The only real way to do anything about it is to move h-pawn 1 or 2 squares forward, but after Qxf8+ black is down a rook and white's attack is basically unstoppable with a checkmate coming in just a few moves.

  • At 4:14 - the white rook should go to B8 and the white has a check mate in the next move or the pawn goes to H6, the black rook is taken, then the black king goes to H7, etc. In any case, the white one has a big advantage.

  • He was in pretty good spot at one point. Rook and queen on 8th rank were a big threat and Anna would have had to sacrifice a Rook to survive, I think (I might be wrong but the eval bar was pretty much all white at the moment. When Anna moved her rook she was done for it, but he panicked and retreated his own rook to 1st rank and that was a heavy blunder, the eval bar went whoooooop to black)

    • Yep, he played B1 to defend when he should have went full throttle offensive with B8. Checkmate on next turn if nothing is played. Anna’s rook can’t take or it is still checkmate via back rank queen check. The only escape is to push the pawn, sacrificing the rook and also the pawn above the rook and destroying the king defence in the process. A lethal move Mike completely missed.

    • I saw that too, though her rook was protecting her king so she didn't need to move it and take the other rook. She could have opened up an escape route with a pawn move instead. Not sure what would happen after that though.

  • At 2:48 if you sacrifice your queen by putting it on b8, you can win against a beginner! Because if rook takes queen, then rook takes rook, and then when bishop or rook or both bishop and rook get brought down to defend the king, you capture them both and it's a checkmate!
