  • Hi Brian, great video! I recently lost my Dad, who was an avid sportsman and LOVED fly fishing. He was very ill his last ten years from the effects of the Agent Orange he was exposed to in Vietnam, so he wasn’t able to get out as much as he wanted. He hated the amount of hours I work and the last time I sat with him, he asked me to go get his fly rig. We sat for hours, as he went in and out of consciousness, talking about the good’ol days and the ones that got away. He asked me to take his rig and care for it, as he did with everything he owned. I hugged his neck and kissed his face and we said our goodbyes. His last words to me, as I walked out the door were, “Honey.... go fish’n”. Well, here I sit, thankful for your instruction, but missing my Dad something terrible as I set up his rig for tomorrow’s German Brown trip. btw.... I love the American Flag in the background and thank you for your patriotism. Please note the US flag may be displayed vertically or horizontally. The union (stars) should be at the top to the observer's left. 😉👍🇺🇸🎣

    • Aw man that really hit me hard, Im sorry for your loss, my dad also was a nam vet who was exposed to agent orange and god knows what else while serving on the USS KITTYHAWK '66-70. He came home, was told he wouldn't live to see me turn two well I was lucky to have him for 37 years. He passed away 10 years ago. My dad also loved fishing, I now use his rods and his boat but there's a few rods I just cant use because they're still rigged up by him and I just cant cut the knots. It never gets better, I miss him everyday but I do smile sometimes knowing im doing what he loved. Thank you for sharing and keep on fishin! Best wishes to you and your family.

  • I wanted to say I appreciate this video and your method of presenting it. I just purchased my first fly rod tonight with a goal to learn this summer. I've been thinking about it for a couple years now. I spin fish all the time and typically chase trout in the brook and I've watched a ton of videos on fishing techniques and find they all speak way too fast and technical. You slow things down and make it easy to understand and relatable to those who are trying to learn and haven't been exposed to years of the slang and jargon with fishing. I truly appreciate this, please keep up the good work and keep the content flowing.

  • Thanks for posting this video.. I have referred to it a few times as I put all new line on an old Phlueger Medalist reel. We i nherited a few fly reels and other assorted flies and a couple of rods from my wife's grand parents.. both were avid anglers. Long story longer.. the line on the reels was very old.. for fun I actually took one fishing as it was.. the line would never straighten out.. I think 40 years might exceed the usable life of a fly line. You have a great channel!

    • Very valuable to. I'm a noob, just started learning to cast (it's quite relaxing). Though as you said, you can have this done in a store; what if you're out, not near one? It's a basic but valuable skill set to have no doubt. Don't depend so much on the convenience of tackle shops that you can't do most things on yer own if you need to. Thank you for the effort in putting this video together.

  • To Brian and the customer service at mad river, you guys are the absolute best!! I have made several purchases from your store, pretty much everything I needed and anything I need in the future will come from you. You've videos are great, I've learned so much from you and Kelly Galloup, I enjoy the fact that he says what is on his mind at the moment. But yes, thank you very much for everything, and maybe if you have any idea of how to get Redington to get rod tips in stock faster, maybe you could let them know. I'm sure I'll be ordering something soon, have a great day

  • Great video Brian. You mentioned if the loop at the end of fly line breaks where you attach the leader to use a nail knot to attach leader to fly line why not just tie another loop in the end of fly line to attach the leader. It would be easier an it'll be loop to loop again

  • Hello Brian. Thanks for the great videos. I followed the process to put 108 yds of 20lb backing on a 3/4 wt reel. But I ran out of room on the reel when I spooled on the fly line (maybe 3/4 of the line on). Maybe I did something wrong? My only thought is to remove some of the backing. Any other thoughts/suggestions? Thanks again!

  • Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for these How-To videos on setting up my first fly reel and rod. I’m 58 and learning about fly fishing for the first time in my life. My wife and I moved to Southwest Missouri and have access to Lake Tanycomo and other great places to trout fish. I actually love rainbow trout. So I’m hoping to learn how to do this so it’s enjoyable and I’m fishing ethically. What would you recommend for fishing on Lake Tanycomo?

  • I have been fishing since about 8 yrs old.So, hubby buys me a starter fly rod and some flies and after inspecting the purchase, and then watching this video, there's a few items i need. basically line and that tying tool for the nail knot. Is that nail knotting tool a 'common' item or a specialty, hard to find item?? I'm excited to try my hand at fly fishing. My son is an avid fly fisher and is giving casting lessons with his rig. Living in Idaho and loving the nature and fishing spots. Thanks for this vid ! Found it helpful.

  • Hi Brian, nice video. I just got my old 6 wt True Temper Custom Built One Thousand 8 ft fly rod out of my storage . I believe its probably between 35 to 40 years old. I used it for only a few years when i was much younger for stocked trout and bluegills and small bass and an occasional pickeral here in Delaware. I took off the old line that looked like it had melted into a big mess...lol. Anyway I cleaned it all up and was thinking about trying it out again for perch and maybe even small stripers casting some streamers. Im sure it was an inexpensive setup when my mom took me to her uncles outdoor store and bought it myself. Any advice on lines or anything else or do you think I should retire the old girl?
