Honestly speaking every country right now has challenges, even China has struggling people. Maybe the biggest problem SA has is crime and corruption but that doesn't justify places like Orania because there are already places that are predominantly white and they have less crime than townships because they already have security. When I sat down to think about racism, I realized that it is very natural to prefer to be with people who look like you, talk like you and live like you. It gives a sense of belonging to the people with similarities to bond and even start new families. But, what that doesn't entail is that they start feeling superior and deprive other of their own resources
It's a town of only 2000 people. Shame that people feel so threatened by this small and peaceful community. They're pretty self sufficient and don't rely much on State handouts. They're not depriving anyone.

As a Black person in the U.S. who appreciates the history of many "Negro" townships in the U.S. at one time that was completely self sufficient, and according to the constitution of South Africa of self determination there can be an exclusive Black township as well. I see no reason why Black people of means in South Africa can't do the same.

I live 30 kms from Orania. This is simply NOT true. I have worked in Orania over the last couple of years, eaten in the restaurants, stayed in the resort, enjoyed the company of the local residents. They have never made me feel second rate. I am a person of colour. I used to trust WION's reports from around the globe, but this has made me think about the trust-worthiness of the reporting.
WION lied a bunch about Canada too in numerous ways. And they white-lied about Ukraine, trying to smear them, as a way to defend India's non-participation as it watches a non-competent version of Nazism enact a genocide (Putin's Russia trying to genocide its neighbor).

I don't think you can absolve the white British & Afrikaaner colonisers for the condition that South Africa is currently in. If all the colonisers were noble & civilised people, then the colonised in every country would be richer than the colonisers and there would have been no need for the colonised people to liberate themselves from their colonisers. What I find objectionable about this town is that the colonisers who are racially non-native and responsible for centuries of discrimination against the native races are still being allowed to perpetuate the same discrimination as they did in the past- in both cases, it is ostensibly to promote their own racial identity and culture at the expense of others. Colonialism has clearly not ended in South Africa.

Agreed. It seems all cultures have the right to preserve themselves, except Afrikaans. It is in itself racist. The majority black cultures in South Africa fail to realize how much their shit stinks, even more than that of Afrikaans. They even fail to fully recognize the Khoisan, the actual original culture in South Africa. Heck, the Dutch were in South Africa before the bantus. And funny enough, the Khoisan gets most of their support from Afrikaners. Hence, most of them speak Afrikaans fluently.
A benefit of apartheid was keeping people's culture intact, many black tribes have lost their genetic purity due to mixing of tribes.
Just to be clear, the town is privately owned, so the owners have rules and regulations that if you want to live there you have to follow. Theres even a waiting list if you wanna buy a house there. Again the town is privately owned and is approved by the government
I saw a KZhead special on this town a year or so ago and they seem to have a pretty good community with virtually no crime, full employment and a feeling of safety that is missing in much of the rest of the country. The focus seems to be preserving their language and culture rather than just excluding Blacks and Whites descended from English settlers. I don't think this would be legal in the US, but since it is legal in SA and they don't seem to be hurting anyone, hopefully everyone will leave them alone.

To clarify, Orania is property privately owned by a trust. Residents apply for tenure. Not being able to live on someone else's property is not a violation of rights, that is how property ownership works? As far as I know anyone is welcome to visit the town, regardless of race, religion etc.
@@whawojedo I am in the US and in my home city, a Black developer opened a subdivision that was restricted to Blacks. He was taken to court when a non-Black tried to purchase a home that was listed for sale, and the courts indicated that if a property is listed for sale or for rent, it must go to a qualified buyer/renter, regardless of their race / ethnic background / religion / etc. SA is not the US, so I wasn't sure how the matter was handled there.

Over here farm workers automatically get tenure when they've worked on a farm for more than 10 years. Farm owners can also grant tenure if they so wish. The workers then get the right to stay on the farm and that right cannot be taken away until they pass away. However, they never own any of the farm, they can't build or break without getting permission from the owner, and they also can't house anyone other than themselves without permission. They have rights similar to someone renting a property. When a farmer grants tenure voluntarily, he can't be taken to task at all for his decisions on who does or doesn't get it. The property is his and he can do as he wishes. As far as I understand, Orania works on the same principle.
Orania has no crime, 100% employment, high levels of education and health care. Go figure.

I totally understand what they're doing and why they're doing it. For those that don't know, Zimbabwe was call Rhodesia after they separated from the UK. Rhodesia was governed by Whites and was called “the breadbasket of southern Africa.” Their farms annually exported thousands of tons of food to the surrounding countries. When Rhodesia became Zimbabwe after the Bush War, the whole economy started a rapid decline until the famines of the early 2ks and the killings of White farmers. Which is also happening in S. Africa. I'm sure these people are trying to avoid the same fate.

The town is on private property and is mostly off-grid. The town is built to keep their culture intact amidst a country where crime is rife and the infrastructures are collapsing due to corruption and incompetence. In contrast Orania has hardly any crime whatsoever and the town is progressing unbelievably well. Every job there is done by the inhabitants. As a white Afrikaaner even I won't really fit in there as I've lost too much of my culture while living overseas. Black people are welcome to do the same, but that's unlikely as they have many, many black townships which look like slums as no maintenance is ever done, it's a cultural thing.

The truth is that the Afrikaner people living there want to live in a society of their own heritage, beliefs and customs. Currently anyone can live there but you have to agree to follow the community guidelines. There is no colour bar. I know that some non-white folk who were critics of Orania were sent residential application forms by the leadership of the community but they never returned the forms or took the matter further. As a foreigner I visited Orania out of interest and was treated with friendliness and courtesy.

I'm South African 🇿🇦... Went to that town for a job opportunity, lasted only 3 weeks. Not as nice as you think, a lot of challenges. Hard work and people sometimes a bit rude because of circumstance. Everybody struggle to make a good living. There is no crime, you could sleep with your doors unlocked. They allow any other race of background to do business there, but can't stay in the town, that's all. But for me, I'll never go back. The thing that I don't understand is why people make a big deal out of it, it's only corrupt political motivation to keep on shaming them. Beautiful town. Unfortuanley, the sucess of this small town in the middle of a barren desert has created jealousy and hate from many people. At the same time, the community has been a place of learning and diplomacy for many of Africa's ethnic groups, this includes not just between whites and bkacks, but more broadly Afrikaans and Xhosa and Zulu. Many delgations from Zulu and Xhosa communities have visited Orania to learn how this community has managed water, food, economic, healthcare, road, and town planning.
