  • No Jocko, the best job in the world is having the honor to care for those of you who have served. I've been a physician for 24 years, the last 5 of which I've been blessed to work for the VA. Every day, it has been an honor and a pleasure to care for Veterans, and to look them in the eye and tell them how much I appreciate their service. Happy New Year, and thank you, sir.

  • Jocko, I respect all the things you do. I’ve found a lot of value in your books and podcasts. Obviously everyone has their side of a story. I have to wonder what your take is on Eddie Gallagher and how Steve Ward played into it. Eddie’s interview with Shawn Ryan was pretty powerful and from his side this man abandoned him. I would also like to hear Steve’s side of it.

    • If you’ve ever been in the military you’ll realize when someone from up top comes down and says hey we aren’t gonna associate with this dude and protect the organization then you don’t. You comply by any means necessary. If Ward had tried to protect Gallagher he would’ve faced retribution inside the SEAL Teams and big Navy who was also hot on the case. At the end of the day that’s why no one went to bat for him because this isn’t the Civilian world where you get freedom of speech. The UCMJ is very clear and if they disobeyed those orders they faced punishment. Gallagher has a right to feel abandoned obviously because he was by his own brothers and what happened to him shouldn’t have ever happened at all - but he self admitted he wasn’t the best leader in the world ether and that’s could also be another factor of why guys didn’t go to bat for him. Ward who just took on those roles more or less did the right thing and what he was told. Eddie wether you believed it or not was facing War Criminal charges and when you’re guilty till proven innocent you cut those ties there. The only people to blame the entire incident on are the SEALs who made/crafted the false allegations and there’s no reason why civilians or non team guys should be trying to bash seasoned NSW guys like you see in comments and Reddit threads because they did what they were told and left Eddie out to dry wether right or wrong. Also I mean you’re right Eddies side is the only side out there and there’s no telling if his side is 100% the truth ether compared to his central command and platoon mates that were over seas with him. Jokos podcast is also indicative of the types of military guys he has on compared to Shawn Ryan who’s has said he’s largely stepped away from the teams altogether. Then you have guys like Mike Ritland who are pretty in the middle of it.

    • On top of all that you can watch Wards NCIS interviews which Eddie frames him as being a liar but they only thing in his interview he can’t recall is the JAG officer he talked to who was then Currently at Group 1 but the investigator tells him it couldn’t have been her as she was in Korea. Then he stumbles which he could’ve easily just made a mistake. Prior to that Ward explains basically he got the petty theft complaints and more that it was a growing group of people thus having to make the hard call to go ahead and pull SC and billet and wait on an leadership. Then once that group of guys realized he would be reinstated concocted the murder allegation which was reported in that January.

  • I totally understand that both of these men had incredibly high leadership positions within the seal teams. And despite the books & podcasts that’s out there for everyone to get insight to the teams, there’s still a certain level of responsibility to not reveal the behind the scenes dirt that may paint much of the teams in a bad light. But with that said, it’s an indictment on Steve and even those that Jocko used to work with that they made no mention whatsoever of this scandal or maybe even tried to explain their position and bring to light why they made the decisions that they made. Because by not saying anything about the Gallagher scandal, it makes Steve and the rest of leadership appear like they did play politics and completely turned their back on a brother, instead of taking the position that Eddie is innocent until proven guilty.

      @natrone23@natrone233 жыл бұрын
    • @@ronaldcaudle7167 so correct me if I’m wrong, but he didn’t get a pardon. He got intense support from the president to allow him access to a fair trial and fight the case. A case that he fought and was found innocent. A jury found him innocent. During the course of the lead up to the trial and the trial itself the prosecutor had to be removed from the case for illegal spying. Then during the trial another seal, one of the four accusers, admitted to the main charge that they were trying to lay on Eddie. So I don’t think he got a pardon at all. And one of the guys that accused him of something eventually told the truth and admitted guilt and Eddie was found not guilty on every charge except taking the photograph. So if you’re upset about him taking a photograph then I think you’re grabbing at straws. Not only is that not that big of a deal but we are talking about him taking a photo next to a deceased ISIS fighter. A fighter that would happily cut your head and Eddie’s head off one after the next and film it for your families to see. So I don’t care very much that Eddie posed for a photograph.

      @frankdee4579@frankdee45793 жыл бұрын
    • @@natrone23 so I’ve never served. Nor am I an expert on law or even this case. But which of the accused crimes do you think he’s guilty for? The murder of an isis fighter that someone else confessed wasnt Eddie. Or the 2 murders they tried to tack on later on and couldn’t bring any evidence to prove. Or are you upset about a photograph that he took? Personally I don’t see posing for a photograph making you a war criminal.

      @frankdee4579@frankdee45793 жыл бұрын
    • @@ronaldcaudle7167 and the higher up the chain of command you go in the military you go, the lines get blurred and it becomes very political. As it does in DC, In law enforcement, in labor unions & any other organizations where positions are appointed and those positions bring better salaries and prestige. So I got to imagine that very few, if any, believe he was guilty of what he was accused, or view him as a war criminal or a bad seal. I just believe they got their marching orders from the very top. Secretary of the navy and a top admiral or two, don’t like a bad news story and told the top chiefs exactly what they wanted and they carried out their wishes. And to preserve their own careers, they turned their back on a brother. They could have at least backed the guy to some degree OR played it totally neutral and allow the process to play out with him being presumed as innocent until proven guilty in court. Instead he was shunned by a community that he all but gave his life for. A guy with a decorated career. Sailor of the year. Incredibly high grades for being a great chief. Turned the worst platoon into the best platoon. I don’t think a guy like that would have lasted this long and thrived as he did and rose through the ranks as he did, if he was a monster. Only for the seal community to allow him to rise to become someone with a spotlight on him snd the community and then that’s when they decide “ok now we have to take him down and get rid of him”. This doesn’t make any sense. Between the politics that gets played at the top of these organizations and the fact that a group of his peers found him not guilty, I don’t see how we can continue to not see him as an innocent man. Maybe he was a hard boss and expected a lot out of his men. So maybe he was perceived as a hard ass and jerk off. Maybe you can feel him posing for a photo was unprofessional. But I can’t at all see how he’s a war criminal.

But it seems to me that NCIS and the accusers did everything in their power to paint Eddie Gallagher as a monster from the very start. They were very successful at doing this and I would imagine that a lot of team guys must have thought “well they wouldn’t be going to such great lengths if this weren’t true.” And then the more mainstream a belief becomes (in this case, the belief that Chief Gallagher was a monster), the easier it is to believe. I’m not trying to make excuses or cast judgement or anything. Just my thoughts on why things may have turned out the way they did.

  • True, we only know one side of the story but Jocko and his company always rave about leadership. Wouldn't a good leader try to clear this up, especially the allegation about what SW told Eddie Gallagher's parents? Granted, both podcasts came out on the same day but if SW remains silent on this I don't think it'll reflect positively on him. Killing ISIS savages is considered a war crime?! I believe Jocko himself referred to them as savages in an interview. Chain of command, of which SW was a part, kept pushing for that trial. Both NCIS and the Pentagon took some corrective actions in regards to the NCIS agents and the prosecution involved. The same machine that painted one man as a monster then, once the case failed, forced some agents into retirement ..

    • Also another SEAL(who was one of Eddie's accusers) admitted to killing the ISIS prisoner himself during trial. People keep bringing up this charge without bothering to investigate its outcome in court. Eddie has also since revealed that 2 of his accusers visited him in the brig. To basically apologize and admit that they had concocted a story and it got out of hand - after things were escalated to the NCIS.

    @Manny-ws1mh@Manny-ws1mh3 жыл бұрын
    • The part where steve is talking about leadership in his first platoon, at 40:52 he could be talking about David goggins, that’s how Dave goggins describes himself. Apparently he had a poor relationship with a lot of guys in the teams because of what steve said. That could be the reason jocko hasn’t had him on.

But even with that, he uses his ex-military career to promote the shit out of himself. • I’m assuming it’s because he doesn’t have all the information (he’d been out of the teams for a while and that point) so he doesn’t want to cast judgement, and because I would guess Master Chief Ward does not want to talk about it. After all, he made it seem like the Gallagher incident was why he left the teams. I’d love to see Chief Gallagher and some of these other people talk about it (1 on 1 of course) in a mediated discussion. Probably will never happen though.
