Layoffs, lawsuits, license revocations. The tragicomic spectacle unraveling at Sports Illustrated bears all the signs of a familiar tale: how hedge funds can take a functional, beloved brand and transform it into an anemic husk of its former self by mercilessly draining it for profit. Washington Post National Sports Culture and Politics Reporter Michael Lee joins Edge of Sports for a frank talk on the putrid effects of venture capital and hedge funds on sports media, Black Lives Matter in sports, and more.

  • This is a great discussion and I want to applaud you both. My first awareness of this with sports writers and announcers began back in the 80s in NYC. I have always been a Paul Bear Bryant fan. He was the greatest coach Alabama ever had. He was the one that got the black footplayers on the field at Legion Field, with the Texas coach bring his team there. Then Bear placed the black players at Alabama. Thank you both very much for doing what you love and to those that has inspired you. I am still with Capernick, I still take a knee to the American flag. I have given up watching sports, although I still appreciate those with integrity who has to play sports. It's called greed, me first with big corporate powers . Those sports scouts with their pockets getiing filled. Thank you both for the sanity in this discussion. As we all know O.J. Simpson passed away quitely on April 10, 2024. Another career destroyed by ego. I do believe those hits to the head on our football players and boxers has taken its toll. Neurology has proven that by studying the brains of those. More caution in sport's with rules.

  • With the legalization of sports betting and the fact most of the major leagues are now partnered with, and now heavily pushing sports betting apps. From this point forward... I'd strongly advise everyone to treat professional sports just like professional wrestling. Where the outcome of matches are predetermined or heavily skewed to particular players or teams. Even with supposed safeguards. I truly believe there is a cabal of corrupt officials, referees, and players working behind the scenes to fix games. There is simply too much money to walk away from. If and when the inevitable scandal is ultimately exposed. Be it in a few years or a decade or two. It'll make Pete Rose look like a saint.

    • I know a little about sports. I watch sometimes with my husband and son. Their complaints about owners, about refs, about players bland conversation sparked a thought. I wondered aloud that maybe games are fixed. Ya ya everything's a conspiracy, they said. Well, turns out you night be right.
