you don't dive deep into celebrities' private life: you actually don't need to, with lana. her songs are completely about her!

  • Born to die is undeniably her best album, although ultraviolence is my favorite, Born to die is what made her who she is, and the songs are just so good

  • i was the same way when i first listened to her "born to die" song. i randomly came across it on youtube and couldn't take her seriously lol. the next day, i wanted a good laugh and decided to watch it again. a decade + some years later, i own most of her physical albums and got all my loved ones hip to lana. what i'm trying to say is, give it some time! if you want to try another lana album to react to, you might like "lust for life".

  • Am I the only one noticing the lyric on "this is what makes us girls" : "I got sent away, I was wavin' on the train platform Cryin' 'cause I know I'm never comin' back"? I mean, how it is relating to her own story. Especially reflecting on BB and Ocean blvd about how she wast sent away by her mother. Anyways, so great to see your reactions. It gives me a better understanding on Lana's flow, production and melody. Thanks for that. I would love to see your reaction on Ultraviolence and Honeymoon (especially).

  • I can’t believe she’s gotten so popular. I started listening to her music in 7th grade so this album holds so much nostalgia for me. I’m 24 now and it’s weird seeing how she’s grown as an artist and how she was even nominated for a grammy
