This is Cyprus, an absolutely gorgeous nation in the Mediterranian filled with beautiful little towns a laid-back way of life and an economy that is supposedly for sale.
That’s right, a fair few of you watching may have seen headlines that apparently Amazon is going to purchase the island nation and set up its global headquarters there to have its very own little tax haven.
This story was originally published by Saxo Bank which is a small European investment bank with a lot of operations in the area.
Now spoiler alert, it’s not going to happen, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds and one day it genuinely could make sense as a sound business plan. So stick around, partially because I need that average watch time so that the youtube algorithm may bless this video, but mostly because this bizarre prediction can tell us a lot about possibly the weirdest economy in the world.
There is a very good reason that Cyprus was singled out as the most likely country to be purchased in the 2020 national yearbook and that is because of its long history of hmmm let’s say being very agreeable to the whim of institutions with a healthy bankroll.
But of course, the nation is fascinating for so many more reasons not least of which is that half of the country is technically subject to an illegal occupation of the territory of the EU.
And it gets even weirder than that, if you were to look at the island of Cyprus you would be forgiven for thinking it is just one little ol country, but depending on who you ask it has as many as 4 different entities claiming sovereignty over what is a very beautiful but otherwise very barren piece of land.
So there is a lot going on here and as always the best way to make sense of a lot of this is to look at the economics of the island to work out what is truly motivating all of these powerful institutions that apparently want to own Cyprus.
So
What is really driving the economy of Cyprus?
Why are so many people laying claim to it?
How have these tensions come back to bit them in recent years?
Why would it make the ideal country for some global megacorporation like amazon to buy?
And of course, once we have made sense of all of that, we can go ahead and put Cyprus on the economics explained national leaderboard.

  • I would like to add a correction in the reason Turkey invaded Cyprus and how they planned to legitimize said invasion. At that time in Greece there was a military coup which wanted to also stage a coup in Cyprus. At some point in time both Greece and Turkey have signed an agreement where they guarantee the sovereignty of Cyprus. The Greek Junta violated said agreement with the attempt of staging the coup. With this spark Turkey now had a reason to send military troops to "ensure" the sovereignty of Cyprus. In other words if the Greek Junta hadn't attempted the coup , Turkey wouldn't have a legitimate reason to land troops in Cyprus. Edit: source : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_invasion_of_Cyprus

  • The “passport for sale” more appropriately known as citizenship by investment program has been cancelled. While the EU, certainly didn’t like it, that wasn’t why it was cancelled. Too many criminals made it through the system because the Cyprus government didn’t do the proper due diligence screening the applicants. I expect them to reform their processes and reopen the program. For small nations like Cyprus, the revenue gained from citizenship by investment programs contribute a significant portion to the GDP. Some of the Caribbean nations that have them receive as much as 40% of their GDP from citizenship by investment. When Grenada was hit by 2 hurricanes/tsunamis back to back, it completely destroyed the entire island. The revenue from their citizenship by investment program is the only thing that allowed them to rebuild their nation.

    @andrewhenley2161@andrewhenley21613 жыл бұрын

    • Shorewall How is it a conflict of interest? And between whom? Malta offers the same thing with different investment requirements and EU citizenship. Only difference is they have in the past and currently, do the appropriate due diligence to ensure only proper applicants are approved.

Lets stay on the subject of germany a little more koumbare and look at facts. Did cyprus receive aid from the marshal plan? Germany did. Did germany get partitioned 47 year ago losing 70% of its resources with 40% of it population turning into refugees?, cyprus did. Did germany pay back debts she owes other countries, like poland and greece? NO ! theres more i can say about the krauts but hopefully you get the picture. Lets compare other first world countries if you like. How are human rights and safety in the usa compared to cyprus? In the usa is education and health free? like in tiny little cyprus? Does rich japan impress you? You realise they work many hours free of charge? Are you prepared to work more than 10 hours a week for free? Lets not soeak of their glow in the dark environment or large suicide rates. You say starting from zero in cyorus knowing nobody is hard, well tell me where its easy then. • Completely ignoring a terrorist organization called EOKA-B staged a coup on Cyprus and started to target Turkish Cypriots which triggered Turkish intervention in 1974 and Turkey had every right to intervene due it is a guarantor state of Cyprus!! Completely ignoring UN tried to reunite Cyprus since then, in fact in 2004 there was a UN plan called Annan plan but in the referendum Greek side refused the plan by 75% while calling a UN plan ''unfair'', on the other hand Turkish side accepted the plan by 65% and Cyprus was reunited today if Greek side also accepted!! Claiming Cyprus found ''trillions of worth gas'' while in reality Cyprus only found 300 BCM which worth around 40 billion dollars and Cyprus will only earn 10 billion dollars from it according to contracts they made!! Sadly this video has such an extreme bias and many wrong information you should question every information given by this channel with a grain of salt...

    • @@spyridon.6048 your answer clearly suggests you are uninformed. Turkey doesn't occupy half the island its more like a quarter. Its just the north coast and a very small portion of inland. Research s book called "The Genocide Files " have a read. I have lived in cyprus for 6 years. 3 spent in the North 3 spent in the South. Whats funny is the Greek point of view is Turkish invaded and caused chaos. They can't let it go. The Turkish point of view is alot more accepting and forgiving. People on both sides lost alot.
