Manners Maketh Social Anxiety | Get Real Ep. #45

Social etiquette is something that we’ve all had to navigate in our interactions with others one-to-one or people in mass. Sometimes it feels like it’s too easy to slip up and come off as rude without meaning to do so! Whether it’s something in the culture or differing personalities, what does it mean to us to “have manners”?

It's more like, they'll just say something along the lines of "you're just saying that so I'll stop bothering you", "you're just saying that to get rid of me", "lmao girls always say shit like that" or something like that of that variation and then proceed to keep on making moves on the girl until she proves it to them that she really does have a "boyfriend" or they may not stop at all even if she *did* prove it to them that she really does have a "boyfriend". Or some may just straight up tell the girl that they don't care if she has a boyfriend and keep on harassing the girl anyways.

    • Listen a guy flirted with me once and I was like “sorry I’m married” while clearly flashing my wedding rings and dude was like “how’s that going?” Like get away from me. To make it worse this happened while I was pumping gas, I was the only other person outside the gas station, it was dark outside in a rural area and my baby’s in the car.

When the guys were advising that the girl should be more cutthroat when rejecting someone, Im glad Ashley brought up that rejection itself can be very scary for many girls because of the power imbalance. • Whenever I see Korean & Japanese people talk about how "the West" is so different, they tend to mean the USA. This is weird to me, because here in Belgium (Europe, also West) we actually have several habits that are closer to e.g. Korea than to the USA. I appreciate how in your podcast, you actually name the countries, to be more specific.

  • North American culture: “Look me in the eye when I’m talking to you” as a sign of respect/acknowledgement/paying attention/listening, because “looking away when I’m talking to you” is a sign of disrespect/evasion/dismissal/disagreement. So a kid looks an adult in the eye when being scolded. Asian culture: “Look down” as a sign of respect/submission/obedience to someone older/above you, because “looking eye-to-eye” can be confrontational/disrespectful. So a kid looks down when being scolded by an adult.

If you're talking with someone who is hard of hearing especially if it's on the phone- talking lower/deeper can actually be easier for them to hear instead of talking louder. I work in customer service on the phones and someone told me that one day and every time I get an older customer who can't hear well and I talk deeper/lower they can hear me better- it's not perfect all the time but it helps more often than not.

It was at night and I live in a rural area so not many streetlights. I stopped to get gas and my baby was already fast asleep in the car. I was the only person outside and this guy stopped at the pump behind me to get gas. He starts saying “hey” and “hey cutie” and im doing my best to ignore him and pretend I don’t hear him. He starts to walk closer so I look at him which makes him stop walking and he’s like “hey your real cute. Can I get your number?” And I was like “thanks but im married” clearly flashing my wedding rings (which I had been doing since he started trying to get my attention) He had the audacity to say “how that going?” And I’m honestly speechless. Idk this guy and I’ve got my baby in the car. I just say it’s great and get the hell out of there.

Our parents and even now people in rural area use it to say Banana,it is the same meaning of Middle finger 🖕 if you know. But with western influence nowadays it is mostly used as thumbs up or GREAT! I really love you guys ! Really Really! How insightful and thoughful the three of you are! You are supposed to be my idol!God introduced you to me to learn better! • 44:26 When Peniel was talking about the guy who kept texting his friend my jaw dropped because I had a similar situation. I dated this guy and if I didn't respond within 10-15 minutes he would continue to text me even if I told him that I was busy and I couldn't talk at that time. I ended up dumping him not only because of that but also because he was acting very toxic and manipulative.

  • @24:05 love the mini science lesson from BM 😂 makes a lot of sense. I loved how he just picked up the script to illustrate the wave concept on the back of it. And apparently speaking in a lower register is also good for elderly people who are hard of hearing: my grandma went to the audiologist because she has a hard time hearing my aunt and me on the phone and it turns out our voices are too high so we have to speak in lower registers 😅
