S1 E17: Scottish Independence, Twitter & Bagpipes: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

2024 ж. 27 Сәу.
131 548 Рет қаралды

Season 1, Episode 17, September 14th, 2014. With the 2014 vote for Scottish independence impending, John Oliver explains the compelling arguments on both sides, plus he touches on corporate Twitter accounts, how the NFL handled the Ray Rice situation, why Peru should help out with the ISIS problem, and a scathing investor's report on Olive Garden. All equally important.

    • @@jeffdroog your logic is flawed to say the least. I doubt there’s a single person who has been paying for HBO for 11 years exclusively because of this show. And by the same logic you must hate the idea of student loan forgiveness which makes me wonder why you’re into this show.

      @hakasims@hakasims7 күн бұрын
    • @hakasims No,your logic is flawed lol I didn't say that was my opinion,I said I'm sure there are people who do feel that way.I guarantee there are people who paid for HBO only watch this.Ive literally paid for Netflix for 3 years so my son can watch the only 2 shows on there he likes.

      @jeffdroog@jeffdroog7 күн бұрын
    • @@jeffdroog you said “some asshole” and “insulting” so you must see how that doesn’t read as “totally not my opinion but for sure someone else’s”. You being the one suddenly voicing that point of view isn’t helping the perception. People will pay for anything to shut their kids up, but HBO isn’t suitable for that purpose. You do you, but the fact this logic remains flawed for at least two reasons I’ve listed doesn’t change.

  • As a previous employee of Olive Garden I will say I actually like their food. And the "Pots" they showed as boiling the pasta are not the pots that Olive Garden would use, rather they use larger commercial boilers, and salting those would severely damage the boiler, it's not just a pot that you can replace for a few dollars, it's a multi thousand dollar machine, and salting the water would destroy those machines quickly.

  • By what defintion is Scotlad a country, by what definition is the UK not a country? Used to be severla kingdoms? That goes for a bunch of Eurpean countries. Divested government power? Goes for US states. It's just somethign we've let the UK get away with to satisfy their vanity. Scotland will be a country when they declare independence from the Uk until then they are a semiautonomous region of the UK which is a country by any meaningful defintion.

    • Scotland is a country because its a country. The UK is a union of countries because its a union of countries, which in itself is also a country. Scotland is not a semi-autonomous region because it is, in fact, a country.

    • @@alalalala57 By what definition? To me it looks like th Uk have simply chosed to define its semi autonomous regions as countries, which is unfair to real countries because the Uk expect their semi autonomous regions to be treated like countries, to be allowed for an example multiple teams in the world cup.

      @DaDunge@DaDunge20 күн бұрын
    • @@DaDunge "th Uk have simply chosed to define" The UK did not "simply choose" to define anything. England, Scotland, and Wales are organically defined as countries due to their history. The Kingdom of Scotland was joined with the Kingdom of England when Scottish King James VI inherited both and established the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. This was one country (with one parliament), or at least James VI tried to rule it as such. In reality however, Scotland and England was two different countries still, with their own ruling elites, socio-political differences, and even laws. This was made worse since the Kingdom of Ireland was also inherited by James VI but retained its own parliament and was still recognized as another country. This would later result in Irish independence and the violent conflict in Northern Ireland all the way to modern times. Since then, the Scottish and Welsh parliaments have been revived due to the nationalistic developments in these places that wish to separate from English control. From this, I think you can tell that they don't see it as "multiple teams". They're separate teams by separate countries. While these countries are not independent states, they are still countries.

    • @@alalalala57 A lot of places used to be countries, Bavaria used to a separate kingdom. Then they joined Germany and now they are not. Bavaria also has divested powers. Sicily used to be a kingdom and has divested powers. But for some reaosn we believe the UKs BS about it's regions still being countries despite no one ever being able to give me a definition for country which would make Scotland England and Wales countries without making other non country entities countries too. It's just another example of British self importance.

      @DaDunge@DaDunge19 күн бұрын
    • @@alalalala57 actually I can give you irrefutable evidence that Scotland is not a country in a union of countries. A country in a union of countries can leave that union whenever it wants to. Scotland requires London's permission to vote on independence. Hence they are not a country. The UK is a country hence why the UKs combined vote to leave the EU (and actual union of countries) was binding for Scotland despite Scotland voting on avarage remain.
