In January 2012, the Spanish Navy Replenishment Ship called the Patino was conducting escort duties for merchant vessels in the Indian Ocean. One night, the Patino was waiting off the coast of Somalia for a Cargo ship when the unexpected happened; a group of pirates attempted to board the warship.

Pressumably it has a hangar to protect it of the rough sea. I dont think proper cargo ships have a chopper, but theres for sure some to for example fly sick crewmen home or similar missions.
Been out for days in bad sea and attacked when it was dark + i bet the overall smartness among sea pirates are below average.

I'd be curious to know how much financial aid for Somalia would cost versus the costs of the multi-nation anti-piracy operation. I believe even the Chinese navy has participated.

Being flown to Spain to stand trial for their crimes must have been a luxurious vacation for these pirates. The worrying feature of this is surely the ability of a small boat to approach a warship quite undetected in rough seas.
The skiffs used by these criminals are small and the height of the waves actually can hide them from radar and IR, as explained in the vid.

During that wargame BLUFOR initially lost and entire fleet of warships including but not limited to sixteen warships: one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of Blue's six amphibious ships. Essentially crippling the force's ability to continue the conflict.
Yes, big warships have to be careful around coasts and islands due to this. Coastal vessels being very cost effective and dangerous to big warships is nothing new. That's why for example, the Finnish defense force navy uses exclusively coastal vessels. They have no desire to go into open ocean. They would much rather navigate their island heavy coast and torpedo/missile down huge Russian destroyers and cruisers.

I met a relative of Captain Phillips, and he told me that cargo ships traveling the coast of Africa now have armed soldiers aboard. Any pirates who try to take a cargo ship today are at a huge disadvantage, with trained troops shooting down at them.
As a somali I've noticed that the international media fails to cover that some of these "pirates" are just normal fishermen who are mistaken for pirates and then shot at. I've heard a few of these stories. Trigger happy privateers are abroad most of these ships instead of soldiers so you can imagine the abuse of power that is possible. I mean it's not like there will ever be an investigation.

What I'm talking about is that mercenaries aboard these ships can be very unhinged. Mercenaries are more prone to sadistic misuses of power like for example Russian mercenaries active in Syria or the infamous American group Blackwater.
The fact that the Spanish only managed to kill one pirate shows remarkable restraint and professionalism.

@Robert Sears Maybe they should have an education system that is mandatory for all Somali children and um take them away from their families, transitioning starting at age 6. "But Somali families need their children." For unpaid labor and when that labor cannot suffice, they join gangs and become pirates or child soldiers. "But children need their families." That is why they only come during the weekends and return to mandatory education. You can be homeschooled, but your parents have to be wealthy. Also children really don't need their families. They need guidance, which they can get from anyone who is willing and proper.

This is actually really scary if you think about it. That skiff was in contact with the Patino's hull before the lookout called the alert. If it'd had explosives instead of men in it, there would have been a lot of dead and wounded sailors from that ship. The USS Cole comes to mind.
Sadly this is a problem for any modern navy in peace time. Any unidentified vessel could come in contact with an extremely big warship, even an aircraft carrier (This happened to the french nuclear aircraft carrier Charle de Gaulle in November 2021 for example) because in peace time they aren't allowed to open fire before identifying a real threat. A surprise attack on your most crucial warships just before declaring war is a really serious threat to many navy around the world and one of their biggest weakness.

@@dubious6718 American warships aren't authorized to fire warning shots, unless doctrine has changed in the last decade since I got out. They can only issue warnings over loudspeaker and ship's whistle, then if those aren't heeded, they can open fire if the offending vessel is in their exclusion zone (I don't remember exactly what it was called)
That's the thing though, the pirates were looking to take the ship and its cargo for ransom, as opposed to the USS Cole where they were looking strictly to cause damage and death.

I spent a couple of weeks on board the Patiño. I was in the Royal Navy and based on the Spanish ship during a NATO exercise. Great lads and lasses. Very professional sailors. I was impressed.

The funny thing is, incidents like this and armed guards being present on other cargo ships has largely curtailed pirate attacks.

The Spanish Penal Code has, or used to have, under the crime of piracy, a heavier penalty for "the pirate captain or skipper". That must be the reason why one of them got more years.

If he was identified as somebody who fired directly at a person means it is aggravating as attempted murder. We do not know, what damage they caused and if they injured somebody, that is also aggravating. But you are right, if he is the one who hired the others or had the command, then he is the leader, also aggravating.
Imagine being a pirate, boarding this ‘unarmed’ merchant vessel only to be met with the bullets of Spanish marines, only then to realise you’ve just tried to seize a warship of one of the worlds most powerful navies…
I think it would have been even funnier if it was a American carrier, but I cant imagine mistaking one for a cargo ship but I could be wrong.

I wish this was what happened when I was aboard the USNS Lewis and Clark, we were tailed by a nearly identical boat. The result was anticlimactic as they were blasted with warnings from the LRAD and we outran them. Being a military supply ship we were well equipped to deal with them and had much more firepower and manpower, but they never made it closer than a mile before we slipped away. It would have been cool to see what M2 .50 cal machine guns and M203 grenade launchers would do to a boat like that.
Lukcily you didn't. COuld've hurted, or even killed people. Don't forget almost no one is a bad person. It ALWAYS is because of that persons surroundings and living conditions. (There are a few rare psychopaths who probably are truly bad though.)

It is terrible that they live in such a country that piracy is a way of survival and they don’t have better opportunities to make a good life for themselves. That also happened to RFA Wave Knight off Oman. I was on it at the time. Around 11 o'clock at night the 'Quickdraw' pipe came over the ship's tannoy. We all stood to and found three fast pirate boats, lit up like New York, attempting to get us in a pincer movement. All we did was squirt some 20mm with tracer in their general direction. For some reason they then decided to high-tail it in the opposite direction at the rush!
What year? i was aboard the USS Mason on deployment in Aug 2019 and refueled with you guys off the coast of oman and i dont recall hearing about pirate attacks during that time. Glad you gave the pirates hell though, i'd imagine you would've ripped them up if they got in range of those miniguns yall carry!

@@knobeljoseph11 Hi there. It was in 2009. In those days the pirates used to wander all up the Omani coast as at the time no one was allowed to sink them. Most depressing from our point of view. That same year the Wave Knight was present when a British couple was kidnapped by pirates and we weren't allowed to open fire. Allegedly so we didn't endanger the couple, but in reality we had to get direct permission to open fire from London and permission wasn't given. It wasn't long after that that attitudes changed. In 2011 the RFA Fort Victoria had an open brig built under the flight deck for storing the pirates we captured. They were then transported to Kenya for trial.
It's amazing that some people think, "I'm sorry, we thought you were defenseless." is an excuse.
I do not think this was a defence. Most people in the comments cannot tell the difference between "They said that this has happened" and "They have defended their actions by this". I am sure that they said their names, and it was not "I am innocent because my name is ...".

I can remember a similar story, a decade or more ago, about a group of pirates that attacked a 'merchant ship' carrying French special forces. Needless to say, it didn't go well for them. At least in that case, the ship was supposed to look unarmed.
That actually resulted in a film being made about the affair. Can't remember the title but a damned good film.

They did the same kind of mistake against a French Navy replenishment ship 🤣 It was also during night. The French ship saw them coming with radar. They pretended to escape (but not too fast). On the morning the pirates had to face to 40mm gun 😅

Just to be exact: a replenishment ship is not a warship, just because it’s belongs to the Navy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish sent this ship with this purpose willingly, as it easily can be mistaken for a cargo ship (which indeed is: an armed cargo ship from the Navy), so it’s a quite good trap.
For all intents and purposes, the Patino is a small freighter. You're correct, it's not a warship, and its large complement of Marines was likely due to protect the ship from such pirates as it really has no offensive weapons. It's mission was likely to support the real warships operating in the area. I think the pirates got off easy, they should have been tried and then hanged.
Even military replenishment ships are considered a war ship they deliver cargo to places while potentiall getting shot at they have men armed to the teeth all with militarty training theres no civillians on board. And it has guns to shoot at lightly armored vehicles and low flying planes it is by att purposes a warship
Pirates aren't that smart at all ,they thought that was a cargo ship but fortunately it was the oposite ,i think it would be alot better to eliminate pirates uproot ,if the navy and marines change the look of their vessels covering all official displays ,i mean to look like a normal cruiser from outside but realy loaded up inside ,no need to deal with more problems any more ,this is just an idea to erradicate those f...n pirates! that doesn't belong here in this world.

@@jeffburnham6611 he clearly stated that it carries 2x20 m cannons and at least 2 SeaKing helicopters which i presume carry some weapons. (door mounted machine guns) To a small pirate skiff…that’s plenty armed…not to mention 180 armed marines.
It should happen to all pirates. I think every ship that's required to sail in areas known for pirates should have arms enough to fight off an attack like this, or alternately have armed guards to protect the ship.
A ship at sea can pretty much carry anything it wants. The problem is when that ship enters the territorial waters of a country and is thus bound by that country's laws. Most of the "armed contractors" are stationed on so-called "arsenal ships". They meet with the cargo ships in international waters and transfer the armed guards there, then reverse the process just before the cargo ship enters port.
I remember holding an internet conversation with an ex-USMarine who was working as an engineer on a cargo ship. He suddenly apologised and disappeared only to return about half an hour later to relate how he'd had to disuade a group of pirates using an assault rifle kept for that purpose.
Nothing like the sting of a 20 mm. hornet to dissuade thugs from being a nuisance. Feed the sharks, boys!

It has to be pretty surreal feeling of "game over" to be picked up by a military helicopter, then taken to a foreign country, where you are put through trial for piracy, and sentenced to a decade in prison

They'll probably have way more food and a thousand times better living conditions even in jail + if I am not mistaken get to walk on Spanish soil after they've completed their sentence. It's a win-win for them if you think about it.
That doesn't feed their families back home though. It's sad that illegal commercial fishing pushed fishermen into piracy. Poor decisions all around.

When you accidentially encounter the final boss in a game that you just started
Not really the FINAL boss, it was just a replenishment ship after all, those are basically just cargo ships manned by military men. They could have run into the actual warships these one was trying to replenish. So this is like triggering a late game field boss in the early game, but not really the FINAL boss.
Back in early 2000s my brother was deployed with the United States Navy and ran into pirates . Of course his ship was a little more armed with a mixture of flak guns and machine guns and shit. But he said 2 groups of pirates mistakes them for a big cargo ship and it was sorta look over the side and just open fire . He said it happened twice .
