The designers Benedict Foley and Daniel Slowik have taken a delightful cottage on the border and Suffolk and Essex and created a charming interior based around their shared taste in collecting, their cheerful acceptance of the house’s imperfections, and an irrepressible sense of humour.

  • "People want you to pay more for their bad bathrooms" oh lord what a quote 🤣🤣 I adore these looks into people's homes so much. Much of it is not my style, but it's so wonderful to see homes truly lived in and suited to someone's tastes !!

    @laurenmiller149@laurenmiller1492 жыл бұрын
    • That so resonated with me. When I was house hunting - many years ago now, I quickly realized if I chose certain houses I would be paying for someone else’s renovations that were completely unacceptable to me. That prompted a new strategy of looking for unrenovated homes. I lived for many years in a house that had been completely renovated by us and was totally to our liking!

    • Yes! It's the worst. House hunting crushes my heart when I see beautiful historic properties that have been utterly molested inside and modernised in the most hideous way. Once those gorgeous architectural details have gone, not only is the atmosphere changed forever but the asking price is always sky high; they want people to pay top whack only to have to spend a king's ransom gutting the place and renovating top to toe in order to disgorge the monstrous 'directional' contemporary fittings and fixtures from the grand old property. When bad interior designers are allowed to put their stamp so forcefully onto a high-priced property it's INFURIATING. How do you decorate and put your own things around such aggressively, and comprehensively modernised interior renovations? The ugly built-in features and directional interior design flourishes are everywhere and so oppressive that they're impossible for anybody with taste and character to work around. I pass on all these properties because I can't bring myself to go to the top end of my budget for an admittedly beautifully executed (but hideous) renovation, knowing I now need to find the money to entirely rip out brand new fittings, paint, fixtures (and bathrooms, yes) and re-do it all. Defeats the purpose of buying a 'turn key' home doesn't it? Whyyyyy do all these developers do this?

    • I too just love his comment. He says it so perfectly. I cringe at all of the listings that say "renovated" or "updated." I just know these updates are probably going to be awful in almost every aspect. Plus, these days everything will be grey and white. I always hunt for the untouched property.

  • Thank God, another Design Notes video! Maybe it's the pandemic, but there have not been enough of these lately. My favorite thing is to pause on each new shot and study the color.

    • Karl you're my spirit animal. I totally agree with you, I do the same. I study everything too. There's a realistic strawberry vase from Latzio Living which I tracked down after pausing on a video. I had no idea where it was from but eventually found the vase on the above website. I'm like the David Attenborough of soft furnishings and artwork.😂

  • I live with a compulsive book buyer. I don't know where to put them anymore, and when I hang out with him at a flea market or he comes back from a visit to a bookstore, I sometimes feel desperate 😆 So you can't imagine how much your landing, with its piles of books, comforts me! Thank you so much for the visit: your house is lovely.

  • Found this video just in time! I am packing/dispersing my home ready for a move to smaller more managable house next month. Spent today agonising over too many books and what to do about my collection of vintage toys/fabrics/rugs/nicnacks. After seeing this lovely home I am taking everything with me and squashing it all in. I now have the courage to stand up and say - this is my new home, these are my things and I love them!

  • That dining room is really exquisite. One of the more successful interiors done in 'English maximalism". The beautiful colours pull it together. I also like the fact that while there are some really nice pieces, none of the antiques or art work is really grand luxe, it looks relatively attainable in terms of cost.

When someone mentions Colefax ike it's a local general store, you know you're listening to privilege, if not necessarily "wealth." Who else seeks untouched spaces with such highbrow negation of "modernized" interiors? It's funny and reminds me just how polar opposite my undesirable world is from theirs. Here, one cherishes the glorious material remnants of a bygone era.
