Parkland Burn Formula Calculation Example Nursing NCLEX Lecture Review

Parkland burn formula is used to calculate the amount of fluids needed 24 hours after a severe burn, such as partial-thickness (2nd degree) or higher. The most common fluid administered for burn injury is Lactated Ringer's. Fluid resuscitation is essential for patient survival after receiving severe burns.
This video will include parkland burn formula examples, and a link at the end of the video is available for parkland burn formula practice questions.
The Parkland burn formula is:
4 mL of LR x BSA % burned x kg body weight = total amount of fluids needed 24 hours after a burn injury
How is the total amount of fluids given using the Parkland Burn Formula?
Half of the fluid amount is given during the first 8 hours, and then other 1/2 of fluid is given over the next 16 hours to equal 24 hours.
To calculate the Parkland Burn Formula, you must know how to calculate total body surface area (BSA) that is burned in an adult.
Please see my video on how to calculate with the rule of nines for the BSA percentage.

  • To find gtts/min. Multiply 10,332 by 10 and Divide that value by 480 minutes(8 hours = 480 minutes) which gives you drops per minute or gtts/min. Same applies to the 16 hours. Just another thing we do in EMS, it's easier for getting your drip rate.

  • Yet another great video; excellent explanation of the Parkland Burn Formula. This formula seems just a little bit confusing to me though, because we must multiply by whole numbers, rather than a % (in your example it is 63 and not 0.63). It doesn't matter though, you explained it well enough for all of us to understand. Thank you again (so much!) and please keep making videos, you are fantastic!

  • Hi Sarah. Your videos are so helpful and I want to thank you for sharing them. Our class always resorts to your videos as the "go to" for learning. Could you do some videos on the Parkland Burn formula when the burn victim has suffered the burns (for example) at 0700 and then reaches the hospital at 1000. Thank you. :)
