This is The Athletic's Week in Football.

    • When will Chelsea become good again? Three steps. Hire a modern tactician who has previously learned from PepGuardiola. Buy technical, skillful and silky players under the tiki taka framework. Don’t buy physical or athletic players. Develop the academy into the next LaMasia, just like what ManCity did. Teach them tiki taka football, skill moves, and complex tactics at a young age.

    • After seeing this it's obvious why it was canned. The Athletic clearly just want serious, boring commentary. Hearing Adam Leventhal as the host of the Athletic stuff backs this up. You can see in this episode Joe is keeping a lid on it and the other two are following. Real shame. They should bring back the podcast as a rival to the Athletic.

  • Excellent video but special mention to Joe, who is always sorely missed from discussions like these when absent. The analysis from John is superb, but Joe's levity is what humanises these long-form chats. The common folk like me always love someone like Joe chiming in with 'and that's not good is it John?' to make me chuckle and helps keep the discussion grounded and flowing without wandering for too long into the analytical deep end. Please encourage more warm hands and cool embraces.

I also like to think of the athletic-tifo acquisition as the Todd Boehly era that messed with the chemistry and changed formats way too frequently.

  • That's a really interesting point from Jon - that the 'underlying numbers' argument might not be right because teams with good players *will* tend to have good underlying numbers simply because they're likely to be doing the things that get the numbers - it doesn't mean that they'll be coherent as a team. I'd love to see a piece picking apart the effect of the stats revolution on football - where the stats don't capture the reality, how they've warped football, what the long term effect will be. I have a fear that we'll see fewer and fewer really genius players coming through, because any high risk play will be coached out of them. See Grealish at Man City, a theoretically 'better' player but far less thrilling than at Villa. Imagine that effect but starting in the academies - and everyone playing percentages all the time. I feel like we don't see many of the great moments of instinctive skill that made football amazing, like chips from the edge of the box, because they're so low probability.

    @fullydavid@fullydavid2 ай бұрын
    • Interesting point. I think you're right, but what would you do as a manager or youth team coach to change that? If you tell the kids to do more low-percentage shots they're more likely to lose games, which might jeopardise your job. Also agree with your initial comment about what Jon said, this is called Goodhart's law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".

  • I'm proposing a video series idea - a spotlight on often overlooked teams such as Fulham, Luton Town or even championship clubs like Ipswich Town, showcasing how they can rise into top teams. It can help us understand the small scale structures and the inner workings, often challenged by limited resources. This way, the Athletic can enhance media equity. While content focused on the top six clubs may draw views, as an established media house, I am sure The Athletic has the expertise to innovate and engage audiences with compelling stories from less prominent teams. Also, I would love to see videos covering women's football because I believe the content quality here can attract an audience for it.

    @dot4207@dot42072 ай бұрын
    • it's a shame given how much women's football has grown in popularity over the last few years they haven't capitalised on it, their coverage on youtube seems to only ever be a handful of videos around major tournaments

      @karl_franks@karl_franks2 ай бұрын
    • Your premise (which also wouldn't be popular enough to drive engagement) falls at the first hurdle; "a spotlight on often overlooked teams such as Fulham, Luton Town or even championship clubs like Ipswich Town, showcasing how they can rise into top teams" A two second video of Jon saying "They can't" into the camera isn't really going to generate revenue.

      @oscarx-ray3545@oscarx-ray35452 ай бұрын
    • @@oscarx-ray3545 I assume your reply is sarcastic. However, if it is serious scepticism, I believe they can on receiving adequate resources. Media attention is one of them. I should have used the phrase 'rise into successful teams'. Because success varies in form. A team's story of avoiding relegation is equally interesting as that of one winning a trophy.

      @dot4207@dot42072 ай бұрын
    • There might be a concern about the initial revenue. However, the potential for long term growth and positive impact is immense. It begins with creating sustainable and inclusive content. Gradually, it will appeal to a wider audience and attract new fans, sponsors and generate new revenue streams. The reputation of the brand will enhance, on its commitment to equity, and will help them appeal to socially conscious consumers.

Why do you think you get to exclude players who you deem not ready for first team football from money spent? And there is a 0% chance of getting £100m for Broja, Maatsen and Chalobah. Latest was that Boehly would accept 21.5m for Chalobah and Maatsen has been quoted at 30m - you believe Broja will fetch 48.5m?

    • @@ryanw2170The net spend isnt 1b euro. Hes right. Thats the way its reported because it draws the most clicks, but its not accurate. The costs are amortized, which no one seems to understand what that actually means despite being a very simple concept. So including player sales, theyre probably actually running at a profit on players on both a cash flow and accounting basis. They wont be for long if they keep it up, and those yearly transfer payments are going to make future purchases virtually impossible for like the next five years from my understanding of the installments owed, but thats not the topic. Weirdly. No idea what else hes on about though. Poch looks tactically incompetent, if i was getting fucked as hard as Enzo and Moises are in that midfield, i wouldnt be on youtube. Not sure why youd exclude injured players or youth players from their spend, its still part of their spend, and ironically im pretty sure those are the ones that were flat fee. In build up, he switched to a 3-3-4 and OOP he played a 5-2-3 mid block and allowed benfica to have the ball more and threaten. This is very similair to wt bayer did against bayern. It allowed for around 20 shots while only conceding 6. I think they would need a change in personal though to have Amorin to succeed at chelsea, and hed need a proper structure for long term.

  • The issue is a lack of leadership, which stems from a lack of players being established enough to be a leader. Most have only been there 12 months, and when you start somewhere you naturally focus on yourself before you start getting involved with other people. It's hard then when the 2 longer serving players James and chilwell both aren't really that outspoken and obviously also have injury issues. Then the senior players, you have Silva who maybe still doesn't speak English? And sterling. With sterling maybe we'll just blame the position, as you don't get many captains who play on the wings unless they are truly remarkable players. It's reached a point now where those 4 pre season leadership contenders are probably not playing either through injury or just not being better than the younger players in the same position. So it will take 2+ years I think as someone becomes comfortable leading the team. That will probably be colwill and disasi, as they both look to have a bit of personality and leadership. Enzo will hopefully grow here too, and not look like Bruno too much , and actually Jackson seems quite popular and outgoing, so he could be a big figure if his form holds. Palmer's just a good player, a bit more independent which is fine, and Gallagher I feel is a bit of a struggle as he's not a big name and not that technically great. For example how much would world cup winner Enzo Fernandes want to listen to Connor Gallagher? But if he puts in another good season then he could become a respected figure. I just think that they didn't factor in squad relationships when overhauling the squad

  • Thank you for this. You put a real analysis to what I’ve been observing all year. A suggestion for the next manager for Chelsea is Thiago Motta. I believe his tactics and beliefs can get the most out of these talented young players for Chelsea. A bonafide striker and Motta, Chelsea could compete for top 6 next season.

  • Fantastic analysis, the problem is trying to rush something that cannot be rushed. Time is the only answer to Chelsea's problems and changing managers is meaningless as the 5th change 5 years later or no manager change in the same time frame has the same effect but a seemingly different reason for the success

  • interesting analysis but what should of been questioned is the volume of injuries Lavia (would of been in the double pivot we problay would have seen less of Gallagher),with Caicedo Nkunku link up play would be more effective no captain leader Reece James etc What more important as well as why they have not been successfull is is why at times chelsea have actually performed well.
