Ukrainian farmer comes up with novel way to demine his fields

One Ukrainian farmer has come up with a novel idea to remove mines left in his fields after Russia's invasion -- he has kitted out his tractor with protective panels stripped from Russian tanks and operates it by remote control.
After Russian forces were driven back from parts of eastern Ukraine by a Ukrainian counteroffensive last year, swathes of fields were left covered in mines, making it perilous for farmers to sow grain for the next harvest.
The village of Hrakove was no exception and Oleksandr Kryvtsov, a general manager at his agricultural company, decided he could not wait for help from overworked official deminers to clear his field.
Instead he designed a remote controlled tractor that could withstand blasts. Using the armour from damaged Russian military vehicles to protect the body of his tractor, he bought a system that would enable one of his team to operate the tractor remotely -- from the bucket of a digger suspended in the air nearby.
"We started doing this just because the crop sowing time has come and we can’t do anything, because the rescue services are very busy," Kryvtsov told Reuters.
"We ran over an anti-tank mine. The protection got blown out. The tractor is safe, the mechanics were not here. Everyone's alive and safe. The equipment was restored and repaired."
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told a government meeting on Friday (April 28) about 30% of Ukrainian territory was mined by Russians and that the government was focused on de-mining agricultural land as soon as possible.
Serhii Dudak, head of the demining unit who oversees the work of the tractor, said the amount of work his team has to demine fields was "huge" and that the wireless tractor was good because it could clear large areas with no risk to life.
"We have no time to demine the fields. The amount of work is enormous," Dudak said. "It would take years to demine this particular field by hand and to guarantee that there are no mines here."

  • As a farmer myself, I can say it is hard enough dealing with weather, diseases and cost of goods. I can’t imagine having to worry about random mines in your field.

Farming isn't for the faint of heart, the hours are long, the risks are high, crop choices and management vital for success, the market place and the government can take it all away in the blink of a eye. • While the problem they’re solving is the same, and the solution is similar, the method of execution is very different. This is essentially a protected mine roller. A rolling weight out in front of the vehicle to trigger mines, with a screen of armor added in between to protect the vehicle itself from blasts. The roller would still need to be replaced after every mine detonation though. The Crab tanks were mine flails. A cylinder of metal is held away in front of the vehicle, with many hanging chains attached to it. When clearing mines, the cylinder would spin very rapidly, the many chains attached to it beating the ground and triggering anti tank mines. One of the main benefits to this more complicated system is that it’s redundant; even after a mine is hit and detonated by a chain, even if that chain gets blown off by the explosion, there are other chains that are still attached. What this farmer has come up with is a brilliant idea, and probably the best use of the resources available to him. Mine rollers aren’t a bad idea -there are reasons that even the US military has mine rollers for the Abrams- but this isn’t quite what Hobart came up with for the Crabs. There are some modern mine flail vehicles out there, which I’m sure would make clearing these fields ten times faster if a few were included in aid packages.

A large outfit can afford to hire and train a mechanic on a wide range of machinery and allow him to enhance his skills to a much higher degree than a small operator doing his own repairs on a small set of equipment. The downside with collective farming is that output may not be as high as in family farms more common in the West.
