What one seemingly random traffic stop can teach us about the connections amongst people.
Lieutenant Tim McMillan is a veteran law enforcement officer with the Garden City Police Department. After a fateful traffic stop on October 1, 2016, Lt. McMillan has become an activist for police community relations and civil rights. He maintains an active blog where he discusses contemporary civil rights issues and inspirational insights. Lt. McMillan has been featured on numerous media outlets, and appears in the 2017 documentary film “Walking While Black.” Lt. McMillan is also the founder and director of the nonprofit police research, training, reform, and accreditation program, The Four Trees Project Inc.

@ No, not all that different. I am a Medic, not a Cop, but I ride with a Law Enforcement MC and 90+% of those I encounter socially are caring humans who have ZERO desire to do physical harm to others. Their job is as hard as, in some ways harder than, my job was (I'm retired) and I've been a firefighter and Paramedic, removed dead people from homes, cars, Motorcycle wrecks, etc. . The "bad/bully cops" are a very small number of people and, of course, there are a few who are emotionally and physically unsuited for what 1st responders see and do. Those got through the program by pure bad luck and the ability to look good in a classroom. That happens in Fire, EMS, Nursing, Medical School, and every other profession there is. Get to know some cops and you'll find some nice people doing a job with demands you cannot understand until you become a 1st responder. Trust me, after 8 years of fire and 36 years of EMS/ER I still don't truly understand how they tolerate their job.

AS A POLICE OFFICER, I GET ASKED BY KIDS ALL THE TIME, "HEY MR. OFFICER WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST AND BADDEST WEAPON ON YOUR BELT"? I SAY IT IS MY MOUTH. MY TONGUE... WHAT I SAY AS A COP CAN CHANGE AN OUTCOME OF ANY SITUATION COMPLETELY ! I GOT INTO POLICE WORK TO CHANGE OUTCOMES FOR THE BETTER AND TRY TO GIVE 2ND CHANCES.

The problem with modern policing in the inner city is that the metrics of measuring police performance includes arrests/week & tickets/week and such and such. Maybe a better metric would be "peace/week". Or something along those lines. It would change the mentality of the police who could see themselves as a preserver of peace, rather than simply a law enforcer.
Something else that would be helpful would be truth and legitimacy. Truth is, the legit job of police is to apprehend criminals (bona-fide suspects). The BS about police "protecting" justs puts ppl in danger and replaces personal responsibility with non-legit governmental power. Most officers are decent people, but the shift away from liberty to a more litigious culture fosters a degradation of institutions including police departments. Few things are more disturbing than abuse of power by police, thankfully, it's still relatively rare, but we can either expect it to get worse or hope it gets better. It mostly depends on what we eexpect from them and what we expect from ourselves. If we will just man-up and return to older genuine values, then we would be able to worry less about our officers.

I once helped a Jacksonville, Florida,(Deputy) Policeman I kept hearing stop...Get Back, Outside my bedroom window after hearing it a 3rd time I knew he needed help. I sprinted out of my apartment to find my neighbor on the ground but 5 friends of his were moving closer and closer. The officer was alone. I approached the officer and presented my palms out and just said "Can I help". The officer accepted my help and just pointed at the 5 friends to keep them back. I put myself between them and officer and he was able to handcuff the driver. The officer had gave the wrong address for his backup. So I was his Backup that night. I want to do that again before I die.

I’m a 60 year old Englishman who remembers community policing in the UK. The policeman knew you, knew your parents maybe mine more than most because of my mother’s job. They were part policeman, part social worker, part family friend they could give you a clip round the ear, counsel you or take you home to your parents who would give you a clip round the ear. They didn’t do any of it to be on a power trip but because it was THEIR community and they cared about it. The biggest mistake in UK policing was the 'panda car' which took the police away from walking their beat.

It's called the debt and credit tree. We are glad to see the family tree chosen. We are grandfathered-in, feathered, light as: heart repair, name sake. Family love...Good man. Choosing the fatherly love to a son. I copy!. Not a jail cell, but a blood-cell...No one is paying in the first place. Whether working a job or not, we automatically, always learn and do. It's what we are. We have been trained, on a debit and credit tree. A conquering, and harming tree. It's time for the caring family tree, where all work, as it's perfectly normal all day anyway. That's what we are. Caring learning, yet the debit/credit tree exchanged truth...its beyond sad.

I'm glad the traffic stop changed the cop and made him a more humane person. Much respect for that. Too bad their are a million other cops who do not feel the same.

domestic violence laws need to be repealed.....the police should not be in ppls homes and relationships like that. and it was over half my calls when i did my time countless lives ruined over chickenshit and it didnt matter if she slapped herself he ws going to jail. and if their was real domestic violence it happened every week and she or he went back every single time no matter what! personal use of small amounts of drugs should not be illegal the millitary style police academy boot camp needs to be eliminated for a classroom and at the same time on the job training. the academy i went to did nothing but pump into my head up with im the police and i was better and a step up from civilians......i didnt learn much of anything untill i got to my fto time and thats where i learned how to be an officer.

It’s either nerves, which is impacting how he’s breathing or it’s the microphone or both-it’s not a weight issue.
Here are some things that you will never ever hear when a cop gives a talk. 1. The police union should disappear 2. Internal investigation is fair. 3. Prosecute all cops who arrests or charges are dropped and they are charged with false arrest. Make a law making it against the law for cops to lie to you. They can actually lie to you but you can not lie to them..this cop is trying to make you like cops but the problems he creates only get bigger and will eventually lead to anarchy.he will go out and lie to the public. He will stop people who have committed no crime and the abuse goes on and on.
There SHOULD be police. Police do things wrong sometimes, just like any other type of person. But without police things would be worse. I appreciate the police. I'm kind of scared of them. But if I respect them, I'll get what I deserve or don't deserve.
@the dude I was with you on all of those except one. It's not up to cops whether charges are dropped or not. That's up to the prosecutor and sometimes they drop them whether it was a good arrest or not if they don't think it's worth their time.
