As somebody who would like to build their own shop, I am really looking forward to videos about your dream shop! Construction is more or less the same regardless of a buildings purpose; what I would be most interested seeing videos about the planning and design process, like what design choices you made and why, laying out tools for efficient workflows, planning drops for power, dust, air, HVAC, etc., lessons learned when you're done, that sort of stuff.

Great saw especially kzhead.infoUgkxxnKxcY0vm4xjW8xkPbjaHuKt10gr-wG_ considering how drastically cheaper it is than every other track saw on the market. Only things I would mention is replace the blade immediately, the 24 tooth blade supplied leaves a lot to be desired.
I just used my new Kapex for the first time this week. I think it is great. Mine has a dual laser. It is a KS 120 REB. You input was helpful. Especially the dust extraction and zero clearance fence.
Love the review. I have had mine for a couple of years and found exactly what you did. I changed to festools 36mm hose as I too was disappointed at dust collection and did make a difference as I use in customer homes but as you say on thin pieces it can't catch it all and it still makes a mess. First day on job I did cut into fence on angle cut as I too do not read instructions and just put it to work 🤦. I have broken couple of inserts as on thin cuts the offcut slips into large groove and the saw blade catches it and timber fly's off at speed.I was doing alot of flooring and this is what they designed the saw for mostly and to be light and used on floor hence the non marking feet and a sys one to be exact height to use as extensions, this makes the handle feel right at that height. Will be looking at buying your fence guide and would be interested if you make a insert for sale. Keep up the great work.

I’d love to see videos about your dream workshop. Congratulations! I’m 45, just moved and will be here for a long time perhaps not getting to build my dream workshop. My workshop space is 11.5 x 11.5 feet (3.5 x 3.5 m). I have to be creative as possible and will be limited on the tools I can fit. Seeing your small space solutions overtime has been very inspiring. I’d love to see more of your organization and space smart designs. I’m currently putting together a French cleat wall and have my power tools on mobile carts. Wish we were neighbors because I bet we could have some fun.
I've always enjoyed your videos so of course a series about you new shop would be very welcome. From the brief glimpse you showed us there didn't seem to be any roof lights, I would certainly recommend that you design some in, natural light is great to work in!
Good point. I did not think about that. But for video shooting you do not want change in light conditions because of the Sun. So when the sun is shining. I have to block my windows. But otherwise, i agree with you. I have almost always the studio lights on because it is very nice to work with good lighting.

Great video! I've recently purchased a Hikkoki mitre saw and was extremely disappointed with the build quality (I did expect this for the price) but what I couldn't live with was how inaccurate it was. I need accurate 90 degree cross cuts and 45 degres mitres. This video has persuaded me that the KS60 is the mitre saw for me!

Great review on the KS 60. I’ve recently bought one, and I noticed your zero clearance fence in the other video. An extremely clean and effective solution. I’ll certainly consider buying from you if you put them up for sale, as opposed to making my own. As your other reviews and videos, it is easy to tell your professionalism and enthusiasm. We’ll all be coloured and slightly biased from time to time, but here on YT I feel I can rely on very, very few. You’re among the very best, keep it up! Always looking forwards to your videos.
Zero clearance won't last for long. Just use the right and sharp blade. You never found zero clearance solllutions in professionel circumstances.
@@rutgerbroekman3026 You’re right about that. I bought Dennis’ ZC insert. It is very well thought out and well made. However, it interferes as with most other saws; with clamping, accessories like the Festool wings too. Every ZC fence brings the fence forward, and this throws these vital accessories out of order. I’ve a KS 120 too, which I made my own ZC fence for. I ended up dismantling it after a few cuts. So, absolutely; a sharp blade, good technique and a very slow feed rate; despite a sharp blade! gets the results you say. For cutting small pieces, a “sled” placed on the bed secured only with clamps is probably a better option for me.
Dennis 100% yes to series, you will not go wrong with "dream workshop series". As for suggestions: I would be very interested in continental/Dutch/Your way of building so complete series from ground works and foundations to finished roof would work great for me😁... with everything in between of course like framing or bricklaying, insulation, fasade/cladding, flooring, door hanging, interior fitout etc. I can imagine that takes time so whatever you manage to produce will be great regardless. Maybe a cameraman to help you out as I can imagine you will be project managing and working on it too. Nice kapex review, thanks.

Fantastic video. As you, I was a bit underwhelmed with the KS60 in terms of extraction, even though it is much better than my previous saw. I now understand why they make cuts in thick wood - seems reasonable. I want to experiment with different hoses. What dimension of hose did you use in the end?

Both the construction itself and the layout of the various tools. I don't know if you are going to tear down the current workshop or if the new one will be linked to the current one. But I think your explanation and the way in which you visualize the information is great. Actually just as qualitative as your workpieces and your tool comparisons. Keep it up.
Dennis, thanks for another great review. I am having a garage suite built starting next month and am very much looking forward to your videos on the benches and layout and the various decisions you make as you design your shop. Like you I have a lot of ideas, but your experience often comes up with even better ideas! I also have to have some built in flexibility as I still need to park cars in my workshop. Personally I cannot justify the cost for the Kapex yet - maybe one day. I keep hoping Bosch will improve their mitre saw's dust extraction and add an LED for a blade shadow line as it seems to be the only other decent mitre saw that does not require a lot of space at the back. I know Makita makes one too but it does not seem to get very good reviews.
My former miter saw was a DeWalt, but it was certainly not this sturdy. Wood is luckily very forgiving. But I find it so satisfying when things fits without too many corrections. Best of luck with your garage.
@@HookedonWood It seems only the KS 120 is available in Canada for $1995 CAD. KS 60 does not seem to be an option here.

Awesome review and possibly the best online. That fence is top notch and festool should be looking at doing that sort of thing for the money. I have the 120 so can’t enjoy that brilliant design fence.

Dennis, this is a great video, as usual I learned a lot from your insights. Love to see you do the same kind of video for your Harvey Alpha HW110LC-36 table saw. I can find no reviews of this product anywhere. A lot of unpacking but no deep insight and analysis of the product, so no way to get a sense of whether it’s good or not. Because there’s nothing out there, I’m sure you’d get lots of views and likely a bunch of new subscribers. I look forward to what you might do. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Thanks for the review Denis. I also purchased the KS60 and had the same experience with the dust extraction. I have a 60mm hose to the bench surface from the a CT15 under in the bench to maximixe the airflow but have a 27mm from there to the saw but have been looking for a better solution. I like you idea to place the 45 deg elbow on the KS60 dust port and connect the hose outside that. Could you let me know what diameter the 45 elbow is (ID or OD) and where you got the hose. It looks like it's ~ 50mm (ID). Thanks again
The more I read and see about the Kapex saws the more I think the price is justified. Everytime a new mitre saw comes out you ask yourself "but is it Kapex good?" So even after all these years it's still the benchmark for mobile mitre saws. This plus it's made in Germany which alone raises the cost without bringing any additional value to the table makes it more expensive. Over the years I just enjoyed working with good tools and it's hard to put a price tag on enjoying working with a good tool. After all it's a hobby for me and as we all know there are no price limits. 😂
Great video Dennis. I have the same saw with the UG stand and wings. Fantastic piece of kit. Just wish I could buy your fence system and zero clearance plate, but us silly folk in the UK did something that makes this not possible at the moment 🙁

Great video. I also have a KS60 and want to want people ...when cutting bevels, the bolt in the turn knob cross - threads really easily if overtightened. It happened on mine and was a nightmare, had to chisel out the plastic to be able to use saw again. Festool said it was quite a common issue.
Good to mention that. I did not know, so I will be careful. Better safe than sorry.

I would love to see the whole process over many episodes. If you did 20 episodes of China tools, then you could make 100 for the workshop. I think it would give many people ideas on how to start from scratch. Thanks for the great work!

Great vid. Thanx. I have similar expirience of universal blade, tried more fine blade without noticing any difference. I'll try the a hose with bigger diameter for less dust. What clamps do you use on ks60 and are they built in somehow?
Hi Denis. I also had a look at the specs on the cut depts for the Kapex 60 vs the 120 after your video and I was very surprised so see how little they differ. For instance 90 deg cut on the Kapex 120 is 305mm x 88mm and on the Kapex 60 it is 305 x 60mm. Its a mere 2.8 cm difference for almost double the price. I just though off the cuff the cut difference would be much bigger. To my surprise is practically very little. So I agree with you I cannot justify the bigger price tag for the bigger machine with such little practical difference. Great work all around. I have watched almost all your videos and I've learn so much. I've even watched your first videos in Dutch and enjoyed it, cause I could understand most of what you said, as my home language is Afrikaans which originates from Dutch. Greetings from South Africa.

28mm may not sound like much to you but it works out to be a about 47% more vertical capacity which is significant to many.
Ah. The manual. Believe or not, I am one that enjoys reading manuals. The saw is VERY nice. I agree with your vacuum system. Like a chimney, it has to be sized correctly, mmmm Yes, would like very much to see a new wood shop. How you organize etc. what are your thoughts on radial arm saws? If someone is just starting out to build up their shop I find them to be very versatile. Appreciate any feedback
I went for the makita Dennis, huge capacity, excellent extraction and absolutely bang on out of the box. Same capacity as the biggest Kapex but half the price
I agree, it was on my shortlist. But, again, dust control, and I think the Festool made of even higher quality.

I went to Hornbach today and saw that Bosh and Makita are now using the same handle design as festool, with the handle being inline with the blade for stability and accuracy reasons (according to the sales rep).

One of THE best video's about this saw. What I absolutely love is the possibility to cut a height of 73mm. Luckily I found that out before buying a far more expensive 88 version. How: set the depth stop so the saw JUST cuts through the wood and position the wood 30mm to the front and voila.

dag Dennis fantastische review ik ben opzoek naar een afkortzaag om mijn huis te verbouwen en zelf meubels te maken ik heb veel ervaring met de kapex 88 alleen viel mij op dat de geleide stangen soms in de weg zaten bij het zagen van grotere balken onder een hoek. heb jij dit probleem ook ondervonden ik ben zeer benieuwd omdat er heel veel afkortzagen zijn en elk merk wel zijn min en pluspunten heeft. dus ik vroeg mij af wat jij aanraadt want ik zie door de bomen het bos niet meer.

Can you do a video on fine tuning the bevel and mitre stops? I can't find anything on the internet about this topic.
Forgetting to move the top fence when mitring!!!!!!! My Bosch has the same type of system and the first time I used it, I forgot to move it. The noise of the saw blade hitting the fence was awful but, fortunately, the only damage was to the fence and my nerves. I remember to adjust the fence now! 😀
I had the exact same experience. I only hit a tiny bit, but I was really surprised in that this was possible. Will not happen again. :-)

Hallo Dennis. Super om te zien hoe je alles hebt aangepast tot nog een grotere topper van een machine. Ik heb sinds kort de kapex 120. En Idd wat jij zegt met de afzuiging valt mij nu wat tegen. Wat voor maat pvc Bocht en slang heb jij er nu op gezet zodat dat beter is geworden? Mvg Sven
hoi dennis, top video. Ik heb ook een kapex 60 maar heb er een probleem mee. Als ik de hoek heb versteld is het ontzettend lastig om de fence weer 90 haaks op het zaag blad te krijgen. Of wel als ik een plank tegen de fence leg en 90 graden wil zagen is hij elke keer iets verlopen. ook vraag ik me af of er een juiste zaag techniek is want dat lijkt ook invloed te hebben. Zoals je al zei kan je de zaag van Li naar Re bewegen als hij helemaal is uitgeschoven. Daarom vraag ik me af of je de zaag van bovenaf in het hout moet laten zakken ( soort van inval zaag) en dan naar achteren. Of eerst helemaal uitschuiven en dan terug door het hout? Hoe pak jij dit aan en met name de vraag, hoe heb je de fence afgesteld? mvg

Hi Jorrit, You are a man of details. :-) very sharp! Yes, I plan this also in the near future. Some things I like, some things I do not. But I want to discuss with someone who is more into this sharpening if he agrees with mee, or I have to change the angle from which I look to it. But I did not find the time to do so. Will be continue.

Een goed en eerlijke review. De ideeën voor spintervrij zagen heb ik ook in mijn Makita ingebouwd. Voor de vertikale aanslag heb ik 8mm trespa gebruikt omdat dat vervormingsvrijer, gladder en sterker is. Maar voor de horizontale strook heb ik stevig berkenplex gebruikt. Ook heb ik een ander zaagblad erbij voor aluminium en trespa. Dit is een 60tands "vlak/daktand" zaag die ik ook in mijn invalzaag gebruik. Bij Ecotools zijn deze zaagbladen heel schappelijk geprijsd. Voor speciaal hout (Am. noten, Wengé, en andere exoten) gebruik ik een 100 tands blad voor een superfijne finnish. De Makita is niet zo geweldig qua afzuiging, maar ik zet toch altijd een stofmasker op bij het zagen en frezen. Om de stofzuiger en/of machines te bedienen heb ik een op afstand bedienbare stopkontankt (Lidl, Gamma etc.). Bedankt voor je review en succes met je mooie plannen!

Great review Dennis, If you had started with your 10 X 6 workshop would you have gone for a bigger mitre saw,, and if you discounted the money issue would a Kapex 120 add any substantial capability that you could not achieve with the KS 60 0r KS 88?
Hi Ross, Has not that much to do with the size of the shop, although because of the bigger size I can do bigger projects and perhaps with thicker wood. You can cut much thicker wood with the 120. The 120 cost more than double the price and that is a lot of money. So far I needed two times more capacity than the 60 delivered. By flipping it around was a good solution. But at that moment, I wish I had the 120. From an accuracy point of view, the 60 deliver what I need.
Thanks a lot Dennis for this detailed review, always super precise and professional! I'd like to ask you a question before buying KS 60 because I would like to design properly my bench top. Your bench is narrow and it doesn't support the knob in front of the machine even if theoretically Festool designed it in order to be placed on the bench. Do you have any problem of machine frame bending or it is very stiff and such knob is not needed at all?
Great question. Although with straight cuts and miter cuts it is not that much of an issue, but for bevel cuts there is a bit more flex. In mu new workshop I will place it fully on the bench. Also to be sure. Now I sometimes walk against it a little and when it shifts slightly I do not notice.

Its a shame you dont have a Kapex 120 REB like most Kapex owners in the USA. Id love one of your sliding dovetail fences for that saw! Perhaps when you upgrade your shop you will upgrade your Kapex at the same time! By the way, I appreciate the look of that black MDF. I know you can buy it here in the states, but its very difficult to source it locally.
An excellent review as per usual. You mentioned your choice of Freud blade. What model are you using? I have an old Hitachi 250mm sliding mitre saw. The only thing that I do not like is the just extraction. I have modified the dust port to accept my shop vac. It works ok but not perfect. The testing that you have done on the Capex's dust extraction, although interesting, appeared to be a bit hurried. The Capex is definitely eye wateringly expensive. I rather look to spend the extra money on more dust extraction (floor or ceiling level).
I agree on the price. I had a hard time spending that money on a miter saw. I did not feel that with my planer/jointer although that cost almost 4 times more. I just think it is very expensive for a miter saw. But, it delivers, so that is good. Sorry to do it too fast. I want to de an episode about my dust extraction in the future. If I showed too much that would have created more questions than answers on this moment.

Thank you Dennis for all great videos. I have the Kapex KS60 but miss the workpiece Clamp KL-KS that you can buy for the bigger models. I notice you have some kind of quick release clamp on the right. What clamp is that? Is it a solution that works fine and that you would like to share? Thanks!

I use a hold down clamp from Bessey. I have a link in the description. (I believe) when you have place for it, I consider it more practical then the Festool clamp. But the solution in this video is not perfect. There os some flex that I do not like. I have a better solution nowadays with these clamps

About the handle pull. Don't stick your fingers inside the handle from the start. Instead, start the pull with fingers outside the handle. This lets you put the hand further up and without bending your wrist. As the saw moves down slide your fingers around and inside the handle to reach the trigger. Easy peasy.

Since you are a guy who likes to figure out clever solutions, with excellent fingerspitzgefühl, I believe a series on the construction of your new workshop would be very worthwhile watching indeed. Maybe not so much focus on the construction of the building shell, instead try to dive into your specialties. Planning for workflow, planning for dust extraction, ventilation, lightning, storage et c.
Bosch 12” is the best in my opinion & just build a simple dust box around the back of any saw to keep it clean

good tip about remembering to move the fence. does the kapex come with a laser? found laser very useful on my evolution saw for lining up cuts, although cutting metal will sandblast the laser lens and make it useless. question about your insert - now you have a product that you spent a lot of thought, time and energy on, would you trust chinese companies to mass produce it and not make their own knock offs? would also be interesting to see plans for new workshop and hear reasoning behind layout. workflow is something not a lot of woodworking channels go into
Hi, The Kapex 60 does not. I believe the 88 and 120 do use Laser. About the Chinese. I am busy to see if I can develop some products with them. But I understand your question and to be clear. I do not like that they make copies. But like I told you, I want to make some products. And because of that I studied some patents company's have because I do not want to copy products. But it is almost impossible to make something because even the most "stupid and basic" things are patented. This has nothing to do with innovation, but more with protection. So, to be very clear, if there are some innovative ideas, this should be protected to a certain level. But it should not make it impossible for other company's to produce something similar or develop a product even further. Look at cars, Solar panels, but also a table saws our restaurants. There are a lot of different brands and the models are all look the same, just small changes. I do not know how they manage to do that, because if you want make a square, it is almost impossible to do that without violating a patent.

@@HookedonWood patents have an expiry date, after which your idea can be used by anyone (hence cars, solar panels etc). have no problems with the chinese or anyone else doing that. when someone steals and sells your idea when the patent is still active, that's when i really do have a problem. i have two patents i'm trying to turn into products. why should anyone else get a chance to "copy or improve" (read steal or plagiarise) my ideas and make money from them before i do? fine, you might not be able to patent your zti as there is nothing particularly new in it, but you put in the hard work to get the dimensions, tolerances, functionality and ergonomics right. would you be happy with someone profiting from your hard work while you get nothing from it? just be careful with your designs, and should have a look at working with someone like 3dhubs.com who will help you keep your ideas yours

Fantastische video ik wil zeker u upgrades aanbod bekijken op u website. Ik heb een vraag over de kapex 60 ik gebruik normaliter de laser op een afkortzaag en deze kapex heeft dat iet. Hoe is u ervaring als Profesional zonder deze laser te werken op de kapex 60
Hoi, De laser van de Kapex 120 is heel fijn af te stellen. (hoewel dat geloof ik niet echt makkelijk gaat) Maar goed, bij de kapex 60 werkt dat met een schaduw lijn. Dit werkt in ieder geval consistent en redelijk nauwkeurig. Hoewel je natuurlijk ook het zaagblad kan laten zakken werk ik vrijwel altijd met de schaduwlijn en ik krijg hiermee een redelijk consistent resultaat.
@@HookedonWood Dank u voor reactie wij hebben nu de Bosch professional GCM 8 SJL aangeschaft omdat ik een leuke deal heb gevonden voor €224,- daar kan de festool niet tegen op denk omdat als ik drie keer een nieuwe moest kopen dan kom ik nog steeds goedkoper uit dan een keer de festool kapex te kopen. Corrigeer mij als ik het verkeerd heb want u bent een echte leermeester waar ik graag naar luister. Groeten uit Utrecht
