In this video we will take a detailed look at how I created this winter themed diorama base. Themed around the defense of Bastogne by the 101st Airborne and 10th Armored Division during the Battle of the Bulge.

  • Beautiful diorama Shane! I haven’t seen those ice sparkles used before and they really did the trick. I 100% agree that Ian’s scratchbuilt dioramas are inspirational.

  • Just stumbled across your channel looking for a kit. I'm waiting for your second installment on the M3 half track and watched this diorama build. Looks perfectly dreadful. Cold, snowy, wet, yucky, I think I'll stay home in my warm house next winter!! But, given the heat we have now, maybe your snow isn't so bad. In any event, your diorama is very cool. The ground is perfect!

    • Thanks Perry! Welcome to the channel and glad you enjoyed the video! Winter scenes are something I've wanted to do for a long time. And with my great interest in the Ardennes Offensive it seemed it was time I gave it a try lol. The M3 Halftrack is on its way, it will be part of a much larger diorama and had be in the right headspace to undertake that project. However my mojo has returned for it so we should be seeing videos on it in the next few weeks.

If I ever do a diorama with snow effects then I now know exactly where to look to find out how to do it! The building and vehicles are brilliant too. We'll done ✔️ 😊

    • Thanks Michi! That is very high praise indeed coming from a Diorama veteran such as yourself! The next two dio's will have pretty busy seen on a roadway so nothing complex groundwork wise. But the other dio will be a forest scene with the 101st and a M18 tank destroyer. Which will be a lot more involved as I intend to add tall pine trees, fox holes and size of artillery strikes into the base!

  • Dia dhuit, Shane! I have to say you did a mighty fine job with this build -very impressive snow effects! And again, I will definitively *steal* some of your techniques 😁And I also like your way of fabricating buildings - by buying them!!! What Ian does in that respect is absolute mastery and I definitively do not have that level of skill (or that kind of patience for that matter) to even try to attempt to copy him. He is insane(ly good). All in all, your diorama is awesome, my friend! Please keep on building. Oíche mhaith, Mike

  • This is damn good. Many people often have the buildings wrong in Ardennes diorama's.

    @laurentfranco8075@laurentfranco8075 Жыл бұрын
    • I've noticed this too, seems a lot of people use German Gothic style buildings for this region which really isn't appropriate for the Ardennes

      @longlance67@longlance67 Жыл бұрын
    • @@longlance67 True. The overall building style is difficult to define really. It doesn't differ that much from the rest of the houses and buildings you see in France or Belgium. But the stones they use makes it typically a building you find all over the Ardennes. They're usually produced in local quarry's. People who have never been to the Ardennes often think it has indeed that fairytale atmosphere with towering mountains, forests and German style architecture. Which isn't the case at all. It's actually a very varried looking landscape and region.

  • Really enjoyed this tutorial Shane. The figures look cold and miserable, just like the real thing. Really like the snow effects and how it ties in with the vehicles weathering. My only question would be is the contrast on the brickwork a bit too strong? Not sure. However I know what often appears on video doesn’t really match the colour in reality. Love the effort you put in.

    @stevie65able@stevie65able Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks mate, the brickwork seems a little more stark on camera, but in reality its not as stark in contrast. However its all down to taste as you can mix your own colours to match the hue or tone you wish and still look realistic and suit your ascetic vision

      @longlance67@longlance67 Жыл бұрын
    • @@longlance67 I know what you mean about the colours being affected by the camera. Recently completed an aircraft model and the exhaust staining along the fuselage which looks really obvious all but disappears when photographed. Go figure!

  • Hi Shane, fantastic, Diorama. You can feel the cold; it must have been bloody awful fighting in the ardennes in 1944, and you have done an amazing job with the snow and ice. It's just awesome. where did you buy the building from hope you don't mind me asking. Cheers Gary 🇬🇧

    @gary6300@gary6300 Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Gary! I was really hoping to try and capture the cold and wet of the battle. So happy to hear it translated well. The building is by a company called DioDump. I have a few of their buildings and scenic pieces and they are great and very reasonably priced too

  • I love this stuff, I'm going to attempt my very first Diorama, small winter scene with a German Tigar....I admit I'm nervous,but will try my best. I'm going to use KnC figures also .. should I "glue" them down?

    @joebloggs8636@joebloggs863610 ай бұрын
    • That is awesome! Don't worry about it too much as you will have a blast once you get into creating your diorama. Though the best bit of advice I could give when working with these different effects is use small amounts of product at a time. Work in manageable sections so not put yourself under pressure. And let each layer fully dry before adding a new effect on top of it. As for the figures, I tending to drill a small hole into the foot of each my figures and superglue a section of paperclip into said hole, then I drill a guide holes into the base where I want to add the figures and woodglue the clips before placing them in their respective guide holes. Hope this helps, if you need any more advice or run into any problems let us know shane.
