  • Hi everyone, Senehedheera here. Thought I’d take after Ryan and leave a comment. Firstly, a big thank you to all of you, the regular viewers of the show, for all your support. It’s been a while since Manchester made it this far in UC and all your kind comments have meant a great deal to us. Secondly, my teammates Dan, Ilya and Bluma, to whom I can’t give enough thanks. At the start of this whole process, we weren’t the most experienced quizzers but the evenings of practice allowed us to punch well above our weight and it was only possible because of the warmth of your company. The same goes for Connor, our reserve, who had the thankless job of watching our shenanigans from behind the camera. And speaking of practice, I have to mention our friends Reece, for managing all of our practice sessions, and Joel, Harry, and Patrick (amongst others) for their tireless help. It really was just a ragtag group of students that made this all happen on our end and the faces that didn’t appear on screen were often just as vital as the ones that did. On a related note, a great big thank you to the Trinity team, with whom we practiced consistently after our first game. It was as a direct result of working with them that our quizzing skills became sharp enough to come this far and it was a real shame not to meet them again in the competition. Finally, thank you very much to the production team for looking after us so well. Thank you to Clare, Richard and Muaaz for picking us from the initial interview and all the staff involved, from coordinators to make-up artists, for tackling the gargantuan task of making us presentable. And thank you to Amol for creating a jovial and light-hearted atmosphere in what can often be a stressful show. I can already sense a new, slightly merrier style of UC emerging under his custodianship. On a personal level, it’s been a tremendous pleasure. I mentioned in the comments of our game with Birkbeck the reasons for which I had taken this year out. To update the curious, I’m now on medication and intend to return to my PhD in September. While it’s been strange at times to see myself on TV knowing how poorly I was during these recordings, it was also a childhood dream come true. And if I can use my 15 mins to say anything, it’s to take you MH seriously people. Don’t leave things too late. Especially not so late you forget the bebop phase of Miles Davis’s career on national TV.

    • As a Manchester alum I absolutely loved watching you guys as a team, always having fun and throwing out zany guesses instead of just saying pass. I'm sorry to hear you weren't doing well during filming but commend you on raising the issue of mental health and taking the steps necessary to get help. I think you're a perfect example of how on the surface someone can seem to be functioning perfectly well - performing fantastically in a highly stressful, challenging quiz show for example, but may still have something else going on under the surface. An always needed reminder to check in on friends and family and be there for one another. I hope you're doing well and many thanks for the entertainment over the months!

  • UCL Hall here!! :) Well, well, well, who’d have thought this would happen? I think I can speak for Ali, Tayana, and Jacob in saying that as much as we hoped we would get here, we didn’t really consider that there was a particularly major chance of it happening at the start. We were so proud of the result though - I remember when the cameras stopped rolling at the end of this match we just looked at each other and started laughing because we were so excited lol, the final was just around the corner! This match was great fun, it was nice to have a lead and maintain it after having to come back against Trinity, and there were some incredible buzzes all round (still in shock from Ali’s Assam buzz). Also, should note that after guessing a random element a few rounds ago (iridium) and getting it right, astatine was yet another random guess haha! Anyway, hope you enjoyed watching, and we’ll see you next week in the finals…

  • UCL Finlay here again. Not much to add to the eloquent messages by Hall and Senehedheera - this semi final was such a privilege to be part in. A couple of notes on the questions. I did receive an apology from the shows question setter for the starter on iron. Having already answered a very similar starter question on iron in our previous game vs trinity I became convinced even though iron was the logical answer that it couldn’t be the same twice and hesitated and changed my answer - not an excuse I should have stuck with my gut but it was something the show producers were aware of after the fact. On a more positive hesitation in my final starter I was completely certain from September 1950 the question would be about the Korean War - I was afraid Manchester knew too and would beat us to an answer and was prepared to just say “Korean War” as my answer buzzing in halfway through. Fortunately amol got to the name of the river just before Roger Tilling started saying my name and I was able to change at the last second

    • Well, it only takes a split second to say your name, so lightning deduction by you changing thought in a millisecond! It would be a good strategy though, to have contestants with long surnames to give extra time to think answers through. Well done on a remarkable achievement against a strong team. A question if I may. As one that can't keep a secret for more than five minutes, how did you manage to keep you and your teams success unknown for such a long period? (My wife; "I'm pregnant! But don't tell anyone yet." Me a few minutes later: "guess what everybody!")

  • Ali Izzatdust of UCL this match was the obvious standout-not only did he nail a question that I wouldn’t have imagined _anyone_ getting, i.e., the supreme god of Zoroastrianism 17:50-then, again, the deity sharing, in part, the same name as a Japanese automotive manufacturer might have helped-but he just _knew_ many of the answers matter-of-factly, such as in that round of questions involving Italian film directors 8:24. Izzatdust was _dying_ to answer the question regarding the poem written by Pushkin 10:13 but Manchester’s Dan Grady was quicker on the buzzer and Izzatdust got his chance only when Grady missed it. UCL’s James Hall somehow knew the rarest element occurring naturally in the Earth’s crust 15:51 so Izzatdust wasn’t the only UCL player pulling answers out of nowhere. UCL captain Tayana Sawh had the same crisp, no-nonsense style-always welcome by viewers of University Challenge-as that of Imperial captain Saraya Haddad and knew a fair bit about hip-hop production, as might be expected, perhaps, from any fourth-year medical student. Jacob Finlay got the team control of the bonus questions with his answer to the starter question regarding the Korean War 26:46-obviously, _any_ correct answer helps a team but the value in _blocking,_ with about a minute to go in the match, the closely trailing opposing team from answering the starter and, possibly, bonuses correctly and tying, and potentially, surpassing one’s team cannot be underestimated. Manchester played an admirable game-and just about caught up with UCL at one point 20:20-but it just wasn’t enough.

    • @@gooscarguitar I would never have suspected that that particular bit of information was an expected quiz bowl kind of thing. Then again, we all recall how Open, a few episodes back, missed the question regarding the Tridevi, the three major female deities in Hinduism, so maybe I wasn’t unforgivably remiss in my misapprehension. (Or, perhaps, Open is just not in the same league as Imperial, Trinity, or, indeed, UCL, in which case I _was_ overgeneralizing.) Thanks for letting me (and, perhaps, others) know! 👍😊

I got anxious for UCL around 18:00, when Izzatdust inadvertently handed Manchester 'Emperor of Mexico' on a plate, and then Grady got all 3 Beatles questions right. I got even more anxious when the next two starter questions went wrong for UCL: at 19:04 (refer to Finlay's own comments above) and 20:21. At this point, Manchester had managed to narrow the gap to 5 points. I breathed a large sigh of relief when UCL got the starters towards the end of the match. I have loved Manchester throughout the series, but I think we have the best two teams in the final. I don't think anybody's stopping Lee and Jones. But you never know.

And it happened multiple times between 1994-2009, when there were fewer matches, so easier to get to the finals unbeaten.

And with a different set of bonus questions, could have actually won it. You could see them visibly wincing as the subjects for their bonuses were announced by Rajan. I really felt for them. The winning team is very strong, although I'd have to favor Imperial at this point. But as we saw in this match, the questions asked will play a huge roll in determining the winner. • UCL is actually a strong team across the board. Of course Izzatdust is on another planet, but he has good support. I really don’t know who I favor with them against Imperial… I’ll say UCL, purely because of Izzatdust’s lightning quick recall and reaction time along with encyclopedic knowledge of seemingly everything. Even with Lee and Jones, Imperial doesn’t really have that.

    @sfumato8884@sfumato8884Ай бұрын
    • Ali Izzatdust definitely exhibits, as you say, “lightning quick recall and reaction time along with encyclopedic knowledge of seemingly everything,” all with what any of us might call an almost preternatural, engaging _sprezzatura._ That said, I’d _still_ favor Imperial: Justin Lee and Adam Jones seem a bit stronger, if only because two heads (or maybe three, with an able assist from Sourajit Debnath) are better than one, _not_ that UCL’s James Hall, Jacob Finlay, or Tayana Sawh are slouches by any means. In any case, _that’s_ the matchup-Imperial v. UCL-I’d probably _most_ want to see at this point-two extremely strong teams with highly efficient, no-nonsense captains. (It’s also, paradoxically, the match I _don’t_ want to see because I’d hate to see either team lose-but, obviously, only one team can be champion.)

  • Curious that Amol should throw in casually, by way of a correction, that Descartes died in 1650 (5m29s- kzhead.info/sun/nKVvZcuLmV-saYE/bejne.htmlsi=H6X9BUKu4bA1Ac7G) given that, when he started on UC, he appeared to have no knowledge of French, let alone French philosophers. I wonder if he is experimenting with the technique that Bamber developed for apparently knowing all the answers (see kzhead.info/sun/qceaZblubIitgoU/bejne.html)? If so, the difference is that (1) Bamber was brilliant at it, and (2) he finally let us into the secret, thereby queering the pitch.
