Don't stalk the cat, they are the hunters. Ignore them so they can sneak up on you. Sneaking up on you is their thing, even if you know that they know that you know they're sneaking.
@Potato_10 I’m 21 and have 7 cats. There’s no rush but once you raise the first, you’ll get another. Then that one will grow and you’ll want to rescue another. Its a beautiful life, heartbreaking at times, but well worth the trade.
Lol, it’s funny how that guy isn’t even aware of how well it was going from the very beginning. Karen seemed immediately fine with him and interested in pets and play. But he expected her to act like a dog. Karen must be such a chill cat. She didn’t even lash out when he grabbed her from above or held her in the most absurd ways possible

My cat acts like a dog. Then again that’s how she was raised. And she’s smarter too. She tells on Jake when he eats her food. She knows what OUTSIDE means, she tries to follow us on our walks, she meows at my door and tries to paw it from underneath to open the door for attention…..

The best advice I can give anyone who is meeting a cat for the 1st time is to just go about your business and let the cat do what it's going to do. Once the cat is comfortable with you being around it, it will come to you. No need to seek attention.
Yep let the cat sniff you and that's it. They don't like to be bothered much so it has to be their choice to get petting and so on. My cat always hide when we have visitors and it takes time before he comes out. If they are laud he will sniff around but stay alert and hide again if needed.
This is what's so different from most dogs. Cats are in no hurry to flatter you.
And dogs just love you straight away unlike stupid cats
People will seek attention if they need to. No need to give advice too much.
It's the same thing with babies and young kids. Do everything on their terms and they'll decide on whether they want you to be a friend. Dogs, in general, just aren't fussy!

Dude made every rookie mistake, but powered through like a champ. He didn’t know enough about cats to recognize that Karen liked him from the beginning, but it was just the rookie mistakes she didn’t like. She was patient enough to just create space temporarily as I sign to him that “no no. Most of us cats don’t like that”
It cracks me up when dog people expect cats to immediately act like dogs. This guy was determined though and a real trooper. Karen made it a great experience - she’s a truly awesome kitty!

I was allergic to cats my whole life and after running into my own version of Karen (named Tux), who's affection I couldn't resist, I'm now 100% clear of cat allergies. Exposure worked.
same here :) i adopted a cat a friend could no longer care for. after a few months the allergic reaction died down plus i stopped getting things like sore throats. i think having the cat around energised my immune system!
Yep, same! Was very allergic to cats all my life until my roommate insisted we adopt a kitten. Took a few months, but the allergies went away and now nearly 20 years later I'm a cat rescue coordinator with 5 purrbabies of my own! I have so many people contact me wanting to remove their cat bc of a kid's allergy and I try to explain that exposure therapy generally works...a lot just use "allergies" as an excuse for getting rid of their kitty though 😞

Ok so I don’t date women with cat allergies as I’m constantly covered in their fur and probably their saliva. Can you actually break the allergy or does it vary from person to person. I cut off this beautiful girl the other day cuz I learned she’s allergic to cats.
I too am allergic to cats and have had them all my life! I have 3 right now and every once in awhile I have a little flare up but nothing that would change my mind about not having my cats.

I bet that's how a lot of people became converted from "dog people" to also "cat people". Happened to me after I stayed with a friend whose cat was lovely, funny, and walked on top of me and snuggled at night.

I was.
I never had a cat in my life! Always a dog occupied our house. My partner and I were arguing in 2011 about adopting a rescue and it came down to a kitty. I was so nervous when I held her, but it’s been unconditional love for 11 years! Lili is my baby and best friend. She’s my love and is so spoiled that anything she wants she gets! Lili has brought her papa and dada closer. We have a beautiful daughter and she brings us so much joy and love we would be lost without her. I pray to God that he gives us many more years with her ❤

Karen could've sensed his distress as well. I have a bunch of cats and there's one that's the most aloof of the bunch and she doesn't cuddle. One day, I was super sick and when my family went out for dinner, I had to rest at home alone. My cat then got into bed with me, laid herself across my outstretched arm next to my head and started purring and licking my head. I was STUNNED! She's never shown that level of behaviour before even to my sister who's her favourite. It was only until my family came back after a few hours that she hopped off the bed and if I didn't take any pictures, my family wouldn't have believed me 😂 Cats really are sensitive that way and it's nice to see this guy experience that.
Cats know when you need a dose of some love. I got one like that named Bella, she doesn’t cuddle but she can sense when I’m sick. Absolutely tremendous.

I seriously injured my neck in an accident. After I got home one day, I was in so much pain that I collapsed just inside the front door. My cat, a sweet little tortie, walked up to me with the most concerned expression on her face and proceeded to snuggle with me. Cats just know.
That cat was aware you weren't well and obviously is a compassionate cat. That's why it did a mothering thing by cuddling you. To make you feel better. That was sweet of it.

A stray cat came into my yard and insisted on adopting me 7 years ago. And yes, I had an allergy to the little guy too but that left me after awhile; I think my love for Garfield just forced my body to adapt. I couldn't imagine my life without my best friend now.
Sounds like an Orange Tabby. I picked one up that was Always outside, he would “Talk” to me every time I walked by. The 3rd time I took him home. He was The Smartest cat I’ve ever known. (Rinnie)

An abandoned cat adopted me and is now like a dog - she follows me everywhere. The sweetest cat I've ever known!
I had a big orange tabby walk into my house and decide to take up residence. I already had several inside/outside cats. I got him neuter and named him Squat (told him he was a squatter in my house). He stayed close for almost 4 years and then moved on. He came back periodically but then stopped. Had another big dark gray and white male cat show up (Smudge) and did the same thing. He still shows up about once a month asking for snuggles, then leaves.

So true. I invited a friend over to the house for dinner with her new husband who did not particularly care for cats. As quick as they sat down on the sofa my big Ginger walked right up to the husband and sat on his lap. My friend and and I cracked up laughing. By the end of the night they were friends

I've seen Karen 's story before. She is adorable. I was wincing in the first part of the video though; he was treating Karen all wrong - you let cats come to you, you let them sniff you. If a stranger did that to my 🐱, the stranger would have scratches all over him. Karen truly is a lovely cat.

I wasnt a cat person but got 3, and am allergic. Allergies subside after a while, at least mine did. Would go thru it over and over again bc it led to what i cheerish most life, my boys.
Same, I just avoid touching my face after petting kitty and I'm fine.
Unfortunately they can also get worse. So like, don't bet on the allergies subsiding. And make sure you have meds.

I just need to remember to wash my hands before touching my face. Also take allergy meds on the regular.
@caminte @Nerdferly Unfortunately for me, after just adopting my cats, I discovered I was allergic and mine got worse with exposure and I even had to get hospitalized once. I spoke to an allergist and have been undergoing immunotherapy for two years now and I'm doing great! I have a third cat now and even volunteered for the rescue organization where I adopted them which no more allergy issues.
As a cat person I have observed my cats, they can sense if a person is allergic to them. I had a cat who could spot an allergic person hundreds of feet away and target them. This cat would be extremely lovey to them, unlike she would with non allergic people. A person should consider themself blessed to be loved by a cat.

I grew up with cats and dogs, and I absolutely love them both...but I got my first cat last month and am absolutely obsessed. They're just so cute and goofy and sweeter than you'd think.
Cats are little fluffy monsters, some always want to be petted, cuddled and many times they want to be glued to you. Others, on the other hand, seek you out only when they want. For this I love these fluffy pillows
Some are BOTH WAYS! No way to figure THEM out.

My nephew stayed all night, when he got up in the morning his eyes were swollen shut. My sister in law took him to the doctor. The doctor told her and him he needed more exposure, he’d get over it. When I went away to college and came back to see my cat, my eyes were watering for 2 days and then the allergic reaction went away.

I had no idea that people's allergies to cats could slowly dissipate until my husbands allergies to cats slowly started getting better. He couldn't even touch a cat with the tip of his finger without getting a rash all up his arm and neck and would have breathing problems. When we started taking care of a stray outside cat, we noticed his allergies getting better and better the more he was exposed. We were kinda shocked. We had no idea. Now my husband can enjoy cats a lot more and actually really likes them now. He used to hate them.

you don't need allergy meds. just don't put your hands near your eyes after you pat her. I have 2 cats and am allergic to their fur & scratches. i wash my hands off after handling them and if I get their fur in my eyes I wash them out with water very well (use a face cloth). if I get scratched I wash it with soap and water. you build up some resistance after being around them for a while. she is very cute ! 😍
You just know when a cat sees you as a friend, he or she instantly presents you with its rear end in your face

I see Karen has her left ear clipped, which is a sign she was once an outdoor kitty, possibly a stray or part of a community cat colony. So she was spayed and got her shots and a microchip as part of a trap-neuter-release program for outdoor kitties. But lucky Karen to find a safe forever home with Mackenzie! No wonder she's a sweet appreciative lady😺. Parham did great, and he learned on the job for sure. No wonder he loves Karen, she's a doll!♥️😇

This sounds similar to my cat. My cat is an absolute lover. He wants to give everyone love, and get everyone’s love in return. However, my brother’s friend’s mother is allergic. I swear, every time she comes over, even if she just comes in for a few minutes, he looks like someone just stole his scratching post, and dumped his food in the trash. Absolute betrayal.
They are all beautiful and gorgeous animals.

I’ve noticed that people who aren’t really used to gets end up becoming allergic but after lots of exposure they become immune unless it’s a serious allergy :)
It’s funny what a range of personalities cats can have. Our first cat was totally ambivalent about people. If someone came to pet sit they wouldn’t even know she was there. Our second had to be the center of attention all the time. She had to try every lap and you ignored her at your peril. Our current cat isn’t much of a lap cat but she likes to chill wherever you’re at and she loves meeting new people. She’s also the only ankle-rubber that we’ve had.

Cats choose you, not the other way around. They will give you all the love in the world, but first you must show them you are trustworthy and caring.

That is a VERY well socialized, very patient cat. Excellent for a first timer like Parham. I have a friend that's allergic, too... I keep benedryl around so when he visits, he takes one right away and then my cats would happily crawl all over him.
This was beyond delightful. I've said this before: men and cat's ❤️👍🥰. He even ended up getting a cat of his own, an orange Tabby 🐱👍🥰

Yeh that was a massive breakthrough, and for the most part they appreciate it when they feel you've made an effort with them. Also people tend to assume cats are indifferent generally but ironically their walking away is a part of their seductive ways, walking away can sometimes mean you've to follow them and or follow to their lead! It makes me laugh when they have been naughty and run off a bit & start grooming them self like it's urgent & might risk glancing in your direction to see if it's worked or not! "I dunno what you're on about!! It wasn't me!" It's their gangster ways, pretending indifference in the face of the fact they know you saw them, the, deny, deny, deny rule! I'm sorry for your allergy, I found out after 16 years, I was allergic to my cat as well, it was heartbreaking!
Cats are usually more cautious with people for a good reason. Don’t rub your eyes after touching any animal. Wash well before touching your face. Just like touching dust, dirt, plants... glad you became friends. 🤗💕🐈

Yeah, someone needs to tell him that how you meet a dog (petting right away, picking up and holding, belly rubs) are the exact opposite of a cat. You let them come inspect you, get their scent all over you, and let them come up for you to pet until they decide they like you and become purring cuddle bugs. Both animals are great, just with two different social protocols.
The way most people approach dogs is completely wrong too. Supposed to also let dogs come to you, not touch or make eye contact right away. It's just that more dogs are tolerant of that approach than cats are .

Karen is so sweet! She has become fond of him instantly. My cat has been around with me for more than a year now but he only comes near to me when he is hungry 😆
Give it time! And lots of food-based encouragement lol sometimes animals just take a really long time to come around. It'll happen; just don't give up! 💪🏼💪🏼
There's ways around most cat allergies. He did well & Karen was patient enough to let him learn how to pet & hold her. My brothers allergies are worse but we learned he's fine if we reduce the fur in the air and he doesn't literally rub his face in their fur (which is cute but not when he suddenly has trouble breathing). So we just air out the house once a day, pet the cats slowly so their fur doesn't fly, be careful not to move linens in ways that can fling cat hair or flop on the couch (which is better for the couch anyway). Also, do not vacuum before a visit unless you can air out the house too, because the exhaust port will kick up dust & cat dander. If you have to vacuum while they are present, have them do something outside like phone games or read the paper comics until 20 minutes after vacuuming and airing the house. He hasn't had any breathing issues or red eyes since we implemented this on his visits, but we keep antihistamines as a safety precaution.
